gently caress. I loved reading about that bird when I was a kid. :(

We have some bird drama in my neighborhood now. The White-tailed Kites that like to hunt near my freeway exit had three babies fledge at the beginning of the month, but the father disappeared right around that time. I've been stopping off with a camera on the way to and from work when I can to keep tabs on them. The mom was hunting constantly to keep them fed, and has kept two of them alive. On my last visit, one of the fledglings was caught a vole on its own, so I think they're going to be alright.

A juvenile misses the vole with its talons and face-plants into it.

Great pics

GBS could use a bird pics thread
The Critterquest thread welcomes wild bird pictures and The Dorkroom has a bird photography thread too. If someone starts a GBS bird pic thread, I'll definitely contribute, though.

Potoos are the most muppety of birds. Frogmouths are next in line.

Then bitterns.

My fav hawk story is a time a saw one taking a nap on a tree branch. A crow flew down and bit him on the rear end, then flew away.

Crows are pretty hilarious assholes
They really enjoy being dicks to raptors. This one flew onto a branch right next to a Red-shouldered Hawk and called at it for almost a whole minute until the hawk got pissed and made a pass at the crow.

His bitterns look way too dignified. To fully appreciate that bird, you have to see it being the bizarre, stretchy muppet-heron that it is.

why does he hide his neck then make it so long, what is this
It lets them find and strike at prey hidden in the marsh plants without scaring it off by walking around. They also stretch their striped necks upward to blend into stands of reeds when they feel threatened.

Ooh, I love Green Herons. They are excellent tubes/extendbirbs. They are incredibly shy, though - we have them around, but I usually only catch glimpses of them before they hide in the willows.

Black-crowned Night Herons are neat, too. Their courtship is basically showing off how handsome of a poofed tube you can be, then rubbing beaks.
