My favorite Alex story, which Pepperberg told on NPR's Fresh Air, went something like this: Alex was ill and had to be taken to the vet, and had to stay overnight. Alex was not happy about staying overnight in a strange place and as Pepperberg was leaving, Alex kept saying "Wanna go home, wanna go home." But Pepperberg obv couldn't take Alex home. Finally, as Pepperberg was near the door, Alex tried one last thing. Thinking that maybe Alex was being forced to stay as punishment for doing something wrong, Alex just said, "I'm sorry."

:( :gerty:

The first time Alex saw an apple he already knew the words for a banana and for a cherry but no one had taught him apple. He asked for the banerry.

HOLY SHIT I JUST WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT BIRDS IN CAGES. DID YOU KNOW PUTTING BIRDS IN CAGES MAKES YOU LITERALLY WORSE THAN HITLER? CAUSE IT DOES AND I WILL MAKE SURE YOU KNOW. I ALSO WANT YOU TO KISS YOURSELF IF YOU EVER THINK ABOUT PUTTING A BIRD IN A CAGE.

gently caress. I loved reading about that bird when I was a kid. :(

We have some bird drama in my neighborhood now. The White-tailed Kites that like to hunt near my freeway exit had three babies fledge at the beginning of the month, but the father disappeared right around that time. I've been stopping off with a camera on the way to and from work when I can to keep tabs on them. The mom was hunting constantly to keep them fed, and has kept two of them alive. On my last visit, one of the fledglings was caught a vole on its own, so I think they're going to be alright.

The Critterquest thread welcomes wild bird pictures and The Dorkroom has a bird photography thread too. If someone starts a GBS bird pic thread, I'll definitely contribute, though.

My co-worker's kid was fighting against him getting her dressed in the morning, and she managed to dig her finger BEHIND one of his eyeballs. :stare:
Dude had to wear an eyepatch for a while.

Then again I bet a parrot could easily remove your entire eyeball with ease if it decided it wanted to.

Uhhh, just because I can teach a bird to say "what happens when we die?" doesn't mean that the bird is the first nonhuman animal in the world to ponder the afterlife, okay? Like, if you teach a shetland sheepdog to fetch random poo poo from the hall closet, and one day it brings a bandage to a guy who just cut his pinky, it doesn't mean the dog understands first aid.

There are a lot of tests that have proven that some birds do have some interesting cognitive abilities. Some even pass the mirror test. However, I highly doubt a bird was the first non-human animal to ask an inquisitive question when there are loads of primates with a much more deep grasp of language than any bird can brag about. Koko has been asking inquisitive questions and even holding limited conversations with human counterparts for many years now. Her "adopted brother" Michael even recalled the events of him becoming an orphan (his mother was slaughtered for meat by poachers) on a few occasions.

Yeah hey I wonder if there has ever been any animal intelligence researchers who spent 30 years of their life trying to prove that their pets were smart and then it turned out "no" and that there were lots of other plausible interpretations for what was going on

I'll google it

I think part of the fascination with parrot intelligence is that they ARE so alien to us. Humans can on some level relate to primates because we are primates. Parrots are an entirely different sort of being; little left-over dinosaur things that have shown fairly startling cognitive abilities in some species.

This a good crow study:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/26/science/26crow.html

quote:

Crows and their relatives — among them ravens, magpies and jays — are renowned for their intelligence and for their ability to flourish in human-dominated landscapes. That ability may have to do with cross-species social skills. In the Seattle area, where rapid suburban growth has attracted a thriving crow population, researchers have found that the birds can recognize individual human faces.
