So I saw a trailer for the Michael Bay Benghazi movie with the government telling troops not to save our people and a character literally going "we requested an air strike but it never came" several people in the theater started talking about how horrible it was that Hillary let that happen. If a Michael Bay movie spreads enough misinformation to get a Republican elected I'm just going to walk into the ocean and hope I'm reincarnated in a different country. Do we have a thread talking about this abomination.

I'm a librarian, and in literary thinking today this is quite simply why cyberpunk as a science fiction genre has died out except for deliberately retro stuff: cyberpunk came true. Just about everything people associated with cyberpunk's vision of the future, people now associate with real life.

The movie looks fun though in the sense of how bad it will be. It has barely anything to do with the actual victims of the Benghazi attack, the actors playing those people have like 20th billing at best and the film instead focuses on fictional PMCs that uh failed to save them.

Anyway here's Vilerat:

It's from Beijing but it's not like "well you'll never see the sunset, have a virtual one" it was a conveniently timed picture of the screen having an advertisement for tourism in Shandong + a usual day of lovely pollution

From what I remember, the issue was more marketing -- that when they fid marketing surveys, they found that Kids These Days didn't understand the concept of "cyberpunk" as a genre. Like, the term meant nothing to them and if you just described the elements (evil corporations control everything, cybernetics, etc) they didn't realize you were talking science fiction.

This is really a very big deal; the systematic destruction of our judicial system right here. But, it's such a wonky issue that it's almost impossible to get people worked up over it. Corporations, especially insurance companies, have been hacking away at our open court system for decades. People don't concern themselves with it until it directly affects them or a close family member and then it's too late. Add in a compliant congress, at both state and federal level, and you get more and more legislation that destroys the right to civil trials. Our form of democracy, representative government, can not survive without a vibrant and active judiciary. Even libertarian poo poo-head theory depends on an active judiciary.

(I bolded my own sentence because that was really the most important point.)
It's also not helping that SCOTUS rulings over the last 10-15 years have made it harder and harder to get a group certified for class-action status. Like when all female Wal-Mart employees tried to sue on the basis of gender discrimination in wages.

I hate this line so goddamn much. The only thing airstrikes would have done is murder the Libyans who were trying to help the Ambassador and the others to safety, as well as killing other civilians.

:ughh:loving Christ, seriously? Are they even gonna bother to call the group Ansar al Sharia?

Here's the actual dude he (might) be portraying:

quote:

Ahmed Abu Khattala (born c. 1971) is an incarcerated Muslim Libyan, who commanded a small militia during the 2011 uprising against Qaddafi. He is suspected of participating in the 2012 Benghazi attack on the American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, in which Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
--
Witnesses of the September 11, 2012 attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi say they saw him leading the attack. On 6 August 2013, U.S. officials confirmed that Abu Khattala had been charged with playing a significant role in the attack. According to NBC, the charges were filed under seal in Washington, DC in late July 2013.
--
Capture:
On the weekend of June 14 to June 15, 2014, U.S. Delta Force special operations personnel captured him in a covert mission in Libya. Khattala is one of the suspected leaders of the 2012 Benghazi attack. He has been brought to Washington D.C. aboard the amphibious transport dock USS New York and is expected to face trial in a U.S. criminal court.
Please note the "captured by Delta Force special operations" part.

wow, gently caress bay, he already turned pearl harbor into a lovely jingoistic circle jerk with unlikable fuckhead characters, now he is taking the terrorist attack on Benghazi and turning it into a circle jerk for loving mercenaries. the fact that the victims barely even in it speaks loving volumes about his priorities.

you could theoriticaly make a good thriller/ drama piece on Benghazi. it would be a sad and tragic movie about 4 good men who died because of a terrorist attack and the aftermath. one of the scenes could be the people helping ambassador Stevens out of the burning car and trying to resuscitate him. or maybe a scene of when the people of Benghazi hosed up the one hideout of the militia that did the raid. maybe they could cover the political circlejerk that the conservatives brewed up and how they used the families of the victims for lovely political points. but NOPE.

also that dude is built like a brick shithouse. I kinda hope he turns this movie down because he deserves better.

Michael Bay's Benghazi film will probably be a huge hit. I dunno why people think it wouldn't be. Consider Triumph of the will American Sniper and how much money it made. Michael Bay's films make money even Pain and Gain although not a blockbuster made a shitload of money.

I was going by January releases are infamously terrible at the box office, though an exception does appear to be lovely rear end military kills Muslims films. Of the top 20 January wide releases, 1/5th fit this criteria (American Sniper, Lone Survivor, Black Hawk Down, Zero Dark Thirty). However, all 4 of those were awards bait films that had limited releases in December the previous year, before their January wide release to be eligible for the Oscars and build up hype. Benghazi The Movie does not have that.

A) coming out literally 10 months before the election, B) the people stupid enough to think it and American Sniper were documentaries already agreed with those movies. They weren't poo poo-talking Lewis. They started chanting in solidarity for the most recent unjust Black Kid Murder. Hillary handled the situation hilariously poorly. If anything it was a good example of how things would have looked if Bernie tried to shout down his BLM interrupters.

If anything, its really shameful that Hillary just took her support for granted and didnt have a plan for this scenario except "shout over BLM".

Well Deray Mackerson had a really productive sit down with HRC and staff, and posted a good trip report. I'm having trouble finding video (phone, putting kid to bed) but there was supposedly footage of Don Lemon interviewing some dude with a man bun who's just so disappointed with John Lewis, which is physically painful to read.
