Didn't this guy say he was "not religious, but spiritual" or something? It doesn't sound like he specifically was an atheist, though that doesn't preclude anti-theist views obviously.

Yeah he probably should have just shot up a mega church if he was motivated by anti-Christian beliefs. I assumed that the shooter was driven by frustration with his social inadequacy or lack of validation as a sexual being. It's generally either that or brain tumors with these people.

Speaking as an atheist and former rage-virgin, he probably thought loving with religious fools would be a bonus to the whole experience. Hopefully he found the results of his actions to be categorically and extremely unsatisfying.

While I don't find it strange or surprising that spiritual atheists exist, it is a little funny seeing as the exact same logic generally used to claim that a God doesn't exist can be used for literally anything supernatural. I imagine that such atheists are likely motivated by personal reasons more than anything else.

He did write he would be "welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil," so perhaps he was an agnostic with leanings towards spiritual satanism.

You seem to have a firm grasp on the opinions of a group of people that includes gnostic and agnostic atheists, the Brights, naturalists, sceptics, Buddhists, Raelians, Wiccans, Christian atheists, satanists, scientologists, people who believe in “something more” and atheists who believe in astrology, Big Foot and ghosts and innumerable other groups.

Theists have conveniently segregated themselves into neat groups so it's easy to narrow it down and talk about specific beliefs while atheists haven't had the courtesy to do so. It's very inconvenient but it still doesn't make it meaningful to talk about atheists as a whole. Are Dawkins/Hitchens/Harris representative? I don't see why I should care any more about them than a theist needs to care about what Pat Robertson or evangelical preachers say or how they say it, just because they happen to share theism as a property or they are popular within some communities of theists.

"Atheist" is a dead word that has been killed by people abusing it to mean what they want it to mean so often and with such disparate intent that it is functionally useless and should be ignored in all but the most casual use.

"Atheist" is chilling in dead word hell with "communist", "socialist", and "freedom".

I didn't ask for you to pontificate about the vast diversity of dorkness. I asked you why he is so popular amongst them. You should care about them because their brand of politics is representative of atheist belief whether or not you have memorized a "types of atheists" wikipedia list that your average tumblr poster would find a tad special snowflakey.
