I want to fling an asteroid at the capital of their largest empire and see what happens. I want to put a terraformer in orbit and start stealing all their air. I want to funnel suitcase nukes into the hands of their most vicious terrorists. I want to arrive and make broadcasts about how we're going to help this world and gift them technologies that will solve 80% of their ills and then ignore the intelligent simian species completely, don't even react to them, while we uplift and civilize lobsters. Or to engineer a loving gigantic lobster and unleash it upon them, and keep throwing more and more kaiju at them.

it's really bad to base opinions off of Steam reviews of DLC because it's really hard to find steam reviews of any kind of DLC that are generally positive because people want constant game development instead of release and forget games but they don't actually want to pay for that development.

From the 4x games I've played, Sword of the Stars 1 is the game that most closely models an interesting tactical combat game with a simplified empire side of things. It's very similar gameplay wise to Total War games in that the tactical combat is the focus, but it differs in that you can make meaningful choices on the strategic side that impact the combat.

I'm basically hoping for this game to be Sword of the Stars 1 but with planetary details instead of mere solar, deepened racial and ethnic constructs, good empire management and actual, factual politics.

You can even skip the combat that lasts for millions of turns due to deployment limitations and 10 minute combat.

I still want Rome 2. Only with less focus on Rome because at that game's start date Rome is just a regional power and the Diadochi are cooler and more interesting. Also the map should extend to India, seriously. EU: Rome's map was tiny and had almost nothing on it.

Kinda weird just how much people think post Alexander classical history is "and then Rome exploded all over the Mediterranean" and all the interesting Punic, Sucessor states, Parthian\pseudo Persian and Indian interactions are footnotes until they're mentioned in a famous battle where they get their faces shoved in by the Romans.

It's very :911: in a way.

Actually it's really hard and, I would imagine, really expensive to get hold of actual SS or Wehrmacht uniforms. In fact they tend to be simply modified NVA (that is army of the GDR) uniforms which were very similar to the Wehrmacht uniforms. I think even the replicas tend to be based off the look of the NVA uniforms because they are simply so much easier to get hold off and work off than the nazi uniforms, where you might have mostly photos nowadays, while the NVA uniforms (at least elements of them) are easily obtained in Germany.

Thinking about it that's pretty ironic in at least two ways. First you have a communist nation basing the look of their military forces on the nazis who they opposed in most every way and wanted to distance themselves from. Second you might have a bunch of nazi cosplayer geeks unknowingly running around in communist army uniforms with swastikas and iron crosses replacing the socialist imagery.

Why not dress like true and good NVA?

What? No, Hitler did plenty wrong. You'd have to be insane not to say that. For example, the decision to hold back the tanks at Dunkirk was a clear mistake, as was the decision to wheel south in September 1941. If Hitler had instead ordered the advance on Moscow, he would have won the war easily. All in all the military performance of the Wehrmacht could be improved upon. If all of them had fought as hard and as honorable as the SS...

By winning easily you mean having the German army ground to nothing at the gates of Moscow while encircled from the south yes.

it's kind awierd when you think about it.

a rebellion in space where you lose control of a planet for a single turn is super ignorable when you're talking from a gameplay perspective.

but in that planet the rebellion probably lasted 20 to 40 years or even more.
