And yeah, alt history stuff is still something we are interested in, although I'm not sure about alt history scenarios. They are cool if done well, but on the other hand it can be a lot of content and it's an area where mod teams can do as well or better.

As long as national focuses are moddable (which I think is a safe assumption?) it should be super easy for mod teams to knock out alt-hist scenarios.

Anyways how is Paradox handing the departure of QA lead Anna Jenelius? Paradox games have steadily improved in stability and I'm going out on a limb and assuming that changes to the QA process have been involved?

Not that it makes any difference to me (I already bought CS), but thinking about it, they do have a point: it makes CS kinda of a mandatory DLC, dont it?

I don't think so. You can easily play the whole game without developing any provinces. It takes some strategies away (like playing a free city and going development-heavy) but that's not unique: e.g. without art of war you can't make client states. That changes your ability to conquer your same continent past tech 23 but it doesn't break the game. You can easily play the whole game without making client states.

Yeah, but building slots depends on development, so without the ability to raise the latter, the former (buildings) becomes somewhat crippled. And I guess the complain is that the changes cripples a native feature and forces people to buy a DLC to be able to properly use it.

That's true, but! A building slot costs at least 500 monarch points to gain the 10 development you need. This is a very marginal case unless you're going for a very specific strategy. Since buildings only cost cash now, it's likely that you can build more buildings total now than you could before, even if you can't develop provinces. Developing one province enough to gain a single building costs as much as 50 buildings used to cost.

e: 50, not 5, derp

e2: well, if you only need to bump it one point, then it would be 5 buildings.

HoI IV should prioritize interestingness over strict historicity. In retrospect, Germany and Japan had clearly lost their respective wars by the end of 1942. That fact would make a pretty boring game if it were adhered to. So would Mexico/Ireland not being able to join the Axis or Italy not being able to join the Allies or all kinds of other permutations.

Tbf personally I don't think AI cheating is a bad thing at all as long as it isn't super obvious, but actually balancing your game around strategies that happen after launch shouldn't be some unattainable thing.

Firaxis' attitude towards a game's post-release life simply hasn't changed since civ 4, whereas the rest of the industry (especially EU4) has moved on a lot.

Unless the problem can essentially be represented as a matrix, it's not presently machine-learnable. This is why images are so popular - they're already matrices, or if you want to get fancy, you can perform feature detection on them and get a feature detection matrix. Something as squishy as the course of an EU4 game would take herculean efforts just to develop a representational model.

A lot of people say "do machine learning" when what they mean is "do some kind of fancy AI stuff". I blame press releases about self-driving cars and the like.

You would be appalled by the hacks that go into most actual machine learning applications.

For example, a car staying in a lane. Early lane-staying system basically took a picture of the road and then tried to machine-learn whether or not the picture seemed to have two lines to either side. Pictures that deviated from that prompted a drift right / left response to try to make the picture correct to something that fit the heuristic better. The car didn't "understand" that it was "between" two "lanes" - it could have been easily fooled by washed out lanes, lane printing errors, someone laying down dummy lanes, particular patterns of road damage, etc, because it was really just a really convoluted image correction algorithm stuck behind a steering wheel that could slowly "learn" that, given an image of the road, it could generally make the image get closer to its desired state by toggling one of its two outputs.

This is basically the Chinese Room dilemma. No AI actually knows that it is "playing" a "game". It is optimizing a mathematical function whose outputs hopefully line up with effective gameplay. It's stupid hard for anything beyond the most trivial AI applications (like pathfinding).

The national focus thing is honestly my most anticipated part of HOI4. HOI was always short on the narrative department after it left the tightly scripted event chains of HOI2/DH/other spinoffs. I think that making HOI into a political sandbox via national focus trees is a really good step towards reintroducing a narrative but not tying it strictly to the same WW2 every time around.

How are you balancing them, though? What are the odds that everyone joins Axis and Hitler leads a coalition of pan-european snuggleship?
