Give people the ability to change avatars whenever, maybe switch the no-ads feature over to that and grandfather in the other people. I think a monthly fee just for membership would kill the forums dead. I'd pay $10 a year. Honestly though, people can theorize over how to charge, but unless they post what the actual costs are, everything is just going to be an idea.
