graph posted:he beat his wife with an iphone ahahaha holy poo poo I thought you were just kidding but nope: quote:David Pogue, 48, told officers that it was his night to be with the children and began arguing with his wife. He told police his wife had bitten his left arm and that she had been filming the altercation with her iPhone camera. Arciola said David Pogue followed Jennifer Pogue into a bedroom and allegedly jumped on top of her and hit her in the head with a phone. Both had evidence of the alleged assaults: David Pogue had a bite mark on his arm and Jennifer Pogue had marks on her head, Arciola said.

RGB LED strips have completely disgusting white light, if you get those use them only to supplement regular bulbs, not to replace them. Hue bulbs work great for natural white light with adjustable color temperature but can't really produce a pleasant green colour at all. If you want to go crazy, buy a bunch of addressable RGB LED strips and create your own light effects. Something like https://learn.adafruit.com/1500-neopixel-led-curtain-with-raspberry-pi-fadecandy

my new housemate has hue bulbs and uses them in his bedroom with one overhead and two in lamps to create mood lighting with a mix of different colours. it looks pretty cool having a mix of say orange, purple and pink from different angles with the cool shadows you get. that kind of thing could be done with LED strips though since the lack of warmth wouldn't be (at least as much of) an issue when not doing whites, and with the hues it's a bit of a downer not having green/cyan then I "hacked" them (ie. looked up the API and pressed the button on the hub thing when he wasn't there), and demonstrated this to him by making a thing on my phone with the pixelated lightning bolt symbol from WATCH_DOGS (we're both gamer dorks, yospos bithc) and pressing it to plunge his room into blackout. I tend not to prank him with that much now though because I borrowed one for my room (he has a fourth he'd been using in his bathroom) so we have MAD going on now but earlier tonight our internet dropped out for an hour or two and since I make API calls directly to the hub over the LAN whereas he just uses the official app with some bullshit he was helplessly unable to retaliate or even to fix his own lights having a hue hub with poo poo on the home LAN is probably a security fuckup but otoh it's just so goddamn convenient being able to turn my light off without getting out of bed

if I want to use homekit for my Z-wave stuff, should I use RaspPi + OpenHA or Homebridge?
|
# ? Oct 8, 2016 18:37 |
|
Both, I am using RasPi + OpenHAB + HomeBridge (with the openHAB plugin) and it works great. I can query and control my central heating, turn on and off a shitload of different things and have a bunch of scripts that trigger activities on my logitech harmony. OpenHAB 2 has homekit built in but lots of broken plugins and it's still missing most of the documentation. OpenHAB 1.8 has a pretty solid zwave plugin as long as you don't require encryption. If you require secure devices like door locks it's probably worth looking at other options, because the beta z-wave plugin that supports encryption has a tendency to jam all communications for up to a minute while it's butting heads with the secure device over some invalid nonce encryption token.
