I think part of the fascination with parrot intelligence is that they ARE so alien to us. Humans can on some level relate to primates because we are primates. Parrots are an entirely different sort of being; little left-over dinosaur things that have shown fairly startling cognitive abilities in some species.

Budgies are pretty cool. My first pet that was "mine" as a kid were two budgies named Larry Bird and Chiquita, who in turn begat two paralyzed children named Helicopter and Pegleg, the latter of whom lived for years and then passed away overnight in his food dish, eating
