What a waste of tax payers dollars losing pilots like that. Maybe some senator or congressmen might "care".
Hell, contact Miley Cyrus, lol.

I work in a Navy IS unit and on a whole there is very little complaining about the rate which is unusual in itself.

At work me and my co-workers ended up talking about registering for the draft and as conversations tend to drift, we were talking about maximum age for enrolling and seeing how we were both eligible for Air National Guard, I checked the job opportunities at our local base (Selfridge in Michigan, home of the 127th wing) AND... I saw a few I was interested in (aircraft maintenance and service mostly).

How bad of an idea is this? Along the lines of "You're stupid for even thinking this is an idea"?

38, 4-year IT degree but generally unhappy with my career path.

I'm a 38 year old Navy Reservist who only joined up last year.

First thing, I heard the wait list for Air Force is pretty lengthy, you may age out. Otherwise I dont know about the Air Force.

Would I do it again? Yes, it was a nice little break from life and watching the kids do amazingly stupid stuff is fun until you realize this is our armed forces. The Navy Reserves is a real mess to navigate if you have not had prior service.

So I can go to MEPS, pass all the qualifications, get to the job list, and walk away if I don't see anything I like? I was told that by the time you get to see the job list you're already past the point of no return.

Lol no. I held out for 3 hours before they offered what I actually wanted. I was willing to go home without signing but it didn't come to that.

Lol they will sit you in a chair and sweat you out but by the end of the day they are more motivated to get you a contract than send you home unsigned.

If you qualify for the job don't settle for anything else. They will horse-trade to get it for you behind the scene but try to get you to sign for something in the meantime to save them some phone-work.

I'm pretty sure you can go back. You may have to wait a month or go to different recruiter who doesn't think he's waisting his time on you though.

Navy basic made me fat because it's made for teens and not old men.

Eat at a buffet then no exercise for you! Seriously we ran like 4 times. Shivering while marching in the cold was the most strenuous exercise I did.

See if the base has cabins/bungalows. It's the off season and you may be able to get a cottage for cheaper than an actual extended stay.
This worked for me at Dam Neck at least.

Is Airbnb an option?

Over 139 days and it triggers a PCS you have no control over (nor the NOSC)and you get hosed.
My NOSC highly discouraged me taking orders over 139 days to prevent money gently caress ups.
