To be fair to the showrunners they never plugged the separation as a major thing, it was just something in a list of "this season on The Simpsons" that the media latched on to for some reason. Here they are doing damage control from back in June:

But no one seemed to notice and kept acting like it was some running change rather than an episode plot.

I still like The Simpsons, but yeah, not one of their best episodes.
