Also employers would need to actually pay people proper wages to do lovely jobs. People would just say no to gross, dangerous, or backbreaking work until the pay was worth it. This would be very good for the people overall even if it made some things more expensive, the gains in wages would more than make up for it, the top would end up having to eat it.

No offence man but you clearly didn't read the article. First of all, it talks about how this is a development since a cross-party consensus on Uruguay's energy future was reached in 2008, so figures from 2006 are no longer relevant. Second, the article clearly addresses the issue of importing electricity:

And third, while it's true that Uruguay is a much smaller place than Ontario, a) their p/c income is somewhere around $20,000 US so it's not like they're some poor backward developing country where no one has ever heard of electricity; and b) the fact that they have a smaller population also means they're doing this with a smaller tax base--there's not really any reason why a success like this couldn't be scaled up to a larger society. The biggest thing Uruguay has going for it, honestly, seems to just be the political will to actually do something about this rather than a) ignoring it or b) using it as an excuse for corruption.

Considering that a country most Canadians would consider developing or "third world" looks on track to achieve an 88% cut in carbon emission from their 2009-13 average by 2018 while simultaneously decreasing electricity costs and stopping energy imports, we in Canada should be ashamed of ourselves.

It's almost like we're the most uselessly corrupt country in the G7 or something!

When I was getting my internet hooked up the Shaw worker was asking me why I wasn't getting TV as well. I told him with the insane rates Shaw charges due to their monopoly I can't afford both internet and TV, and if I'm paying so much for internet I might as well use it to save money on TV. I got a whole speech about how Shaw isn't a monopoly because there's also Telus and actually profits have been down because more and more people like me aren't getting TV. Shaw is going to have to keep upping internet rates to compensate for their losses on TV, it's a real problem and anyone who doesn't get TV + internet is basically a free-loader being subsidized by TV subscribers.

I told him that even if their profits are down, they are still turning a huge profit and don't "need" to raise rates. If people don't buy as much TV they just downsize the TV side of things. Also who gives a gently caress if their profits go way down, so long as they can pay their staff and keep the company running they should be happy. He just muttered about how young people these days not paying for TV is going to "bring the whole system down" and "if Shaw can't turn a good enough profit a lot of people will be out of jobs". I told him I hope shaw goes out of business because I didn't subscribe to TV and the government buys the whole thing on the cheap. He said "you really think government will be able to run the internet? You'll be paying for union staff and you'll be stuck with a real monopoly, besides a lot of people will lose their jobs"

I guess Shaw's got their staff pretty well brainwashed.

\/ Just don't pay for cable and the whole system will collapse into socialism.

As soon as you add a car, specially an SUV driven by someone middle class or above, it's basically a get out of jail free card. If you ever want to murder someone, just hit them with your car. You probably won't even lose your license (that might hurt your ability to get to work!!) permanently. Cars just kill people all the time, they're accidents, nothing can possibly be done. Better infrastructure? Too expensive. Stricter rules? Oppressive.

In the military the people who kill people and are trained to kill people are a tiny minority. Most are like trades types jobs or computer stuff or loving web developers. They all exist to support the people who kill people, and fix and maintain the infrastructure needed to support said killers.

I actually know a surprising amount of military people, and they're all just working class shlubs fixing engines or doing accounting or computer stuff. None of them give a poo poo about the military, "the mission" or patriotic garbage and would try to quit before they had to kill anyone or really deploy outside of Canada. It's an easy job with a fantastic pension and benefits and that's it. One dude is an officer and excited to see combat and fight bad guys and "help people" but he's the minority.

Police, yeah, that's 100% people who want to power trip and shoot bad guys because all cops end up as front line soldiers on the war on crime, you can't become a cop and spend your entire career fixing police cars or maintaining the police website.

Dude was kidnapped and had his loving thumb cut off. I think in this case we've gotten our pound of flesh out of the guy. For me it's not this specific case, just our very lax cultural and legal attitudes towards driving and road safety. Driving should not be mandatory to be a functional adult in our society outside of a few neighbourhoods of a few big cities, and driving should be taken a lot more seriously where it's harder to get a license and easier to lose it.

But because everyone has to drive to work and or they'll actually starve to death in their suburbs we can't have stricter driving laws because even the worst driver who should never be given control of a huge vehicle has no alternative, so the bar has to be set that low.

Like still every time someone is run down by a driver not paying attention it's always "why didn't that pedestrian look???" "You can't just walk blindly into the street even if you have a green!". There's still a ton of victim blaming and excuses for the perpetrator. Totally unpredictable accidents do happen, but in almost every case they are avoidable by simply paying full attention to driving, treating every second like it's a terrifying life or death situation, and making sure your vehicle is in safe working order. Just "I wasn't paying attention" is an accepted valid excuse. It should be criminal negligence. Treat them a few steps below commercial pilots or something. You don't have to ban people for life, but if you rear end someone, or hit a pedestrian, or get into any accident you could have possibly avoided it should involve an actual investigation where you have to prove it was unavoidable and were following all rules to the letter or else your license is instantly taken away and you need to start from scratch to get it back, which should involve fairly lengthy and intense training.

So if someone committed a crime that would normally carry say a 5 year sentence, but before the guy was even arrested or charged some vigilantes decided to lock him away in a terrible dungeon for 5 years with even worse conditions than a government prison. He eventually gets out or the police find him and finally charge him for the crime. Would the court say he's basically already served his sentence, give him a reduced sentence, or full sentence?

This is actually the key. Parking policy above all others determines car usage in an area. Some people advocate more on the road side of things, but that just leads to crippling congestion. Tackle the parking end of things and you can have smooth flowing roads AND low car usage. When "the market" is actually determining the price and amount of parking, driving into a city generally becomes ridiculously expensive.
