It still amazes me the budget deal even got a vote, let alone passed with Dem support (and a nice tip of the hat to Colorado and Washington). I kind of expected to see more news coverage, but I guess the lack of impending and very real crisis means it's boring. It should be a big deal that something actually passed in the House and wasn't loony bin trash to be thrown away by the Senate. I mean, clearly it shouldn't be news in a world with a functioning congress, but welp.

Paul D. Ryan is an actual piece of poo poo, but I'm hoping he focuses his weasely gaze on the HFC, slowly chewing the soles from their shoes while Dems and moderate/literate Republicans get some poo poo through. Maybe Pelosi will seduce him while he cries on her office floor after work, and guide him to his doom.

Or he'll be the second coming of Boehner and nothing will change until he is, as well, forced to pull out in shame.

The New York Times' headline story today is an investigation into those pesky arbitration clauses.

Among the (unsurprising) facts uncovered are that corporations' claims that arbitration would allow individuals to resolve their grievances easily was a lie: 80% of class-action suits that companies try to push into arbitration end up losing class-action status, and only 505 consumers nationwide have moved forward to arbitrate cases involving under $2,500 in losses between 2010 and 2014 given the high costs of arbitration (one man mentioned in the article has spent $35,000 in arbitration over a $125 late fee on his credit card, a category of arbitration in which two-thirds of consumers fail to win any monetary awards).

As a result, corporations have been largely getting away with fleecing consumers scott-free, as planned.

But it's not just consumers: the Times has also found that the biggest growth sector for applying arbitration clauses is in labor disputes, allowing them to push wage disputes and discrimination claims into arbitration as well.

I feel like I'm getting unfairly screwed here. All we get is the hosed up, lovely parts of Shadowrun with corporations becoming their own government and writing more profitable laws that countries have to follow. I want a dragon for president dammit, not binding arbitration that can be boiled down to "gently caress you, got mine....and now yours".

If Webb were to run as a 3rd party he wouldn't do it to win, he'd do it to spite-gently caress the Democrats like Trump would do if the GOP screws him over. There's no way Jim Webb is actually dumb enough to think he'd win as a 3rd party candidate.

This is really a very big deal; the systematic destruction of our judicial system right here. But, it's such a wonky issue that it's almost impossible to get people worked up over it. Corporations, especially insurance companies, have been hacking away at our open court system for decades. People don't concern themselves with it until it directly affects them or a close family member and then it's too late. Add in a compliant congress, at both state and federal level, and you get more and more legislation that destroys the right to civil trials. Our form of democracy, representative government, can not survive without a vibrant and active judiciary. Even libertarian poo poo-head theory depends on an active judiciary.

(I bolded my own sentence because that was really the most important point.)

Those voters already started voting Republican a while ago.

And the few remaining Dixiecrat holdovers would have already been attracted to Trump for the duration of this election cycle, rendering Webb's fiscally-populist/socially-conservative ideology redundant.

Unlike Trump, Webb lacks charisma, fame or money.
