I'll be calling my recruiter later today to discuss ASVAB / PICAT testing. I want to push through as much of the process as possible, disqualification or not. But I'd rather not get disqualified, ya know?

Do you have medical records proving you are an adderal junky and not just spinning crazy tales from some booze filled dream?

Are those really my only options? By all measures I'm an ideal candidate, with a pretty stellar track record to back it up (advanced classes all throughout schooling, letter of recommendation from elected officials, etc.), so it doesn't really make sense to automatically disqualify me over something so trivial. But the recruiter also said that DODI trumps all of that stuff.

It was a legitimate prescription from a doctor in my primary care network, so I'm assuming there's a record. However, I didn't really need the meds, never got a refill, and ended up tossing the pills, so...

Gonna need a waiver for that dopefiend. Good luck. If war breaks out they may allow you to enlist undesignated in the navy but with your dangerous history of unstable mental illness and drug use it’s unlikely.

It’s utter bullshit but someone got a real hard on for people who actually tried to address their issues with AD

Not even close. Hell, the crab man was 37(?) when he joined the Navy Reserve.

My question to everyone interested in joining is "What do you want to do afterwards?" If the military is the best way to get there, so be it...but that's rarely the case.

Yeah and honestly it's worked out for me so far 5 years later. However I didnt have no higher aspirations than boy scouts with pay, a break from my normal routine and health insurance not connected to my main job. My AT's have been a joke, my school was fun and some long term orders I picked up were ridiculously lucrative (hell I even got sent to Fleet Week NYC). There's been some stress but nothing I couldnt ultimately handle. It's time to pay the piper though and I'm being mobilized for almost a year to a ship. A USNS ship in the Mediterranean. OH NOOOOOOOOOooooooooo..... lol

I'll add that the hardest part of being in has been seeing multiple female sailors I worked with leave the service for rape or sexual assaults. These girls are young enough to be my daughters and I even warned one before she left for boot camp. It still eats me up I couldnt help them.

Ok just because I feel like there should be one positive person here I'll be that guy.

I joined the Navy reserves in 2014 because I really needed to change careers. I was 37 and a complete anomaly. I went in the recruiters in June and in November I started boot camp. 2 months later I was in Pensacola as an Information system Technician trainee for 6 months. Joined my reserve unit and started drilling every month from June 2015

2016 Drilled monthly. 2 weeks in Hawaii around april. Volunteered for a class in Virginia Beach that went from July to December.

2017 I just did my monthly drill and 2 weeks a year (in Hawaii oh it was awful).

2018 I found out about some orders in D.C. and volunteered from April to October. I had also volunteered for a week long class in Texas. I think I drilled like 4 times that year. Did my two weeks in Hawaii again.

2019 I just did my monthly drills and 2 weeks a year (in Tacoma this time. it was actually awful)

2020...... I volunteered to mobilize for the year. I'm sitting on a ship dodging the plague not exactly having the time of my life but it could be worse I could be in the desert or something I don't know.

2021 I wont have to drill more than like once until October. I may have to do my AT during OCT to DEC. Who knows.

2022 My contract is up June 2022. I'll have to do my AT if I didn't do it in 2021. Monthly drills until June.

So something to take away from all this is I did a lot of poo poo I didn't have to do because I got itchy feet and like traveling. Also some of my experiences were way beyond the norm because of luck/proactive. In 2019 I was about halfway up the list for being mobilized against my will. Up like 1/20th from the year before. A lot of people volunteer to be able to pick their poison.

So all this did land me a much better paying job due to my clearance but I work in physical infrastructure not no fancy coding.

Drilling is super lame and a terrible way to spend a weekend but some units do "flex drilling" and only meet once or twice a quarter.

Would I do it again? Yes. I'm better now than I was before. Being old kind of sucks for the first couple years in but after 5 years I'm E6 and blend in pretty well with E6 reservists.

Well, the replies on this page have given me some second thoughts, but I have also recently been searching for a change and started considering the national guard.

I am 31, college dropout, poo poo for resume, working basically a dead end job and need more money to support my family. Its basically either this or a second job stocking shelves. Ideally I would like to get into IT work if I could score high enough on the asvab. I took it back in high school while in jrotc, scored well, I'm sure that means nothing though.

Would this be a viable way into a better career, while still earning money? Could I keep my full time job while doing so? I don't really trust a thing a recruiter tells me, so any real info would be appreciated.

Hi. I just responded to the above with my life story in the Navy Reserves.

I opted for IT but there’s some CT”?” choices that turn you into a military computer toucher too(except “I” that’s language). Also IS gets you a clearance but you’d better love power point.

So...

Yes. Yes. Absolutely don’t trust your recruiter but if you take your asvab and can get CT or IT you’ll be alright.

This may all be moot, as I just made it to a 3rd round interview with a company where the position starts at $120k. If that happens I would no longer consider the guard.

Lol yeah this isn’t for you. Good luck though! You’ll be alright.

I put in a chit once to rent a car to visit Monte Cassino and it got denied due to the fact they didn’t approve me visiting a casino.

Nobody gives a gently caress about history in the modern military. We were docked all over the invasion zone of Sicily and Italy and nobody cared.

Have you tried reapplying? One of my good friends made it through on the first attempt, but from what I’ve heard from them a substantial amount of the new hires were on their second or third application. It might be worth a shot if it’s still something that interests you. I’m probably going to try again in a few years myself depending on where I end up.

Thankfully I think I’ve managed to avoid the NTC/JRTC rotations. I’m air defense so our equivalent was roving sands which, at least for now, is no longer a thing. The Patriot system has horrible nightmare qualification tables though where the entire battery becomes nondeployable if a single crew member fails, so it’s sort of an out of the frying pan into the fire situation in terms of getting stuck in the field forever.

He’s addicted to that PSNW green life now.

According to the Navy recruiter I spoke to, I have to be off ADHD meds for a year (as well as be un-diagnosed, which frankly shouldn't be that difficult since I asked my doc if we could try the meds) to be eligible, and I very recently stopped taking them, so I'm not sure I have a choice in the matter either way.

And, not that it's really much (if any) better, but I'm currently 36. I'll be 37 next year.

Uh…. Well I probably need them and I’m doing just fine after six years in.

That’s my plan. I hit E6 so I could just coast (baring getting separated for getting fat) for the next 14 years til I’m 57 however I’m going to make an effort for chief.

In short: You are plenty smart enough for the USAF. Have you thought about the Guard or Reserve?

I got a 98. :smug:
