Is there anything to be done if Clover won't boot the OS X installer? From verbose mode, it looks like it never even tries to boot. (I left it for 20 minutes or so as per instructions to wait.)

My mobo is an old/crappy Z68XP-UD3 with a half-assed beta UEFI implementation, if that might be the root cause.
(Right now I am booting System 10.9.5 using Chimera.)

Check Gigabyte's website for a newer bios. Make sure you followed all the configuration steps correctly.

If none of those fix it, install Clover in 'legacy mode'.

No dice I'm afraid; UEFI BIOS on these mobos was an afterthought.

By legacy mode, do you mean boot the USB stick in legacy mode from the BIOS menu or to try a different Clover installer?

To be exact; my Clover USB stick will boot to Clover dark green theme in UEFI mode but not legacy mode.
I select the El Cap USB stick in the dark green theme, choose verbose mode, but then it stalls entirely.

In the Clover installer, there is an option to install in Legacy Mode. Try that option.

EDIT: Oh, it was renamed. Under Bootloader, select 'Install boot0af in MBR'. Format the Clover USB stick first.

I'd like to get some good instructions for legacy mode, so if you are available, I can work with you on Skype.

Thanks very much, that got it going.

I was able to boot into the installer, format my SSD, then start installing El Cap.

Unfortunately, when the installer "finished" and rebooted my machine it had not actually done it. If I mount the volume I can see a volume called OS X Install Data with ~340MB of stuff in it. Something went wrong obviously, is it worth trying again?

Cheers!

I'd be happy to, but I live in GMT+8 so it might be tricky to catch each other.
Perhaps if I install Skype and we see whether we can catch each other at a time is mutually convenient?
And if not, try to organise something?

OK I think I worked it out.

The El Cap installer did some stuff on my SSD then restarted.
Because it went back into Clover drive select and was not yet able to enumerate the disk I tried to install it on, I assumed that something went wrong.

Instead it looks like this was intentional.
After booting back into the El Cap installer, the installation automatically continued and finished successfully.

Oddly, after installing Clover onto the SSD, I was able to UEFI boot into that disk from my BIOS and then boot the installed El Cap from there!

Success!

It turned out that my Clover was fine, which is why my NVRAM seemed to be working except for ROM value.

The problem was an oddity in Clover, where it will look for a NVRAM.plist file on all volumes, even non-boot ones.

Inside
/Volumes/EFI/EFI/CLOVER/misc/debug.log

1:694 0:025 Loading nvram.plist from Vol 'Macintosh SSD' - loaded, size=795
1:698 0:004 PutNvramPlistToRtVars ...

(Macintosh SSD is my System 10.9 disk.)

I junked that nvram.plist file and rebooted.
1:635 0:024 PutNvramPlistToRtVars: nvram.plist not found

Now my ROM is being populated and iMessage works!

To be exact, I have a fresh install with a GTX 670 which has DVI-D and DVI-I ports. The DVI monitor works fine but the VGA monitor (using a DVI-VGA adaptor) cannot be detected.

Edit: duh, the SMBIOS was set to iMac. I set it to MacPro3,1 and it worked fine. Leaving this monument to stupidity as a warning/reminder to others.

So, uh, why am I booting directly into Windows now and not even getting a choice of which operating system? I'm about this close to just using this Unibeast Sierra installer I made before I gave up on OSX for not supporting this year's crop of GPUs. I almost never use it anymore because of the lack of acceleration but I still sometimes need Pixelmator for something.

Occam's razor suggests that Clover was only ever installed onto that mech drive all along, and you used that to boot into OS X on your SSD.
