There is a/some Reddit support dude who seems to be able to work magic sometimes, so might be worth giving that a go.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleFi/comments/wdljfi/how_to_submit_a_reddit_request/

Or it looks like that may have been killed? Not sure. But yeah Google Fi support is often hilariously bad, like not old Comcast bad, but just like amazingly/ purposefully incompetent bad.

Yup, that just goes to their social team now, whom I've already had tell me they're monitoring the situation!

:jpmf:
Fi support consists of the script the front liners have, and if your problem is not on that script, they will proceed to "escalate to a specialist" whose sole function is to sit on your ticket forever. They will politely respond to inquiries with excuses about "waiting to hear back from another department" but never actually do anything new until you give up and leave for another carrier.

There is/was a guy on Reddit who had some kind of in with Fi that you could resort to. This did get me some action on things in 2016/17, but at some point even his tickets got subsumed into the specialist queue and became mostly useless. Sounds like they made that official since the last time I had to use it.

I had to resort to filing a ticket with the FCC to get a billing issue addressed by someone with literally any ability to make decisions beyond the script, and by the time they did, I had long since been forced to move to another carrier just to have a working phone.

I got a hold of Assurant and they just gave me the phone number for Google Fi. Amazing.

Fi is going to possibly get annoying with the iPhone 14 if you don't have an eSIM already.

The iPhone 14 is eSIM only in the US and has no physical SIM card tray. But to switch to eSIM on an iPhone for Fi, you need to insert a physical card. I assume this isn't an issue if you activated Fi with an eSIM in the first place though.

EDIT:

Multiple reports of Wi-Fi Calling working on iPhones. Google now officially states that Wi-Fi Calling works on iPhone:

Google Fi FAQ posted:

Can I make calls over Wi-Fi?
Yes. More detail below:

Phones designed for Fi: Just make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and make a call like you normally would using the phone dialer.

Phones compatible with Fi (may vary by phone): If you have an Android phone, you can turn on Wi-Fi calling on the "Phone settings" page in the Google Fi app. If you have an iPhone®, you can turn on Wi-Fi calling from the iOS Settings page.

For all phones, if Wi-Fi and cellular networks are available, Fi will route your call over whichever one gives you the best experience. For more information on Wi-Fi calling, please visit our Help Center.

Has anyone left Pixel Pass?

YouTube Premium - meh, I can live without it
YouTube Music - sucks
Google Play Pass - worthless
Google One - I use this
Device Protection - I use this but I think there are other options?

I feel like I'm paying for a few things I don't use or care about, but I don't know what the consequences are for leaving Pixel Pass.

How much storage are you actually using on Google One? I pay $20 a year for like 200GB. Definitely not worth locking yourself into a phone carrier over.

$55 per month gets you those subscriptions and a Pixel 6 Pro, and $5 month discount on Fi subscription.

The 200gb option is what's included. My wife takes about 5 terabytes per minute of photos and videos of our kids, so we are sharing the space with the Google family thing.

you can scan the qr code from the webpage while logged in with your iphone, then open the fi app. it works, no need for a sim. I used to switch back and forth from iphone to android that way with no troubles.

also pixel pass is garbage, its a disguised carrier plan that you can't easily leave with a massive financial hit.

at least the old pixel subscription if you leave you can get another carrier to pay the remaining balance. with pixel pass that balance would blow through all competitor reimbursement caps.

FogHelmut

If I quit the Pixel Pass after one year, I only owe the balance on my Pixel 6 Pro (half of the price of a whole phone), do I not? Are there other fees?

Ask me about that time I told people mixing bleach and vinegar is okay
Pixel pass would be mildly tempting if I wasn't grandfathered into a cheaper YouTube red/music plan already.

Also the new unlimited plan on Fi is decent if you have it as a family plan. Some goon posted about a goon family plan I have been part of for a few years now, we split the bill with Splitwise using PayPal or Venmo.

Now that Wifi calling is officially working on iphones, Im really tempted to dump my stupid Pixel 6 for an iphone 13 mini if I can find one cheap. Im tired of giant phones, especially when they are as janky as the P6 has been. I wish they would come out with another P3A size phone.

Do it! I think the 13 Mini starts at $600 now which is a pretty decent price. I swapped (back) to iPhone while staying on Google Fi about 6 months ago and I've been really happy with it.

So what do iPhones lose on Fi now, anything? I have a friend who's a committed iPhone user but he was interested in Fi. I'm also thinking of leaving Android for the dark side.

You have to use the Google Fi app for voicemails, but they’re still saved and transcribed just like they would be on iOS default. I’m not sure there’s anything else.

Thanks for the info. I've been using a MacBook air and an iPad air and both have been a great experience so I figured the phone would be more of the same. I might wait until reviews come out for the pixel 7 but I'm not holding my breath.

i'll be ditching my Pixel 6 in a few months for an iphone now that Goog fi seems to have some feature parity, I don't generally get a lot of voicemails and i always have that app installed anyway.

You can't jump between T-Mobile, Sprint, or US Cellular towers, you're on T-Mobile towers, you won't get 5G, and I think that's literally it now that Wi-Fi Calling and the VPN are there as well as international tethering.

You DO however get eSIM which only Pixels and iPhones can do on Fi, apparently. Weird that no other phones get it I think?

Thanks, on top of that he was on Sprint with iPhone Forever and now that he's T-Mo, I assume he's got their equivalent if they have one. So he'd lose that too, but that may not be a dealbreaker for him.

How am I supposed to use all of the data on unlimited plans if they throttle the video? How am I supposed to stay under the cap on the flex plans if they don't?

I have a weird issue where I got a pixel 6a on the payment plan, but it shows as unactivated because I only used an esim and apparently the physical sim is the IMEI they use for determining activation status.

I think if that happens you need to reset the APN settings. Some claim it happens every time there's an update.

Bah, is Fi no longer accepting Galaxy S9s for trade if they're less than 256 GB? The 64- and 128 GB options weren't even available when I checked today. :(

Anybody else having lots of weird wifi calling poo poo? I keep finding local numbers will connect to other people, who usually have an Indian accent, and who don't appear to be able to hear me at all.

There's two numbers (an eye doctor and a pharmacist) where it happens 100% consistently. If I turn off wifi it works immediately and I get the right place. Most landlines I call are fine, there's just a few random ones. And it doesn't happen with cell #'s at all.

I finally upgraded (to an S22 Ultra) and, incidentally, switched to the full unlimited plan for the month in anticipation of a trip to Japan (leaving tomorrow). I've started getting notifications that my mobile connection has no Internet, which is awful timing.

Is there a fix for this? Should I manually change networks or something? This is my first Made For Fi phone, so I'm clueless. Thanks.

Whoa, they will definitely have you reset 50 things that won't do anything and then "report it to the engineers" who will get back to you in 7-10 days. (No they won't)
