Well now we're adding "such a law would never be passed" on top of "state and local LEOs would ignore it," "federal LEOs would ignore it," "federal LEOs would get killed trying to enforce it," and "the President would be deposed if they attempted to follow up on the dead federal LEOs." Oh, and "court challenges for decades." So what the hell are y'all so nervous about then?

Yep, it's Obama not all of the "law abiding gun owners" who shoot up schools/churches/etc and and then are disowned by "law abiding gun owners' who are in the same breath willing to shoot at federal officers to take away their precious toys and react to said shooting by buying more guns. Can someone who wants unfettered access to guns explain why the US has a unique problem with gun violence AND suicide the rest of the developed nations do not? Is it also Obama? You can also provide a positive viewpoint on these issues, but I haven't seen one reasonable prognosis or policy solution.

LeJackal posted:Actually hunting is an important part of conservation and wildlife management. In addition, many families and individuals still hunt as a means for survival, to actually have enough food. Wildlife management and hunting for sport do not completely overlap. I'd be in favor of subsidizing these families and their access to food. Having to resort to actual hunting for your own food is pretty weird, but not immoral as would be hunting for sport though. LeJackal posted:So just about every firearm is exempt from your proposals. Thats neato. The primary purpose of many many guns is not hunting. They wouldn't be useful for that. They aren't used for that. No serious hunter uses them for hunting. LeJackal posted:No, there are a number of categories that are technically sound and distinct. Smoothbore versus rifled, categorization by their mechanism of action, caliber, open versus closed bolt, method of loading, and so on. These distinctions aren't arbitrary in the slightest. Denying that most guns are made with a certain purpose in mind for each of them is the peak of absurdity. Why do you think there is so much variety among guns? LeJackal posted:I don't even understand this part. Would you abandon such categories as "small arms" vs. "light weapons"? What about "long gun"? Are these categories meaningless? And demanding that the classification of guns limit itself to technical categories is a red herring. Because we can classify guns according to their purpose, and that's absolutely legitimate. If we want to create a category called "hunting guns", that regroups guns that are used for hunting, we can. If there's no way I can make this distinction, I'm going to have to abandon the idea of an exception for hunting. I'm sorry, LeJackal, but if it can't be done, then it can't be done. LeJackal posted:Too cumbersome? By what standard? What is cumbersome? Overall length? Weight? What do you mean by disproportionate lethality? LingcodKilla posted:Why are you so creepy? I'd like to point out that none of the pro-gun people around here has come out and said "I would be a law-abiding citizen and surrender my guns if the law mandated it". Nor have they even deigned to say "I would register my gun and get a permit if the law mandated it". I am not sure any person who wouldn't say these things ought to own a gun.
