this is a question unrelated to US politics October, but what exactly was the cause of the insanely high turnout in presidential elections in the 1800s? i suspect voter fraud and shady poo poo had a lot to do with it, is that accurate?

Growth of media able to influence elections combined with a number of controversial political issues and a small, elite electorate.

Slavery and Reconstruction pretty much dominated that century and those are important issues that people felt very strongly about and still do.

Before we sail into November, I must share with you all this disturbing political dream I had last night. I was in a republican retreat hosted by Ben Carson and his family. Things were going quite well, until Paul Ryan bought me this huge hamburger. I had already eaten a large breakfast and wasn't hungry, but I did accept it. Paul was so mad that I didn't eat the burger right away, he farted in my face and went absolutely daffy. Nobody could stop his loony tunes rampage. Over the course of several days, he kept buying me food, but he either farted or spit on it before leaving his offerings on my night stand. What could it mean?

When most people can't legally register/vote, it pushes the turnout rate up.

Free booze. Seriously. Before the introduction of the Australian ballot, the way you voted in the US was to hand a piece of paper with the names and offices you were voting for to the election judge. To ensure that people voted for their preferred candidates, the political parties would print out stacks of these "party tickets" and hand them out to voters at the polling place. To ensure that people picked the right ticket, they would hold a bit party at the polling place and let the hard cider flow. This practice is obviously something we need to bring back to Make America Great Again.

I was surprised at how nasty the NYTimes got with Christie on the 29th. Maybe I shouldn't be, it's local politics for them after all. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/30/opinion/governor-chris-christie-time-to-go-home.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Christie's also just been a gigantic freaking prick to New York for a while now. Using control over New Jersey's transit links to New York for political gain is kind of his MO, and as a result, NYC is only just starting to pick up the pieces of the Hudson Tunnel project, five years after Christie cancelled it for no reason other than his own political gain. In the meantime, if one of those tunnels goes, the entire east coast train network is screwed. If you want to see the NYT mad at Christie, just read this and you'll see where the nastiness comes from.

My granddad told me about a group of Swedish lumberjacks who worked in the woods around northern Wisconsin back in the 30's. Not one of them was a citizen, but they all got to vote because the shortest one was over six feet tall and everyone was afraid to tell them that they couldn't.

Denmark‘s prime minister is mad at Bernie Sanders for saying Denmark has socialism! It's a market economy therefore not socialism, which requires a planned economy.

The New York Times' headline story today is an investigation into those pesky arbitration clauses. Among the (unsurprising) facts uncovered are that corporations' claims that arbitration would allow individuals to resolve their grievances easily was a lie: 80% of class-action suits that companies try to push into arbitration end up losing class-action status, and only 505 consumers nationwide have moved forward to arbitrate cases involving under $2,500 in losses between 2010 and 2014 given the high costs of arbitration (one man mentioned in the article has spent $35,000 in arbitration over a $125 late fee on his credit card, a category of arbitration in which two-thirds of consumers fail to win any monetary awards). As a result, corporations have been largely getting away with fleecing consumers scott-free, as planned. But it's not just consumers: the Times has also found that the biggest growth sector for applying arbitration clauses is in labor disputes, allowing them to push wage disputes and discrimination claims into arbitration as well. ComradeCosmobot posted:The New York Times' headline story today is an investigation into those pesky arbitration clauses. It's such a transparent scam. When my old employer tried to push it I found the best way to deflate the pitch was to ask why, if it's so great, it wasn't opt-in instead of a condition of employment and why wasn't I allowed to request and arbitrator that I paid for? Thankfully they had an opt-out procedure, but at most places it's either sign it or resignation
