Yep, you got it, don't disconnect the speaker on an amplifier with a tube output section. Get or build a power soak out of resistors, plug this in instead of the speaker, live happily ever after.
(alternatively, consider a muff for the front of the cabinet)

I have very nearly furnished an entire project studio from craigslist.
guitar, bass, bass amp, guitar amp, saxophones, cornet, trumpet, cello, drum set, microphones, limiters, mic stands, curtains, monitors, LCD monitors, power amp, headphone amp, etc.
It took almost 12 years, but I have only got about ~%20 if it's value invested in it.
Smug from the good deals helps to compensate for the anxiety over lack of talent.
