My guess is that they knew this would happen all along and decided to do it anyway, which rules. It's a shame that you can't legally get the first episode anymore, but that kind of adds to the mystique.

Correct. Japan doesn't have any exception for parody in their copyright laws.

Gintama survives by mostly making fun of other Jump series, getting permission/apologizing in advance, and being so drat funny that it can get away with anything.

Anpanman is a real show? In this week's Ace of Diamond, the opposing pitcher's gimmick is that he pitches better while singing the theme song. I thought they made the show up to make the guy look even dumber than he is.
