Carcassonne is a fun and interesting game. A game you shouldn't play but I would like you to is Twilight Imperium which is somehow in the workshop. Alternatively the DC Comics Deckbuilding game is also quite fun, and doesn't last four hours.

I've had a friend rave about the Marvel deckbuilding game ("Legendary" I think?) so I'm surprised to find out these are two unrelated games! There have been times in the past where Marvel and DC both go to the same place for a similar game, like back when VS was a thing... Either way, I've added both your requests to the geeklist... and hopefully we'll get to some of these some time. :P

Legendary is a pretty fun game when everyone understands how to play it. Once you get a flow going it can all go by really quick. The best way to play it is to do everything completely randomly. From the mission, to the villain, to the enemies, to the heroes in play. It can make the game extremely hard but a lot more interesting. Such as, having some villains like The Blob who can only be defeated by an x-man character, but not having any x-men in your game. It forces you to try to move him so that he doesn't escape. But that said, the randomness can make the game extremely easy. But all the same, I think it's better than picking and choosing the best heroes and such.

I saw some Legendary playthroughs, and was really disappointed at how all cards depicting the same hero use the exact same drawing for it. It feels really lazy to me. Of course that doesn't affect gameplay at all. As to how I'd set it up, since it's a beginner's game I'd let players choose Heroes they like (hopefully ignoring their abilities if they know them). Then the rest can be picked randomly.

It definitely doesn't give much to look at when all of the art is the same. Though, I don't expect them to do five plus drawings for each character. Some variety would be nice. Especially since different colour cards for each character have something different to them. Whenever we play with someone new, or if there is a group, we have everyone just pick their favourite character. It's only when you've played a lot of the game that doing it at random really changes the aspect. Personally, I always like having Nightcrawler in because his ability is really useful in a pinch, but always having him makes the game boring.

Hey again everyone! Back after a bit of an impromptu hiatus. Hopefully the player-roster I threw together will help satiate y'all a bit. So! Colt Express! Or rather PLAYED INCORRECTLY COLT EXPRESS BECAUSE SOMEHOW, DESPITE MOST OF US READING THE RULEBOOK, WE MISSED A CRITICAL PART OF THE GAME. We're all idiots, I first found out about this like now, a month after recording basically. For those of you who aren't sure what I'm talking about. We played each round as a set amount of turns, this was wholly incorrect. ( meaning we placed out 1-2 cards at a time. ) We were supposed to plan for all the 'turns' of a round at the start of the round, meaning 2-5 cards. ( Meaning we should only have laid down cards 1 time per round, not 2-4 like we did. ) (This wholly and entirely answers why the games ended up at 1.5 hours, instead of 30-40 min. ) I believe this is a record for the largest rule fuckup thus far. Speaking of actually knowing how to play... how did you guys play Old Maid as a kid? I had a set illustrated specifically for it most of the time, but would use one of the jokers otherwise. Apparently some people remove the queen of clubs, and others remove all queens but the queen of spades, and use the queen of spades? And one of my friends insists you're supposed to use the four of hearts.

So! I had someone rather rudely and complex unexpectedly drop out of the Pokemon TCG tournament, and I'd really rather not have to redo the whole bracket as 2 games have already been played. Is there anyone out there, anyone at all, who has even a passing interest in Pokemon TCG and would be interested in joining us for this? It would really mean a lot to me, to keep things running smoothly.

Part 3: Carcass-OWNED In which the game winds to an end, chicken gets licked, and farmer scoring gets confusing. Also, during final scoring: Yeah, there was one or two times where I misplaced a scoring meeple due to rushing through math, but I've double checked it in post and it doesn't affect the final rankings of any player. So don't worry about it.

I went to my local game shop to see if they had Colt Express, and sadly they did not. There' one other place in town that might so I'll be heading there sometime soon. First time I've seen something in here that I really want to go and get. As per Carcassonne, it didn't even occur to me at any point watching that the rive connected absolutely everything. Considering the farms are meant to be an end game investment, you'd think they would have considered that greatly. Seeing that oversight, it feels like the river expansion was literally nothing more than to get people to spend more money on it. Over all it didn't really seem like it added a whole lot. That said, maybe having more than just one expansion in play can really change the game.
|
# ? Feb 20, 2016 16:39 |
|
Yeah, The River definitely feels like, a "for fun" aesthetic expansion, without any gameplay implications; that's probably why it was included with the US releases of the base game. Next time we play Carc, I'm going to add a different Spring tile with a road, that is in a mini expansion (that came out in the US only, curiously) that I actually own IRL! Plus, at least one other expansion... Carc has a ton of expansions, so I'm really not sure how fast to move through it. I feel like adding more than 1 major expansion at a time is moving too fast, but.

I suppose it really depends on how many times you want to return to the game. If you all don't feel like running a game per expansion, maybe when you want it to be the final round just do it with each and every one. I can only imagine that being the biggest gong show. So they only did that in the US? I suppose that's why my copy doesn't have it. If nothing else, aesthetically it looks really nice. I always enjoy games like this where you end up building a little world.

The official Pokemon Base Set tournament bracket [image]! I decided making an image to appear in videos would look better and be more useful, than trying to use the Challonge bracket--so the Challonge bracket will now be utilized by players to see who their opponents are, even if videos aren't posted. So if you bookmarked it for whatever reason, be aware it will now contain spoilers~. Expect the first match on Friday!

6 minutes of Pokémon excitement not enough for you today? Well, good news! The tournament has finally begun! So... Ignore everything I said about the seeding in this video; while that was the original intent, some late additions and some changes caused me to slightly re-work it. It's still basically right, with a few oddities; and a few original placements might not have been spot on. Still, it should be an interesting event! Also, yes. I pronounced Pokémon wrong at the end as a joke. Just, to be clear. ----- I also decided I should formally type this up; most everything here has just been spoken/assumed to all players, but it's nice to have it official: Official Tournament Rules 1. Follow rules of the trading card game as they were at the time, unless otherwise noted here. A version of the rulebook of the era can be found here. 2. Double Elimination tournament. When a competitor loses a match, they will be sent to the loser's bracket. Losing a 2nd time and they will be out of the tournament. 3. Each match is played best 2 out of 3. If you lose a match, you are allowed to switch your deck between rounds of the match. Winner must stay with the deck they won with. 4. Players are allowed to build new decks between matches, but not between rounds. That said, you may build as many decks as you want. 5. Cards are limited only to those found in the Base Set release. 6. Mulligan rule: You may only mulligan if you have no Basic Pokemon in your hand. If your opponent mulligans, you count how many times they have to mulligan before having a basic Pokemon in hand. You may then draw up to 2 cards for each mulligan. You must announce how many cards you're going to draw before you draw any. 7. Any accidental deviations from the rules are fine, as long as they don't radically impact the game; if neither player catches it, that's your fault. 8. Exception to rule 7: If a player is found using a deck that is built illegally, that's really lame and not cool and you should know better. So make sure you built your deck right. Hey everyone! So, there's a Risk Legacy module up on TTS now, and while I like it, there are some things I definitely want to improve... namely, the 3D models. The figurines look like this: https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1257154/risk-legacy With each faction having it's own 1-unit, 3-unit, and base. I have Ax working on doing the base models since he said they'd be easy enough; the module itself has unique 3-unit pieces, and some are fine (the mechs are perfect) while others are kind of, eh (just a standing bear in place of the bear rider, and an F1 car in place of the dune buggy); and all the 1-units in the module are just generic Risk soldiers. So I'd really like to replace those with more fitting things! Even if they're not 100% exact... I was considering, like the Emperor's Royal Guards for the purple faction; I am open for suggestions on 3D models, if anyone out there wants to go looking for things. Models Resource is a great place to start, and I've also been recommended TF3DM and Clara.io. Toss out any and all suggestions; Ax can work with existing models and try to pose them to match the figure poses, so just finding something that thematically fits better. Any and all help on this is greatly appreciated.

Adding a couple new recommendations sitting at opposite ends of the Euro-Ameritrash spectrum. At the Euro end is Concordia. It's only came out 3 years ago but it's already a modern classic. Absolutely impeccable gameplay design and a nice theme of peaceful development during the Roman Empire's golden age. On the opposite end is Blood Bowl: Team Manager Card Game. In this game players manage a monstrous Blood Bowl team over the course of a season. The game combines deck building, card driven play and good old fashioned dice fuckery to neatly re-create the feel of a blood bowl league in the space of a single two hour session. It combines just the right combination of theme, strategy and chance to make it one of my favourite games.

I have absolutely no knowledge of Blood Bowl, so for purposes of showing them off as a "series", would it be worth trying out Blood Bowl first? I'm asking solely based on having no context! ALSO! Gonna throw this out there: We could use a few new players? So if you: A. Own Tabletop Simulator. 2. Can be vaguely funny/interesting/not a weird goober. C. Can follow the recording guide (which I've updated a little, but still wanna make a few more changes on). D. Don't mind hanging out in a Discord chat. And, preferably: 1. Can teach games I and others may not be totally familiar with. B. Have a pretty open schedule, especially day time weekdays in the US. Then let me know how to get in touch with you! You can PM me, post any IM client you want (I use Pidgin now, so I have options...), etc. Just let me know what you bring to the table.

The T posted:I have absolutely no knowledge of Blood Bowl, so for purposes of showing them off as a "series", would it be worth trying out Blood Bowl first? I'm asking solely based on having no context! You don't need to know blood bowl to enjoy the game. The basic premise is that fantasy monsters are playing a super violent version of football and you need to help your team win the most fans. I own the real life version of BB:Team Manager and have played it with plenty of people who know nothing about Blood Bowl and they've enjoyed it just fine. If you are interested in playing the original Blood Bowl I'd strongly recommend playing with the PC games Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition or Blood Bowl 2. Blood Bowl itself is heavily rules and meta intensive and having a specifically made game doing the book work makes it a whole lot more accessible.

So... there are some rough bits in this video. The main one, I've put a little disclaimer about : one player gets really angry about the direction the game goes, and I think it's a little hard to watch in places? But maybe most people aren't as sensitive to that as I am, so give it a go for yourself! But outside of that, there are a few major framerate issues with Benach's video (that we've worked out and so shouldn't be an issue in the future), and a few times where cards are just... flat out played wrong. It's up to the players to make sure cards are being played right, so the game's outcome still stands. Both players have been yelled at, though. :P NoNotTheMindProbe posted:Blood Bowl Yeah, my thought process was more, "in an LP, we should show similar games in order!" but in reality, I probably won't end up doing much of that anyway (planning to do Risk Legacy before any other Risk variants) as well as "introduction to a theme" logic, which we'll be skipping as well (when we play games based on license properties, it's not like we'll always go into it knowing the property), so in the end this is fine and we can give this a go whenever. Gonna throw this out here again: Because every so often I have trouble finding 1 or 2 people to fill in spots for a game due to conflicting schedules, I'm really throwing out there that if you have a fairly open schedule and even a vague interest in games, even if you're not interested in teaching or introducing new games, feel free to get in touch with me if you might be interested in joining.
