One theory that I heard - that I can't find the source of again - is that she's the First Order's primary anti-Jedi / Force User soldier, and Finn has something to with her unit, which is how he knows how to use a lightsaber, and how there's toys out there of First Order troopers with shields like in the original Ep4 concept art. I think the force awakens in Finn and he has to beat a hasty escape, leading to Phasma hunting them down throughout the movie. Making her the Boba Fett in more ways then one.
