when my dad and my uncle were in grade school, one of their aunts came to visit. my uncle had warts on his hands, and their aunt offered to buy them. he apparently thought this was as stupid an idea as everybody else did, but agreed to it. she gave him five bucks, which was a veritable fortune in those days, and after a couple weeks, the warts went away. an interesting psychological trick. or coincidence. or a bullshit story.

SyNack Sassimov posted:Deprecated. Depreciated is what happened to OnlyFans' imaginary stock price this week. Deprecated is when someone decides something is no longer desired or approved of. As in, I deprecated your mom last week. both are correct... depreciate can also mean belittle or decry. odd related side note: "self-deprecating" is actually supposed to be "self-depreciating" , but it was overcorrected similarly. but but it's what Garner calls a "skunked term": we're stuck with it, much as we are with someone's mom

SyNack Sassimov posted:Ehhhhhh....the belittle definition is more because of misuse. https://www.dailywritingtips.com/depreciate-vs-deprecate/ Same reason "literally" now is used as "figuratively". the article says the opposite of what you're saying above, though... deprecate has only since the md-20th started to take over the belittle meaning, and depreciate was used more frequently in that sense until about 80 years ago, much like someone's mom. if you're relying on etymology, deprecating literally means praying against.
