How do pirates even work? When I'm laying out a sub's path, the time measurement assumes my sub will be moving at 1x and can't target subs. I can't put him on the sub until after it's targeted. Am I missing something?

Ask me about time-shares at scenic Turtle Rock!
When you drag from an outpost that has a pirate your timer should already be showing the time when the pirate would be arriving. You can see this by looking at the measured time in the void and then watching it increase 2x when you lock it onto an outpost.

Though the snap-to-outpost thing makes it difficult to intercept if that sub is predicted to be very close to that outpost and you actually might lose some time due to that snap.

Man, the end of that game got intense. I have to admit, I'd gotten a bit complacent and didn't notice just how many mines Jubelio was grabbing until the countdown timer switched to his name and I panicked. And Nybble threw an absolutely heroic amount of drillers at one of my mines which preventing me from launching everything at mines myself. I got pretty luck with specialists though; at one point I had a Tycoon and twoForemans on one factory, meaning that instead of 6 drillers every 8 hours I got 21 drillers every 5.3 hours.

Fun tidbit: When Jubelio asked me for funding on day 5, I was actually in the middle of sending an armada of drillers to invade him. That made me rethink my plans, and I ended up invading Eponymous instead (since you both had a pretty large army but Eponymous had more Neptunium, and I (wrongly) thought that Jubelio wouldn't be able to make up such a big gap).

It's my first game too. I think I got off to a bad start by trying to expand in every direction and not really focusing my efforts. Now I'm stretched pretty thin while everyone around me seems pretty established and well defended. If anyone sneezed in the right direction they could blow me off the map.

Are there any good strategy guides for new players? Or does it all come from experience?

This game starts to get crazy after the first day when all the neutral outposts have been claimed. My starting strategy was to try to form alliances with as many other players as I could and then backstab them one by one as the game went along. It worked pretty well, but now that we are going into day 3 I find myself questioning everyone for even the smallest of reasons and I have no idea who I can trust for now and who is planning to launch a massive offensive against me when I sleep... :ohdear: :stare:

Uglier on the inside.

I ended up losing my game. I was in second, fighting for first, when instead of building a third mine, 1st sent 200 drillers into the heart of my base, with a general, thief and Infiltrator. I was entirely unprepared for that possibility. He ordered to chase down ave catch my queen.

I would have had a chance had not hosed up an order while very tired and not sent my admiral with my Queen, allowing him to catch her. I got a smuggler to her destination, but she was overtaken en route. I threw specialists and drills to allies, but all I had to do to win was live.

I'm in a game and I'm planning an attack with one player (Brown) to attack another player on my border (Blue). While this planning occurs I learn I'm surrounded by an alliance I'm not in and I'm forced to abandon my plans and help Blue instead. When I finally launch an attack on Brown he is understandably not happy with me.

A few hours later I get reports Brown is asking about my Queen and then I see a Navigator / Pirate / Assassin combo from Brown appear on my sonar heading for me.

I think I've made a friend.

I just finished my first game and got first place. The road to victory was paved with a lot of manipulation and lies and betrayal but the gold medal made it all worth it in the end. The tactical aspect of the game itself is really fun, but the social aspect definitely takes it to another level. I've never experienced anything like it in another game - I think in part because of the length of the matches (this particular match went for 7 days 12 hours). You really have the time to build up relationships with other players - real or fake - and can play the social game just as much like a chess match as the game itself.

5 things I learned:

1. If you drill a mine before day 4, you're absolutely doing it wrong.
2. The Admiral and Tycoon are great specialists to have. Having both is exponentially better than one or the other.
3. Engaging another player in a head to head all out war is absolutely crushing for both sides and trying to catch back up to everyone else afterwards is almost impossible.
4. Getting funding from another player while you have the Tycoon and Admiral is drat near game breaking and can save you from almost any situation.
5. If you really enjoy the game, the Level 2 Security Clearance is totally worth it.

Lights, the Peacock King, First of His Name.

I just won my first game as well, mainly on the back of having allied with the guys above and below me and letting them start wars with their neighbors while I swooped in and eviscerated the guy to my east/west. Did very little actual politics other than forging that alliance in the first day; on day 6 or so the guy north of me told me he was sending me a "gift". Said gift composed of 60 drillers, a navigator, and a pirate, heading towards my queen. I pulled an assassin and 60 drillers to her base and the "gift" promptly turned around. He didn't try any other funny business even when it was clear that I was going to win if the rest of the remaining players didn't unite to attack me.

Speed bonuses don't really stack. Note the wording says "than a normal sub", or something along those lines.

Goon Game "goon clown subs"" Post-Mortem Write-up: Well...this sure was a game. It was probably the most hilarious and intense games of Subterfuge I've played yet. With back-stabs upon back-stabs happening all over this game was extremely drama filled.

Days 1-4:
We start our 10 player game and turns out the map is extremely cramped. My starting position is absolutely poo poo and there are barely any safe expansion zones anywhere. I realize if I want to get anywhere I need to start making allies fast. I share the most intimate border with Rotaryfun and I quickly realize that If I want to not die I need to start a strong peaceful alliance with him. I make contact with all my other neighbors and work out deals for our early expansions with everyone except for one: SAmalt. SAmalt decides early to not want to work out a deal for an outpost and so it seems I'm now roped into an early skirmish with him. I start working through my diplomatic channels and eventually get the assistance of Manofteflon, Rotaryfun, and RatherWT to help out with the fight.

While all this is going on all I see my outposts are too spread-out to effectively move subs around. I can make an Admiral early to gain some speed but its not enough to really gain any true mobility. At this point I decide to plop down a Mine extremely early (~19hours into the game) and then just hope to work out peaceful deals with people in exchange for funding. Extremely risky but its the only viable play I can come up with. I build it with the only direct threat being Rotaryfun. I now need to do by best to keep him happy by sending him gifts and stuff to try and build up cooperation.

Days 5-6:
On another border I get fairly nervous about the player Porktree who has parked a sizable force that could quickly take some of my vulnerable outposts. I see him attacking player Logicon211 and offer to send what I can to help him take it if he agrees to move his force away from my border. He agrees and takes this threat off my back. However I'm not really wanting to start a war with Logicon211 so I immediately inform him of the situation I had worked out. He rightfully inst happy but suggests that if I offer him funding he will shrug it off.... to which I quickly comply. At the same time this all happens player Mt_Thing decides to go on the offensive against Porktree while Logicon211 also gangs up to attack from the opposite direction. Porktree is goes down fast but just before he gets eliminated he offers me a bunch of subs, a Tycoon, and some Assassins to me as gifts since I earlier offered to help against Logicon211. Turned out that sending a measly 8 subs was a great investment even though I was playing both sides.

SAmalt gets taken down quickly from a combined assault from Sgm288 and Manofteflon while I help out as I can. I manage to get a Hypnotist and start scooting around stealing what I can and start taking captured specialists with the intent to get some stuff to Rotary and eventually give the Hypnotist to Teflon to use as he wishes to be a good ally and make everyone keeps happy.....

Days 6-9:
....but no-one wants to be happy and I get a notification from Rotaryfun that he is backstabbing me and darts straight for one of my mines (that bastard). I'm caught off guard but I manage to assemble a defensive force but they arrive 30min too late and I briefly lose control of the mine and lose some Np bringing me down in line with the other players Immediately after that Manofteflon and Rotary then combine forces to assault another one of my mines. Teflon sending the large force while Rotary using his navi/pirate/assassin hunter (which I partly helped him build... that bastard) to kill any specialist I have over there.I manage to work out just enough movements of specialists, subs, and promotions to successfully defend my other mine from them with plenty of subs to spare. However this now makes my border with Rotary and Teflon needing to be permanently fortified preventing me from doing much else.

Logicon211 tells me he is giving me a day's warning that he intends to attack me to catch up. I bluff a little bit and tell him that because I will lose my mine I will no longer be in the lead and that its Mt_Thing that he wants to attack instead. According to my time machine I was still scheduled to win but very soon after I said that Mt_Thing builds another mine and puts his name at the top of the leader board making my statement true. Logicon211 then goes on the offensive against him instead. No idea if he ever actually took my initial bluff seriously but hey... I'll take it.

After this apparently poo poo gets really crazy with backstabbing and trading of mines all outside of my vision. Manofteflon also wants to get in on some of the action against Mt_Thing and attempts to take some his outposts in my vision. I try and briefly steal one under his nose and then I also strategically start funding Mt_Thing to make sure Teflon loses one of his battles against a factory. This was only a fairly minor retaliation against Teflon.... but it felt pretty good to deny him.

As time is running out I shuffle around my defensive forces and gather enough drillers to build one last mine that will boost me into the first. I'm now constantly paranoid that Rotary will manage to throw something at me I wont be able to defend despite the constant scenarios I kept running through my head. When I finally build the mine and Rotary goes all out and starts throwing a total of 248 drillers to my closest outpost. Thanks to two Smugglers running around, a General, a War Hero, and a sacrificial Assassin I manage to defend. With time running down the rest is out of my control. Logicon211 and Teflon I can see each making their own desperate final moves to gain ground but in the end I end up taking first place in what was an extremely unpredictable game. A win that quite honestly I should have never really had a shot at. Sometimes very early mining can work out but its a bitch to get to the finish line.

Was a good game. I was Logicon211 there. I spent a bit too much time taking out mines from people in the lead I couldn't keep. So my neptunium never got high enough to even get close. Waited too long for my first mine too.

I also am bad at the backstabbing part. So I've been giving people day warning deals that I've yet to break. And have yet to have someone break it for me either. I gave you that days warning trinexx because you were in the lead at the time and it was looking like you were gonna win. Then I saw rotary's forces go in on you and since you were in a weird spot for me to attack anyways I figured I'd stop my northern neighbors instead.

You were still too far from me when you built that last mine I couldn't stop you either. My biggest takeaway here is to get a mine up at some point. Especially if others built some. I waited too long and thought I could just win on a warpath but its hard to hold mines built by another player

In retrospect of my first game:

I did a decent job at the early game, opening lines of communication with all the other players from the start, and grabbing SAmalt's stuff when it became clear he was going to get ganged up on no matter what due to a lack of communicating with others. Multiple players ended up sending me gifts from all sides, and nobody really parked big forces against my borders (until Rather did starting mid game). I tried to build a variety of alliances that mostly stayed open and talking through the game.

The point where everyone had staked out territory was where things got interesting. I avoided building a mine too early as I didn't want to draw too much attention, but my hesitation (I waited until a couple other players already had mines) ended up costing me in the end. I also waited a little too long to betray Mt_thing, and failed to consider doing it only out of Trinexx's vision. After that, I pretty much got desperate and tried playing catch-up by grabbing anything near me that was un-protected.

An intense game! I will be ready for another soon...
