Pretty lovely to have routes cut and it will definitely increase the number of people who are landlocked. Really surprised about PG to Dawson Creek getting dropped - would have thought the northern route towards GP would have had enough traffic to justify.

Keep in mind that most of these routes are on the "Trail of Tears", which Greyhound has desperately wanted to ditch for ages, but was forced to keep because they were the only game in town. It was so expensive and inconvenient that they started running a bus once a day up to take hospital patients to the regional hospital in Prince George (since everything not in PG got "centralized" years ago), so Greyhound had the excuse they needed to ditch their northern routes. It's gross but not unexpected, more people are just going to hitchhike along the highway is all. What could go wrong?

edit: the Nanaimo-Vancouver one isn't a surprise, since BC Transit runs a bus between the cities (I think you have to transfer in Duncan). I didn't know Greyhound was even allowed to run Vancouver-Victoria, because Wilson's has exclusive rights to run buses on the ferry. Anyway, sucks to be you if you wanted travel options on the Island or in the North, buy a car losers.

I would still love to see the newly sovereign Republic of Alberta trying to negotiate with/invade British Columbia to get their oil to port. Jason Kenney in a Napoleon getup, loading a homemade artillery gun in the back of an F350.

Alternately, I guess now Alberta is offering to invest in the pipeline for Kinder-Morgan, which some people on Twitter are aghast at because that would be GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP, so I guess they'll have to just buy KM their pipeline and let KM keep it for free.

The anti-pipeline half of B.C. will be furious, the pro-pipeline half and Alberta will never give them credit anyway, and I imagine everyone else will just be pissed we wasted so much money. Sounds like a winner. And that’s before everyone finds out gas prices aren’t going down!

Anyway, I spent most of last spring having an extended media-fuelled BC election panic attack, and I’ve intentionally been avoiding this thread and the papers in general lately for that reason, so good luck to everyone in Ontario and take care. The NDP is never going to get their poo poo together on their own but at least we can sort of kick them in the right direction. Sometimes.

Really an argument that we should fund the system more to reduce wait times because private surgeries cost around 5-20x what a public one would, but the people who pretend MRI and surgery wait times aren't a big deal for things that aren't life threatening are out to lunch.

Our system is oriented around ignoring issues until they're critical.

In BC we’ve been slowly chipping away at wait times one type of surgery at a time and it’s been working well as far as one-time projects go. It’s pretty clear to me if the health authorities would prioritize wait times instead or prioritizing more management and opportunities for outsourcing labour/further enriching surgeons, we could easily improve wait times dramatically across the board. As it stands Royal Columbia’s Hospital (for instance) has about eight different employers and nobody can explain how that benefits anybody except the extra management required.

Saanich has a new mayor as well so everyone in greater Victoria is looking forward to what goofy bullshit he gets up to.

edit: they're literally adding one poll at a time to the Vancouver count, media/campaign people at the HQs must be losing it.

Good news in BC, the NDP is finally repealing bills 29 and 94, the ones the BC Libs used in 2004 to gently caress up health care workers by privatizing housekeeping (and creating multiple serious disease outbreaks), flipping contracts in res care homes (effectively firing all the workers rather than negotiating a contract), rolling back wages 15% and much more. They were awful laws and I’m glad they’re about to be dead.

I don’t know if the exact reason was known before now, but apparently BC’s big money laundering case fell apart because the Crown leaked one of their own informants’ names. That was over a billion a year running through the casinos under Christy, and law enforcement blew the entire thing before the trial even started. Another sterling performance by BC slaw enforcement.

I also would like to give a shout out to the Green voters, who appear to have gone hard for the NDP as green support collapsed. Thanks Greens, for making Andrew Wilkinson eat poo poo.

I feel like mass turnover in the Liberal party actually helps them, especially if the turnover is mostly veteran MLAs who were around for all of their last reign. Christy lost a lot of people in 2013 (like Kevin Falcon, or that guy who mysteriously got his old managerial job back at ICBC whose name I don't remember but he was a dipshit) and it seemed to freshen the party up a little, put the new leader's stamp on it. Now in this case, Andrew Wilkinson IS one of those old MLAs, so that's a problem. But combine a bunch of new, younger candidates with his current "we're going to be incredibly transparent about everything we do starting... right now" push might work for him, especially if the media decides to agree that all the Liberal scandals aren't the fault of this sexy new BC Liberal party that probably doesn't talk to Rich Coleman much anymore, as far as you know.

Awful news for the NDP, because BC is their base of support now and Skeena isn't a guaranteed hold if Cullen's not running there. Murray Rankin's not running in Victoria either, and that's an easier seat to hold (unless the Greens run hard and the NDP puts up a weak candidate). It's not encouraging if the five or six safe MPs Jagmeet has left don't want to run anymore.
