I got the latest version of FM having not played since about 2014, and even then I'm doing better now than I was then. I'm with the lowest league in England, Something North. In my first season I made the playoffs, I'm on course for promotion this year if I can get past the new year slump. However I'm having difficulties with team building.

I bought in a load of young player free agents and wanted to build them up. Now I'm caught between them all pulling at me. If they're any good they demand first team football, and when they don't get it they want to be sold. If I want to keep and they're any good they demand a huge amount after getting some first team starts, but I feel I have to give good young players first team starts as otherwise they won't develop in a semi-pro team at the lowest level. They're not full time, so they won't train as much. And because we're the lowest league it means no-one wants to take my lower ability guys on a loan to develop them, and then, even if they're an ok starter for me and want to be sold literally no-one is buying. The combined transfer spend for my league was all teams in total earning €10k or so between them.

I'd like to build the team up, especially with young players I found, but between no-one loaning them, no-one buying them to fund me, not being able to develop their attributes fast enough, and the inability for me to develop them myself without them all getting pissy I'm a bit stumped.

I enjoy the experience. Especially how having a solid tactic can get you good wins against better teams in the league who have much better players.

And it's not so much that other teams are buying my players, it's that my players want contracts far beyond what I can afford and even what they deserve. If bigger teams wanted my players at least I might have money from their sale to secure players at a good wage. The other thing I'd like is the ability to offer longer contracts. At the moment I can only get a season and a half guaranteed for a player at their wage because it seems the board won't let me sign anyone for longer. I've had to give short contracts to some players knowing in a year they'll want bigger contracts. I'm going to hold out to the end of the season for a few rotation/backup players with good potential and see if the one month between when the season ends and their contract ends allows me to sign them for two years instead of one.

The big thing is selling players. If there anyone was willing to buy I'd at least have some cash (although my FA cup run did me good with some TV money before the big teams entered.) The one time a team a few leagues up showed any interest in a player I whacked an asking price of four times his 12k value on him and they dropping their interest without even offering me anything, which was a mistake by me. But I learned.

I won promotion to the Vanarama National League with good tactics getting me wins against better teams. Now, even with good tactics my players are so far behind in ability they can't perform against even better teams. Comparing stats between me and them even the best players I got in to become key players for my team are worse than the squad players on the other teams.

Our goal is to avoid relegation but with now wins in five games, plus having a horrific schedule in terms of playing against the best teams all in a row I've a feeling I'm going to get fired. gently caress promotion.

Are there any decent guides for messing around with the editor and saves? Even changing the priorities managers give to things? I'm guessing it's a black box that involves a whole load of dark magic, but I figured I'd take a look if I could.

I'm still on 18 as I don't want to abandon my save, but I'm wondering if there's a way to tell how to change up your tactics and squad rotation dependent on the upcoming team. I'm using a sunday league's no nonsense first 442 mostly, and doing extremely well with hoofing the ball up, along with a 4-5-1 and a 4-2-3-1. I usually stick with the defensive 442 but sometimes it'll fall on its arse and other times it'll work wonders. Once the season develops a little I start to rely on where on the table my opponents are, their recent form, and whether I'm away from home or not. A big aspect of it for me is when to rotate players. I've definitely reloaded saves after I get an idea of what I'm up against, and the swings are huge. Going from losing 4-1 to winning 2-1. That doesn't seem to be just the RNG but sometimes even the small changes I've made in the tactics, like changing just three players in the starting line up.

While I've definitely save-scummed to success (getting promoted way beyond my ability, my team's ability, and my club's reputation so now I can't sign players.) I'd be far more inclined to stick with results if I didn't go from a series of three wins two draws, convincing wins and well fought draws, to losing 4-1 to a mid-table team. Reloading is a pain in the arse, but when I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong and what I should be doing based on reading the stats I'm not too bothered about that. Basically I'm wondering when do I go more conservative, when do I rest/rotate players, why does a defensive tactic win out at home against a team 10 places below me but an attacking tactic will be the third placed team away from home?

At least this season reloading won't make any difference. I've gone from VNL-North to League two in five years. No-one will sign for me. And I'm about to get roundly trounced. My karmic reward for playing god.

Does age/experience/experience at the right level play an important part in how well a player will play? Say you have two players, both with the exact same stats, except one is a player aged 27 with 200 matches at the league's level under their belt, and the other is aged 18/19/20 with only a couple of dozen matches played. Will the engine take into account that one player is older (and wiser), more experienced, more settled, etc. and increase their ability to perform well in a game? I have some ok players, but they're mostly young and it's for their potential I have them (which does seem to be good.) They're hovering around the same stats as my older players but they're performing less well. I know the hidden stats play a part, but I'm wondering if the age thing also plays a part, whereby simply giving them experience will make them more solid in games?

SI have announced some of the features they've added for this year. https://twitter.com/FootballManager/status/1174673867832549377

Miles Jacobsen has been saying the main thrust of their improvements is for long career managers, so things like setting out multi-season plans and ambitions, how to manage developing players better and how to course the individual player's career better. I don't really see any of these as likely to fall down at their first implementation. The one that's likely to have issues is the "improved" back room staff: stuff like suggesting teams. rear end Mans are useless, so now they can be useless in suggesting the line up for the team. There's also improvements to the player 3D models, the manager model and stadiums.

These mostly seem like decent changes to me, subtle nudges in the game in the direction it was going already rather than massive features. I might be tempted to get it and try my edited database sugar daddy no drinking team again (I can move players from lower-ish leagues to my team, but only if they're not old enough to drink.) Then it's a case of developing them as you rise through the leagues. I'm trying it in a FM18 save and it's the personalities all demanding different stuff that's causing the problems.

I didn't get FM19, and it was probably changed there, but the interface that comes to your inbox for playing your first team squad in underage matches is a big bad change. I liked being able to see who I had selected for my next match, and then make anyone who needed match sharpness available to the reserves. The new way doesn't seem to show that, and what it does show (via extra clicks to even see your players) isn't what's needed.

I've started with a team in the first division of Ireland, from near enough to me. They're predicted to come last in a division you can't be relegated from. The board expects us to come last. The board's biggest concern is the morale of the team, the bleeding hearts.

I will say, coming from FM18, they seem to have done quite well in making poo poo teams play more believably poo poo. It feels less like the match engine throwing in unbelievable mistakes amidst decent play (like chess computers playing perfectly but making two or three huge blunders as a sop to its supposed human level.) I actually believe this is a team of wastemen who couldn't kick a candy cigarette habit. This could be the match engine just being awful (including at higher levels) but to me it seems bad teams play badly in a believable manner when looking at people streaming quality teams playing well. Of course the team play puke football isn't making me too enthusiastic about the save (especially with there seeming to be no way to progress the team,) but I'll tough it out.

Coming from FM18 and after playing for seven or so hours at this point, I'm not so sure on the purple skin from a UX perspective. Seeing it on streams I thought I'd like it, but using it it all feels more cramped and claustrophobic. Everything feels less like a slick interface to get you to where you need and more like a stylised product designed to look nice. I feel similar about the switch from FM18s (brought in in FM19s) training interface. It looks more intricate and detailed than what went before, but the actual difference is more in appearance (to bad effect) than it is in any significant change.

I might try switching to the light skin about my first problem. Maybe I'm just not enthused managing a club that has no real prospect for growth in the game, but I definitely feel like the enjoyment is less in actually using the interfaces of the game.

I really like the training module and genuinely enjoy having to lay out the timetable. It's much better than the old system which I can barely remember but was focused more on the individual interaction rather than planning around the group and units.

If you use it properly and specialise training around a particular group of attributes (tactical possession ftw) you can have noticeable effect on the development of your players. On autopilot my assistant produced significant physical attribute increases in young players over 12-18 months in my first career when I wasn't too sure about the system. When I later did it myself I produced some footballers instead.

The dev centre "feature" is a huge disappointment by comparison. We get nothing new, and useful information is now buried under laggy menus and misleading summaries. Complaints were met with "Why are extra clicks a bad thing? Apart from that what's so bad about it?"

The training module might be that I just haven't had time to dig into it (and I don't have the players that inspire me to dig into it.) The complaint about the purple skin is less defined for me. Some things haven't changed apart from the colour, with regards to clicks, but the colour of it, as an aesthetic feeling, just makes everything seem oppressive and less like a menu driven system at my fingertips and more like something I have to contend with. Like I said, I'll try changing to a lighter skin.

Those idiots they had streaming were using some real clowncar tactics. Glad Miles stepped in to sort it out (or try to).

I've watched maybe an hour of that stream, and it does make me think that FM is a tough game to stream/video well. A lot of people focus on winning matches and showing match highlights, which is somewhat sensible, there's some visual action and heart-in-mouths moments. But the actual game of FM is mostly outside that area. It's talking yourself over decisions that could have a big effect, it's trawling through potential signings, it's wondering why your decent stats striker is missing everything, and these things don't make for an interesting stream unless you're able to put into real terms what you're going through.

On the FM21 side, it seems to be making things a little better in areas I like and previously felt were lacking, especially with bad staff and in crappier leagues. Better usage of analysis, changes to scouting, being able to read press conferences a little more easily (with more feedback on what you do,) and streamlining the mere possibility of someone playing for your lovely club. They might be small changes, they might be big changes that involve a lot of work under the surface, I don't know, but that's what FM releases are these days. There rarely seems to be a headline change that "revolutionises" the game.

Separate to my last my post, how many of you play with Attribute Masking on? Forcing you to do actual scouting before you sign a player unknown to you? Ever since I started reading the LLM forums a decade+ ago I've done it that way. It just seems more reasonable that I won't have a clue about most of the players (although that doesn't reflect the top leagues where there's far more media presence and cultural awareness around players, but I usually start low down.)

I agree with this, the matches look great and the engine feels great. And my feeling watching the previews and announcements is that this is an unofficial "Lower League" game update. I think the guys who manage Liverpool straight away will get some of the benefits from stuff that's more streamlined, but playing in lower leagues will mean you'll have to really be on the ball with what you're doing tactically. The game will just be plain more difficult. The upside is the changes they've talked about making to defense and midfield play is that you'll better see a reflection of the tactics you're employing. I already watched one friendly and already saw a few things I had to change.

If you're a Liverpool or Man City player you'll be able to spend money and plough through teams as usual. If you're playing with smaller and lower league teams you'll really have to watch what's happening in the game. This is a difficulty boost version, but it's actually giving you the tools to respond.

I wasn't thinking of the AI manager's incapability when it comes to managing the long term, season long game.

I've watched my second match, extended highlights, and it was actually enjoyable to watch, and that's never something I thought I'd say about this game. Mar 14, 2012
A little over halfway through my first season with Sheffield Wednesday I'm getting tired of the save. The goal the board set was to "avoid relegation" which I'm doing pretty well. This was especially the case when they started with a six point deduction. Without that six point deduction I'd be in the final spot for the play offs. We were knocked out in the first game we had in the League Cup (my fault, I was still figuring out competitive tactics) and our third round FA Cup tie was against Liverpool, which we duly lost. Mid-table mediocrity is where we're probably going to end up, and that's just not that inspiring as a save.

I only ever planned on playing this save during the beta. When the full game launches the database will be updated to include Cork City's relegation to the Irish First Division, and my plan is to get them back to the premiership, and eventually to the group stages of Europe, further than they've ever been. I didn't start the Sheff Wed save with long term plans, and that might be my issue right now (along with no transfer budget, even though I was never transfer-crazy.) I dunno, languishing with not much to play for just doesn't hit my buttons. Especially with the board not being that impressed that I'm doing far better in the league than they could have dreamed of, and showing me absolutely no loving appreciation. And the games I play seem to be a crapshoot of whether my tactics will pay off, with no rhyme or reason to how it performs (i.e. the variation of tactics, and league position-teams I come up against don't seem to mean much.)

We were predicted to come second (which updated to first after the second transfer window was done) but I still feel this was a tactical domination!

(The competition winning screen/trophy presentation, spoilered in case you want to see it first in your own save.)

Next year will be the real test. Playing out my league winning season (I think I still have three games to go before it's fully over) I ended up playing third place in the division above me (that I'll be going to) twice, once in a quarter final and once in a final. We lost 1-0 and 2-1. I don't think my attacking 4-3-3 DM tactic is going to work against better players. I need a re-think, before next season, but I'm hesitant to go 4-4-2 hoofball, especially having to play a tactic dance with whether I use that or my 4-3-3 DM against a team based on their form, league position, home or away, and expected tactic. It seems like a recipe for disaster. All in all I just don't think my players are good enough to compete highly in the Irish Premiership, and this next season will have to be for building for the year after (presuming I get a budget.)

Mrenda
Mar 14, 2012
The Irish Premiership is a really nice division to manage in. Lax loan rules, but issues with getting full season loans from English teams. A reduction on scouting so you can't just go all over Europe to find those people. Obviously not part of Brexit so there's no or fewer issues with permits. Not a prestigious league so when you get there Europe will be a real challenge. And, most of all, if you're a mid-table team there's a real tactical battle with how you set your formation against similar teams, home and away, with resting players, and how you minimise/maximise against the league leaders who've money from Europe.

I started with Cork City in the First Division and went unbeaten in the league there (as they should do seeing as they were just relegated) and, now, in the premiership, it's a real back and forth with results and an interesting challenge. A highly recommended place to go if you're looking for an interesting Lower League (in stature) save but still want the ability to become a really impressive European team in the long run.

Mrenda

I'm finding it a real problem to attract players at the next level for Cork City, now. We can get guys in who are simple replacements for our guys, but the club's stature isn't high enough to really step up a level. And that means we're not able to compete with the guys in the top three spots of the league, even if we're clear of the bottom teams. Like I said, it's an interesting save, but I have a feeling it'll be a long and slow methodical build up rather than instant glory.

My desktop finally gave up the ghost so I started a new save on my eleven year old laptop while I wait for parts to arrive (fair play to SI for keeping FM running on pretty much anything.) I have to say FM is just not as engrossing if you have to be engrossed by it. Because the laptop is so underpowered I have to have every other program closed and FM running full screen on a less than 1080p resolution laptop screen, and not being able to shitpost and read discord/forums while the game is happening takes away a lot from the experience.

Sure, it'll only take ten seconds for the game to process something (although longer on the laptop) but when you're just sitting there doing nothing those few seconds are a real distraction compared to a proper system where you can be complaining to half a chat room that you always lose in penalties.

Also, I'm trying to cut down on my smoking and FM is not a benefit to that. It's the perfect game to chain smoke while drinking coffee like an Italian manager on the sidelines.

I'm not too sure what to make of the increase in team dynamics/relationships/team leader/social circle type demands. I'm fairly sure it's been increased in importance for FM21. I've bought guys, good stats, no issues with consistency or big games, quick to gain tactical familiarity, but it could take a whole season or off season with the team before they're performing as their ability should indicate.

On top of that, I keep getting cupset. My brother maintains that the AI punishes you for resting players, and it's just not something you should do for cups, but I get the feeling that the familiarity of the players with each other, and the regular starting team are all just more of a cohesive unit.

It makes constantly improving your team quite difficult, because even if you've brought in better players, the team's form will dip against their better stats because of social issues, so you have to wait for them to bed down, then you bring in more players, and it's back to the start. (And yes, I run "Team Bonding" most weeks.)

Have any of you started up on the FM22 beta? If so, any positive/negative impressions so far?

I just played a few friendlies after it was downloaded and before bed last night. First off, I got some weird interface juddering/stalling at the very beginning, but that could be because I hit apply to all 57 open job positions. It lasted about a minute or two of clicking about. The match engine definitely looks a little better, I've noticed some nice touches and control from my (crappy) players. The issue with the female created manager having her face be warped after you leave the editor seems to be sorted. The new interactions in the press conferences and team meetings are nice, and the questions seem to be more tailored, although I'm sure, as always, with a limited amount they'll get old eventually. The weekly staff meeting where your staff give you updates seems to be actually decent, even if I know it's not going to be for everyone. It takes you to parts of the game that are easily ignored if you don't allocate time for doing the "small" stuff and brings it right in front of you. The match engine also seems to simulate players being crap/tired a lot better. It doesn't feel as RNG/silly when they make mistakes but rather makes a little more sense based on what you've seen. I played one 0 - 0 draw, despite having a lot of shots, and I wasn't calling "bullshit!" Overall, for the graphics, if you've watched streams the detail you notice, or rather don't notice when it's not your team you're in charge of doesn't do justice to small touches in the match engine graphics.

Also, I don't know if it's just a change in how it's presented, but they seem to have really emphasized stamina and stamina management. They talked about those changes last year, so it could just be that they've found a better way of presenting it, but halfway through a short pre-season I'm worried that the trick of packing in friendlies to bring up team cohesion and match sharpness might not work out long term. It definitely feels like this is a year of stamina importance much like it took them a few years to really get the team cohesion/dynamics stuff to be really important, although stamina is presented in a much more accessible way.

All in all, everything, much like the match engine, feels smooth and has a good flow. I'll have to play a lot more to get an idea of how good it actually is. For anyone who's not into the "feel" of the manager simulation I don't think it's an immediate buy, at least not before the November 9th full release shows how the game will be long term. At this stage, from a quick look, it feels quite polished, and like it was a release about polishing things up and presenting things better rather than the massive underling match engine improvement from last year, apart from what I'm seeing with stamina. However, don't underestimate that. It looks like they've done a very good job on it. If you play a lot of FM I think this probably is worth buying, especially with the build-a-nation change. If you just dabble with FM wait for Gamepass.

It's literally identical to FM21. Play 6-8 friendlies with a high intensity tactic, match preview & review every game (always hire a performance analyst), team bonding and teamwork sessions every week.

You won't gain any meaningful amount of fatigue in a short preseason. The tooltips even say fatigue in preseason is good long-term (never believe their lies, though). Just keep an eye on minutes and distance run during periods of heavy fixture congestion, and don't do 'extra' training every day. Rest is one of the most important sessions to schedule.

Could be this is a semi-pro team, which I haven't managed in a long time. So not only are they not able to train/recover enough, they're also useless.

I think if you don't leave any training time at all between games it's harder to gain sharpness, so being semi-pro may well make things harder/slower. I haven't managed below professional level in years. Maybe a Welsh Prem save this year.

Yeah, I think it was a match sharpness thing. Once I got them up a bit they're lasting most of a match, when it was pre-season, and when someone comes into the team from a low status, they're lucky to make it to the second half. Sometimes, however, all the players are absolutely shagged by the end of the match, and there's nothing telling me why. The last time it happened I was playing a five-at-the-back team so I think my team were just trying so much to break them down.

I'm managing in the Welsh Prem for my save. Cefn Druids, as I think the season starts with them without a manager. They're refusing to let me get my badges so my hopes of getting out of here as quickly as possible might not work out. It does help a little that I don't particularly care about them other than getting a better job.
