In Denmark, we used to allow the Home Guard (Official sanctioned militia) to have Assualt rifles and other weapons at home, in secured cabinets of course, in case the Soviet Union should invade. The idea was that the Home Guardsmen would just grab their weapons and equipment they kept at home, and assemble at locations off the grid, and prepare to resist the Soviets for as long as possible, until the Americans and British could come up and help us. After the Cold War, this was just stupid. And then a father went off the reservation, killed his kids, his wife and then himself. Today, the Home Guard still have the rifles and equipment at home, but not the ammo, they have to go and pick that up at their nearest base, to be fair, if the Soviets do invade, Twitter will warn them much earlier now.

Steinreich isn't "Stone rich". Reich means kingdom or nation, not rich. Not that it matters, as Steinreich just means that their families came from the German city of Steinreich, the Stone Realm.

The best thing, the comic is actually pretty good. A solid standard Christmas story, with a minor miracle, lot's of families, a casino robbery and casual alcoholism. Bog standard. Go on, read it yourself, it's on their website.

How the hell do you even spend that much on candles? Roman Senators probably spent less on candles. How?

jamal posted:That's how many private utilities in the us work. Ha, we had a storm back in '99 that basically knocked over most above-ground power lines. the Danish response: "Okay, maybe we should just put the whole thing underground instead". Only the big power lines remain above ground and a handful within cities, were they are put underground whenever roadwork is otherwise done. Archaeologists of the future, are going to think we Danes buried copper to honor our ancestors.

Malachite_Dragon posted:Is this some extended edition of the Star Spangled Banner? These aren't the lyrics I was taught as a kid No, that's how you sing a national anthem, you sing the first verse and then start playing football or drinking or whatever. The rest of the anthem are only sung by weirdos and nationalists, I'm Danish, and I only remember the first line of the second verse of the Danish national anthem, it's something about chain mail wearing giants resting in burial grounds. Discworld actually makes fun of this fact, the second verse of Ankh-Morporks anthem is just humming, 'cause no one remembers it anyway.
