They have it all wrong. It goes like this > = Positive response v = Negative response < = Neutral/ambivalent response ^ = Inquisitive response (not enough to change the subject of discussion, but enough to get a bit more information)

The writers of Alpha Protocol kept in mind the "three JBs" when giving the player conversation options - James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne - ie, a suave response, an aggressive response, and a professional response, that can be chosen in any order at different points in the conversation. Similarly, in my own conversational life hack, I can change the topic to Car Crash, Need for Speed, or even McDonalds Drive Through, simply by saying the topic in a loud voice with a raised intonation on the last syllable
