I can't think of a show that oscillates more between being really good and really bad. Often several times in a single episode.

The start of every season is great, then it spirals down the toilet of :effort: into the sewer of mediocrity.

remove Will Forte and add Jason Sudekis/Will Ferrell/anyone else and it would be funnier, he is just not funny in any way in this show.....actually the parts when he was alone at the beginning were okay but just acting like a dumb 7 year old is not funny especially once he starts rambling on and runs everything into the loving ground.

He was funny for about 2 appearances in 30 Rock too.

The credits for this half-season are "with" January Jones and Mary Steenburgen, so maybe they're planning to hop off this poopwagon soon.

I know I said it a few pages back, but I'll ask again; does Will Forte actually think he's funny? Or does he know he sucks and keep banging on for the paychecks?

Every once in a while he gets something good in. He has the ability to be really funny but is more likely to not be funny at all.

Forte is funny, he(or the writers) are just committed to making the character as purposefully unfunny as possible. But it isn't endearing, it's not so-lame-it's-funny, he just sucks the life out of any scene he's in, even if the show accidentally sets up a funny premise Forte will come along and ruin it. So from a writing perspective it is on purpose(or else they would write in some positive qualities), but from an in-universe perspective he's supposed to be this lovable goofball but he's done absolutely nothing to earn that status on or off screen.

The only aspect of this show that still tickles me is when they reference or play something that obviously came out after the show began and they just don't care. Poplocking to Panda by Future in this one for example.

The show takes place a few years in the future, though, so that checks out until... I think three years from now?

We know they had President Pence when poo poo hit the fan so that can push the date back a decent amount if they really wanted to.

They went through a big chunk of the Trump cabinet, so it's still in our future.

They went through the whole cabinet but it could be as late as year 4 of term 2. (or in an even darker timeline where Pence gets elected post-Trump and keeps a lot of the same cabinet)

And not only that, they did it in a way that trusted the audience to catch up rather than tossing a chyron up.

I'll be perfectly honest, I was convinced it was a dream Tandy was having up until the wedding really got going.

I feel like they are just trolling us now. They throw out those lovely episodes. Then as soon as I think "I'm done with this, this is the last chance," they put out a good episode with actual comedy in it.

You know, it's funny to see people trashing the show now - I had the damndest time not giving up on the show in frustration during the first season, and now I feel like it's finally hit a groove, only to find out I'm the only one who thinks that, seemingly.

I feel like once they finally stopped trying to have their cake and eat it too with the characterization of Tandy, and settled on him meaning well but being terrible at it, it made Forte's humor (which I enjoy in general) go down easier.

No I'm right there with you. I wasn't even hate watching it at the end of S1 just bored watching it. I was about to drop it when the Stealth Bomber opening of S2 brought me fully on board with the show and I've enjoyed it all ever since. Even when it feels really Avant-garde. Last night was superb and if nothing else a great way of explaining the aging up of the adolescent actor. (I'm looking at you Walt.)

So the kid will still go by Jasper? Does he remember his real name?

I guess if Tandy's still Tandy, then the answer to both questions is yes.

That was... not horrible. The baby shooter was cute.

I'm kinda wondering if they're planning on winding it up at the end of this season (I still think it will all be Tandy dreaming). Giving birth with no training or technology tends to have bad outcomes.

And what the hell kind of wacky building are they living in, with go-karts, a giant foam pit, and man-size Connect Four? It's like a daycare on super-steroids.

They mentioned it when they first got there. It's a tech start up that was never finished before things went bad.

Yeah, when Phil got sick, they had the ultrasound machine etc he had gotten as a surprise for Erica; the surgical tools/practice dummy were a kind of hurry scurry slap dash thing in a day or two. With the baby thing, not only have they not have had way more time to prep, but barring complications (a few eps back, I think Todd said every woman in his family needed a C-section) but childbirth is biologically a much more 'natural' procedure than your appendix blowing up, barring complications of course.

Am I the only one a little intrigued by the smooch between Erica and Gail at the start of the episode? I wasn't sure to read it as just a deep friendship that they've been through a lot together and that Gail's in charge of Erica's baby, or if it was implying something more

I thought it implied that they hooked up, which would be another development, along with Jasper speaking and Melissa recovering, that happened in the time jump.

If I remember correctly, I think there was something said to the effect that the two found comfort in each other's arms, so to speak, back before they found Tandy, when it was just the two of them. So yeah, it would indeed be a development now, but not really a new development.
