USB doesn't just connect like it did pre-6.0, now it defaults to charge until you make that selection.

I'm with ATT now and use my Google Voice number as my business number. I'd like to switch to a wireless carrier that is friendlier about international travel and was looking at Fi and T-Mobile. Since Fi runs over top of T-Mobile it seems like it would be a superset of coverage for a cheaper price. If I sign up for Fi can I use my voice number then port my wireless number later? I don't want to switch if it turns out I have lovely coverage at home. I know I'll lose my voice number when I finally port my mobile number over. If it doesn't work out can I can cancel the service and keep my Voice number associated with my account?

Got the SIM card today, activated and ported my ATT number. When I tried T-Mobile a few years ago I had no service at the house. Now I'm rocking LTE on Fi, so no idea if that's Sprint or just better coverage. Porting was super easy. Now I just got to decide if I should run SMS through hangouts or use the normal channel. Whats everyone else doing?

The Aphasian posted:What storage capacity did everyone go for on the 6p? 64 gb seems fine to me; it's more than enough for my iPad. With Google Photos automatically clearing local storage, is there any reason to go to 128? I don't need to watch movies from my phone, but I would download a lot of Google Play playlists and podcasts to save on the data plan. 64gb. I have a ton of music, photos, and load up movies for flights no problem. I don't really play any bigger games though, nor do I shoot much video. Those two thing might have changed my decision, but probably not. With Google Photos auto backup and my manual photo backup I don't need every photo I've ever taken of my dog with me at all times. And I tend to pin my music to my phone rather than stream most of the time.

Honestly, my choice wasn't about saving money month to month but about having a much better experience when travelling abroad than what I got with AT&T. Oh, and international calling at reasonable rates. Once you start paying for data, you tend to notice a bit more when there are free WiFi spots around. I never bothered since AT&T was so fast and it was a use-it-or-lose-it allotment. I think net it'll end up being cheaper for me overall, with a handful of months being more expensive.

It won't hurt to confirm. To be clear, this advice is to call after the port is completed and successful to verify everything is taken care of with your previous carrier. The porting process will automatically cancel out that line. Many people have made the mistake of canceling one before setting up the next and their number is gone as soon as the cancellation goes through with little recourse to get it back. So, finish the port before calling the previous carrier over anything.

Also, I can't receive texts sent to my device via the web, unless I just haven't figured it out yet. You have to enable the option to route Fi SMS through Hangouts in the Hangouts option. Personally, I found the convenience of being able to text on my computer not worth having to use hangouts over Messenger. Your SMS/MMS will route over WiFi either way if available, the only thing Hangouts gives you is the synchronization with desktop / other devices.

If you use Hangouts you will always need a data connection.

The Slack Lagoon posted:Fi might be neat but it's a lot more expensive than cricket, and att coverage seems pretty good from everywhere I've been Yeah, I don't understand the nerds who are using Fi to save that last ten bucks a month without ever using data anywhere. I get savings by using the same about 2 gigs I was using on AT&T, without paying every month for the extra "emergency" data that I rarely ever used. Now, if I have a month where I really need 5 or 6 gigs, I just pay for it. I don't baby my data, but I am more conscientious about using free WiFi where it is available. HelloWifi is good for that (although ugly as sin). The Fi killer feature for me is global data. I travel for work (and fun) so having the same data in Europe or China is a killer feature. Who cares if my per-gig price is more expensive than a local SIM, because I can still use my US number and not change anything. I literally don't have to think about it, which is very valuable. If I didn't travel I'd be back on a pre-paid plan or AT&T which has great service around where I live. Fi group (family) plans seem to be priced so as to not motivate you to pool your friends into a single group, but just as something available so mom and dad can put everyone onto a single bill and keep track of them.

Which was exactly my point. Why bother switching if you're happy to try and save $5 bucks a month by babying your data and turning your phone into a brick when away from WiFi? Just stay on your other plan!

I solved my Messenger/Hangouts SMS problem with Pushbullet and getting most of my friends to just install WhatsApp instead. HelloGuestWifi got an update last week and if you haven't tried it, or tried in the past, I suggest you give it another go. It'll automatically log you in to hotspots that have a portal. You still have to tell it to try the first time, but from there on out it'll do the work for you. Whatever the update was made it much, much faster. Now I'm on the Wifi by the time I get through the door at most of the places I shop that provide WiFi with a "Click to Accept terms" button. Very convenient and will help you manage your data costs just that extra little bit.

One thing I can't seem to figure out is getting the Google Assistant to send SMS via Hangouts. Maybe that's not supported yet? I switched over from Messenger to unify SMS etc across phone/tablet/desktop whatever, but I can't seem to figure out how to have the Assistant use Hangouts. It doesn't and won't. Don't burn energy trying to figure out the rationale. My gut feeling is that hangouts SMS integration is going away in the future. Maybe when RCS rolls out.

I ended up switching off of Fi a few months ago. A couple of reasons. First, and primarily, work is paying for my cellphone coverage now. No matter how cheap Fi is it doesn't beat AT&T for free. AT&T unfucking their international plan with the day pass really helps here too. Second, call quality at home is terrible. I routinely dropped calls between Sprint and T-Mobile at my house and the WiFi calling worked like hot garbage even on my 150/7 connection with a great router & WiFi setup. Seriously, I don't know why that system worked so terribly when Duo or WhatsApp calling works great. Third, the network switching gimmick never really worked for me. It seemed like it spend a lot of time looking for a network for some reason. Finish a call? Switch networks. Get off of WiFi? Lets switch networks again. Travelling worked great, tethering worked well. I liked that it just loving worked when I traveled to Europe or China, but for some reason it couldn't get it together in east TX. Now, was that enough to motivate me to switch back to AT&T? Not at all. I'd probably go back to Fi if work stopped picking up the bills, but while they are there is no compelling feature to keep me on Fi. It'd really help if Fi didn't treat the handful of devices it supports the same as every other carrier. How come we don't have RCS on Fi? Or much better SMS everywhere integration? Or voice mail or other features? Or quicker update rollouts? There is so much potential just sitting there and the usual Google no-announcements or updates policy doesn't help at all.
