The term "rape" in the mythological event "the Rape of the Sabines," Sabinae Raptae, does not refer to physical sexual assault, but is rather a translation of the Latin word raptio meaning seizure or abduction, implying Sabine property was stolen by the capture of their women.

Livy assures us that no sexual assault took place, and that the Sabine women gladly chose to remain with the Romans when offered property/civic rights, as well as free choice of marriage.
