I'm still processing the hospital bombing but every time I can formulate a thought that seems to strike close to my feelings on the matter, a new bit of news comes out that makes me even more depressed an angry.

Hollismason posted:So again the only way to really get your student loans forgiven is death or total financial collapse. Tell me more about student loan debt in the world of the apocalypse? How would that work and why would it work? I'm sure the student loan companies will weather a financial apocalypse just fine and not become instantly insolvent due to corrupt managing and almost none of their actual assets being tied up in things that don't actually exist even in a loose accounting sense. Alternate answer: You lose your job and never find work again so you get deferrals until you die

Leon Trotsky 2012 posted:Because Hillary felt that the press aided and abetted witch hunts against her and Bill Clinton in the early 90's, both during his primary run and presidency, and as a result has generally been very dismissive of the press in general. She also attacks the press's ethics and credentials. The media in general hates being accused of bias or being unprofessional. She gives very little access to her campaign staff and advisors; compare her to John McCain who had the press ride with him in his bus, sat in the press section of the plane to chat off the record, and always provided donuts and meals to reporters for free. "I hope the press chokes on its own bile, and it replaced with a less terrible institution" is a bumper sticker I'd buy

I'd just like to interject to remind everybody that the mentally ill in America are ENORMOUSLY more likely to be the victim of violence than the cause of it, and the scapegoating of them doesn't make sense when it comes to guns. "Oh well they're just crazy" is a terrible thing to say. If you are gunned down, odds are it was somebody in their right mind who had motivations that aren't so easy to pigeonhole I don't want any legislation meant to help the mentally ill to include a single word about guns because I'd like to see it pass before 2030 We aren't up against guns here as much as we're up against the fact that property supersedes human life in our culture. Okay back to skipping page after page until I see political news

public sector workers don't make nearly as much as their private sector (contractor) counterparts. like not even close. an ex of mine's uncle was a GS15, naval academy grad, worked at one of the alphabet natsec agencies in DC. he 'retired' and immediately went to work for a contractor in NoVA making like $500,000.
In some fields, government jobs not only pay better but offer way better benefits and hours. You're less likely to get a 6 figure government job, but more likely to get a $15-25 an hour one with benefits that FAR outstrip what you'll get in the private sector. Government jobs are sought after because of the high floor more than anything else. From what I understand, unless you know Assembly or dirt on someone in power, the 6 figure jobs are pretty much nonexistent

Government jobs are sought after because of the high floor more than anything else. From what I understand, unless you know Assembly or dirt on someone in power, the 6 figure jobs are pretty much nonexistent the $15-25 an hour jobs all require a college degree, require trolling USAJOBS.gov for months (itself a form of hell), and generally pay a fair wage for extremely competitive jobs. and to top it off, unless you're ex-military you have a slim-to-none chance at even getting an interview nowadays. it is wholesale myth that public sector workers in the DC are overpaid w/r/t private sector jobs. there's just as many fields where the government "overpays" as there are where the government "underpays," IT/comp sci, and security/defense related to name a few.
My experience is as a licensed pharm tech from before I went into IT, and for techs there is a very real demand at places like the VA and the callcenters, and a college degree is absolutely not required to be a tech. You're probably right in regards to other industries though, I imagine if I tried to get a cushy government spot (unless working for a state school counts?) I'd have a lot more trouble going for an IT position. Sad thing is that gov jobs used to be considered the boring, secure but lower paying counterpart to private sector jobs across the board. Now they're a hot commodity because private sector is so dismal if you don't have specific skills that can't be farmed out (yet)

I've seen two things becoming more evident in my facebook feed over the past few weeks: 1) Cruz may have the southern evangelicals locked up, but all the rest love Carson (edit - or at least midwestern ones do. It turns out that everybody is content to just make up quotes and attribute them to him instead of using poo poo he's actually said because lol) 2) Let's not forget about the closet/not-so-closet racists out there who are absolutely feeling emboldened that Obama is leaving, and helping them along on that viewpoint is the RWM machine portraying him as an unpopular candidate who only made things worse despite taking us out of the Bush Years and being about 100x more popular right now than Bush was at year 7. I'm pretty sure they're accounted for in polling as "just going to pull the lever for straight ticket R no matter what" but still

It's important to stress the "barking from 5-10 feet away" thing. This is a combat trained dog, and if this dog (or any dog, really) had intended to harm it would've done what happened to the poster who posted earlier about a dog attacking them while on a bike. No warning, just an attack from the side aimed at taking you down. A dog's barking is literally a warning shot.

After conducting a traffic stop at which Indiana State Police Trooper Brian Hamilton presented Ms. Bogan with a warning ticket, Trooper Hamilton prolonged the stop by asking Ms. Bogan, among other things, if she had accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and then presented her with a pamphlet from the First Baptist Church in Cambridge that informed the reader that he or she is a sinner; listed God’s Plan of Salvation, noting that the person must realize that “the Lord Jesus Christ paid the penalty for your sins; and, advertised a radio broadcast entitled “Policing for Jesus Ministries.” The pamphlet can be viewed here
