Embarrassment-wise that's worse but losing because of a lucky bounce is a lot shittier than losing to a fake QB because your defense hosed up

well we were mostly talking about walk-off TDs, not non-scoring plays that clinched a game

Still feeling rather sullen about the loss after a night's sleep.

I hate to say it but i'm thinking the only way the Chargers meaningfully address the offensive line again - by which I mean spending their picks in the first couple rounds on them and not hoping that castoffs from other teams and late round picks are going - is if Rivers get too hurt to play for an extended period. When he had any semblance of time last night, he cut apart the Steelers' D (I know they're not a top of the league unit, but bear with me here), but the line's down to second and third stringers and they've chronically done a bad job of addressing the depth on it year in and year out. But he signed Orlando Franklin, you say. Well, he's hurt too and wasn't that great when he did play. The line is really their achilles' heel, and I don't think Telesco is going to meaningfully address it beyond those two things.

It's almost as if AJ Smith was fired for doing the exact same thing his last few years here...

Defensively they melted down. Flowers looked bad for a lot of the night and on those last two drives the safeties played terribly. On that Vick scramble the defense looked totally unprepared for the possibility that, y'know.. Michael Vick might actually run for it. I don't think the Chargers have had a well-coached defense since Ron Rivera left, honestly.

Pittsburgh deserves a lot of credit for their win, of course; they clawed their way back into it late and won on a gutsy walk-off score. Le'Veon Bell is a fantastic player and really carried them last night.

The Steelers didn't deserve that win. Shame on San Diego for squandering a truly great qb's career. Phillip Rivers nearly willed that team to a win, but it's difficult to beat a weapon like Le'Veon in the prime of his career. That said, it's still awesome watching Rivers put a broken team on his back, and still almost win despite having a nanosecond to throw

Next morning. Still upset, but I'm gonna try and look at tbe positives. Defense played well for the entire game minus two plays. Rivers is amazing. Gates rules, Verrett looks like a stud.

Get some linemen back, and maybe we can make one of our patented Chargers runs at the end of the year where we have like 5 division games and Miami in the last six weeks.

Looking at the San Diego schedule it seems absolutely possible for them to go 10-6 or 11-5, which might or might not be enough to get a WC spot.

Huh, apparently Seattle's kicker at the time was Josh Brown, our current kicker. Kickers get around.

Bengals are still in command for a division title and top-2 seed, Pitt will lose to Arizona next week and the first game vs Cincy will be tough either way: with Vick it's a huge challenge, with Ben he'll have only rested 5~ weeks and will be a bit gimpy and probably less mobile as he gets used to the injured knee.

Before Fluker the last two guys we drafted in the first round at o-line were Jim Lachey and James Fitzpatrick in 85/86 respectively. If you expand it to the first two rounds, the last guy they took before Fluker was Marcus McNeill and that was seven years prior. They've been hit and miss at best in FA with it also; for every success ala King Dunlap, you have Jared Gaither becoming so lazy he blackballed himself out of the league.

It might not be exciting, but the Cowboys (and I think Pittsburgh's also? a Steelers fan can correct me on this) recent history has shown that there some merit to doing this when you already have a top-tier QB and good talent at the other skill positions in place. Because what the Chargers have been doing regarding their line isn't working.

Yea Pitt put some day 1 and day 2 picks into the O-line for a few years, it got some great players like Pouncey and some whiffs like Adams. Still the best O-line they've assembled since the Bettis days.

Mike Munchak has really made a huge difference, regardless of the o-line's pedigree. Those high picks didn't start playing like high draft picks until he showed up imo
