The nuclear powerplants in Belgium had their lifespans extended by at least 10 years. The green party in Belgium called it one of the darkest days for the environment because of it.

Nuclear is evil. Nuclear is Satan. Everything else is nice and clean because someone else calls it green.

Trabisnikof posted:Or bio-sequestration will likely need GMOs to be effective enough by the time we get our act together. Although a lot of people think we still shouldn't be talking about geoengineering. People complaining about GMO's in general need to do some serious fact checking by taking a good look at food production over the last 50 years. Is it all good? Of course not, nothing is. But the amount of good GMO's have done cannot be denied. If it weren't for them, we'd be facing really big problems already. All this blind GMO hate seems to originate from the same branch of environmental activism that is less and less about science and facts and more about gaia/mother earth crap. Shayu posted:I have thought of best way to stop Global Warming. We must all together give up our luxuries, no more use our cars or buy new one. We must destroy our computer, the cellphone, our air conditioning. We will need to give up our meats. This will end Global Warming because we will return to the ways of life more in-line with natures. Getting rid of all meats means we should also get rid of many imported vegetables and fruits. We'll have to increase the amount of arable land quite significantly and be ready to deal with increased soil exhaustion and drought. No longer using cars means food distribution will get a severe hit, with most likely too many wasted crops in area's with much arable land and severe lack of food in area's without. For the area's that aren't able to produce varied crops in order to make sure their population gets the required nutrients, supplements need to be provided. All of this will also have, without question, a large impact on the availability of products derived from animals. Batham fucked around with this message at 13:28 on Jan 5, 2016 |

khwarezm posted:I don't understand why we would assume that it would assist the denialists to go from 'its not happening' to 'its happening and we're all completely hosed'. The most obvious position is to just say 'Ah well its happening but its not that big a deal, we won't really have to change our institutions or way of life particularly dramatically particularly if that means we'll have to be held accountable, heck some of the effects might be positive', if anything exactly what you're saying would line up well enough with the direction denialists are shifting to, an emphasis on technological solutions, adaption as it happens and much vaunted 'green Capitalism' that doesn't undermine the current system, that's not a denunciation of what you're saying by the way just an observation. So... according to you if you're not a defeatist you're a 'denialists'. Okay.

Rime posted:60 years after the wright brothers, we had the A-12 Blackbird. We're coming up on 49 years since Apollo 11 and we're...desperately reverse engineering the Saturn V engines because our lifting capacity is trash. The only reliable manned transport is hitching rides on Soyuz rockets out of a decrepit and half-abandoned facility in Kazakhstan. We have one crazy millionaire doing research on reusable rocketry. The collective The lack in advances in lift capacity is simple to explain to due a) a shift in focus for space missions, b) little commercial and military gain in going to space (in a military sense, going beyond current capacities). The latter has been changing as of late, already resulting in some neat new advances. What you said is almost the same as saying that not much has changed about cars the last 50 years because they still use 4 wheels to move around. Colonizing other planets is more and more deemed unrealistic and relegated to the realms of sci-fi by many scientists. A space station is a closed and controlled environment that is far more safe to live on than any planet (including Earth itself). At most you'd see mining colonies on other planets, heavily automated with little to no human presence. No need to adjust to gravity, terraform (or adapt to) the environment, adapt to extra-terrestrial lifeforms, ect.... . The biggest hurdles at the moment are: a) getting the material in space without bankrupting the planet, and b)better (cheaper) radiation shielding. The future of space colonization is probably very dull, boring and without planet colonization. Batham fucked around with this message at 13:02 on Jul 27, 2016 |

And how would you amend the current situation? This mass sterilization or extermination of mankind seems like some kind of short sighted fetish that won't actually solve the current situation apart from (maybe?) slowing it down.

If you don't live in India, China or North Africa, you'll very likely have little discomfort at most in your life. China already has massive population issues that are only going to get worse, India is already facing severe droughts (mainly due to piss poor management and planning) and North Africa is all kinds of hosed up already.

Also, don't start with learning modern front-end web development. It's a steaming pile of poo poo at the moment with the next best implementation of javascript being released every next day, ontop of being overwhelming for new programmers. Stick to Java or C#.
