Thanks to everyone for helping shape my view of self-care and disability benefits. I set a goal over the past year of getting all of the little things I'd been ignoring or dealing with looked at, documented, and treated. That set the groundwork for my initial self-filing of a BDD claim that got rated 60% off the bat and I think there is a lot of room to appeal on a few of the issues.

FYI if you are autistic and attempt to get your therapy and psychiatric care paid for with VA Community Care, consider just giving the gently caress up preemptively instead. My case just got closed, after having been opened up thanks to the support of AOC’s office. 20 providers, multiple orgs. There is nothing out there for you that isn’t paywalled for adults with autism. Anyway here’s your life tax, based on NYC prices at one of the best clinics there is for this poo poo. If I couldn’t get it done in NYC, I doubt you can do it elsewhere.

320 a hour (45m session) for a therapist, 600 for the psychiatrist. Depending on your luck with the VA, you may not need the latter.

1,880 a month, 1,280 on the weekly therapy visits alone. Also don’t go crazy because you can’t afford anything but grippy sock jail courtesy of a VA referral (that they’ll pay for). Make sure the next autistic vet knows this.

Oh and one more thing: don’t quote me or say poo poo about this post to me. I don’t even wanna hear a “that sucks bro.” No well wishes, no thoughts and prayers. Nothing. This is info on what the VA can do for autistic vets and my findings are “dick.” Dickbuttkiss.

I'm filling out the paperwork ahead of my medical examination for disability benefits, is there anything the group would recommend as do's and don'ts for filling out the paperwork regarding my injuries/symtpoms associated with them and the examination itself? There's a section for functional limitation or loss on my paperwork, how have you guys handled filling out that section? I definitely have impairment with injuries that, while not knocking me down every day, cause a bad time and screw things up on frequent basis and cause me to lose sleep. Is it a correct read that that sort of thing is for the impairment/loss section, versus thinking "I still have a limb therefore it is not impairment or loss"? I know these are walk the dog type questions but I want to ask the group here rather than searching around online, thank you.

Use a VSO to file on your behalf. You will send someone there your medical records than they'll come back with a list of things to claim and how you should write it up. Fill out the documentation the way that they tell you to and send it back to them so they can file it for you.

It is the former of your section. A loss of mobility, strength, sensation, dexterity, etc.

Just be aware that the physical examination will be primarily based on range of motion, pain (to my understanding) isn't a strong determining factor for disability of a limb. Hopefully you'll have a good personable examiner, mine was good and genuinely interested in my limitations and issues, and even though my physical examination has me still pretty good for range of motion and strength, that isn't always the case and they reflected that in their opinion for my evaluation.

About to change majors because I dropped calculus I and realized it was hella hard for a 39 year-old father of two who works part time in addition to 12 CH of college to pass. I was in STEM but now looking at business.

Where do I go first to change majors? Do I request it at the school first and then tell the VA? I thought I’d be able to go right in there and hit a drop down menu and say I’m changing my major, but I guess I was wrong since there’s a form. It was easy to change my school iirc, but now the form is even needed for that.

My advisor is also a STEM professor, so I’m not even sure who to email to get designated as pre-business.

Another one for the group, the VA sent me a letter threatening to yank my health benefits and cited my stock trading activity for 2022. They apparently treat the final sale of all stocks and bonds as income REGARDLESS of the initial purchase price. Long story short, I have not exceeded the income threshold, they're just pointing at one half of a transaction and treating that as income. Has anyone had to deal with this bullshit before? I know I can submit valid info that proves I did not exceed this amount from my 1040, 1099-B, etc. but it's the VA so the risk of them saying "gently caress you" is always there

edit: the VA takes the 1099-B and deletes everything except closing transactions then treats it as income, per the customer help rep lady I spoke with. the veteran is then responsible for sending their 1099-B and all other documents, which the IRS already has and the VA had access to, to prove that the figures in the letter are incorrect w/r/t income. I can't think of any good reason the VA would delete everything except closing transactions and treat it all as income, but I'm also not thinking through a lens of trying to kick vets off VA care

I feel a little sheepish along this, and realized it may be trivial compared to some of the other vet's needs and challenges right now. I know the VA has provided and grants to coversome disability gear and equipment k like for my car and house etc.). Would they also cover accessibility helping peripherals? Bottom line is I love j gaming and been a giant fan my whole life, and besides playingwith my kids and brothers, it's my escape and let's me just zone out and stop thinking and stressingabout my diagnosis/prognosis and treatment for at least a little bit and fight my depression and anger unfortunately my condition has finally progressed such thatI don't have control orfeeling of my left arm and leg. I'm going through OT and PT but, finally had to face reality that thatI can't playgames anymore because I can't just my left hand, or evengrip a controller, to say nothing of no control of buttons or sticks. On the more in depth side of things, my brother found a company (evil?) That makes custom controllers for disabled players specific to the disability and capabilities of the individual. Without going that far, I'm looking into some smaller quicker solutions like buying straps for everything they allow for over handed holding and adjustments, and while not exhorbantly expensive, could add up over multiple controllers is; there a way to get the VA to pay for some of this?Like I said earlier, I kind of hate to ask this since I'm sure there are still others with greater challenges and needs. And I have the walker and wheelchair and braces which were Nick more necessities, but if lot to see if there's a way to get back to the other things/hobby I enjoy

VA can be a bit stone-age and might be lacking in instruction for how to evaluate game peripherals, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I would think a 3rd-party charity like https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/programs would be all over this is if you called them. It's a modest request and bespoke controllers wouldn't be a fraction of the cost of a wheelchair lift or a prosthetic. If they don't directly buy you the stuff they would at least help you prepare a request to the VA and help your odds.

I have some injuries myself and you might also check out:

- Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, it has rear paddles which can move extra buttons to your right hand, and has built-in Windows 11 support to remap both buttons and keyboard keys to it

- Microsoft.com sells the Adaptive Controller which lets you plug all sorts of things into it like foot pedals and bite switches, which they also sell, and have a dedicated support number for

- Tobii makes an eye-tracker for Windows which lets you move a mouse cursor to where you're looking at, or click with winking/blinking. For me it was tiring to use exclusively, but helpful to use it in combination with half a controller for Diablo-style games

I believe Microsoft actually worked with the VA on making their adaptive controller. If Xbox isn't your thing, Sony also has their own thing going on called the Access Controller that dropped recently. I don't know much about how they work exactly but they are supposed to be highly customizable.

Like Zero said the VA might not be too much help, still try them I think. Worst they can say is no. WWP, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and maybe even IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) could be helpful. You might even try some local regional vet organizations. They tend have more of the younger vets (versus stuff like the VFW) so they will actually understand your plight. Like I am in NJ and there is a group called Warrior Strong that operates in the NJ/PA area. Maybe see if there is a veterans center in your area to find out what groups are in your area?

And you should absolutely be able to live your life to the fullest and that includes being able to tell COD pubbies that you hosed their mom. Seriously though, you know what I mean.

So I tore my knee up in the military about 20 years ago and about 2 years ago have been deemed 30%.

I've had two knee surgeries since then, but none in 15 years and with always having private healthcare I was a dummie and never bothered.

On Xmas eve my knee gave out and I ended up on the floor milliseconds. Since I now have a claim for my knee I figured it was time for the VA to check it out and applied for care.

I was very surprised at the care and how much better it was them my huge megacorp healthcare provider. I'm thinking about moving all my primary stuff over but I'm unsure how the billing works with non-military injury stuff. Does the VA bill your current health insurance for unrelated injuries etc?

I'm priority group 2 if that means something.

I'm medically retired with a 70% VA disability rating. I live in the same city as a well-equipped VA clinic (but not hospital,) and have been using that clinic for the past two years without issue besides disliking my PCM. Is there any reason for me to also sign up for Tricare Select or my employer's health plan, which is only $12 a month?

I ask because I recently discovered I am still signed up for Tricare Select Overseas from the time I stayed in Germany after retiring. In DEERS, my ex wife is still listed as a dependent. I wanted to update both of those things, but apparently have to do it in person at an ID card office, of which there are two near me...but both are always closed and seemingly can't be booked online. I'll also need to update it again when I get married in April and change my last name.

If you get "real" health insurance there's a couple perks, one is that you can get prescribed new stuff like Wegovy without an act of congress, and the other is that on the off chance you're injured (like car accident), I don't think the normal insurance puts a lien on the damages you sue for. Whereas if the VA gives you $10000 in treatment and xrays for the car accident, you'll never "owe" it to them unless you sue and get an award, then they'll recover that amount out of it and you'll get little or nothing.

edit: Oh, does Tricare have dental? I haven't seen a dentist since my job laid my off, that might be something to consider

Hahahaha getting Wegovy on TRICare.

Lol

No.

You might be able to get on Ozempic if you’ve got Type 2 Brimleys.

Semaglutide for weightloss is non formulary. Hell semaglutide is non formulary period. There’s diabetes drugs other than Ozempic that TRIcare wants your doctor to try. You can get Ozempic but your starting metformin and “diet and lifestyle” change first if you’ve got type 2 almost every time.

I have no idea what the VA’s rules on semaglutide are but I doubt they’re better than TRIcare. But it wouldn’t shock me if they were.

It was easier for me to eat better and work out than get in on government subsidized semaglutide through the channels available to me.

Always take the TRICare option, it’s great to have if you need it, and you can always use VA whenever too once your in their system. Meanwhile TRIcare has an enrollment season, and is dirt cheap; so use it.

Is Tricare cheaper than $12 a month? That's what my employer health care would cost due to being heavily subsidized by the university. Dental and vision are also free through the university so I don't have to worry about that.

I am happy with all the medications I get through the VA currently, with the exception of having to go to a specialist to get the 300mg version of Wellbutrin because my PCM wasn't comfortable prescribing more than 150mg...

The PACT Act says that granulomatus disease is now presumptive. I got an X-ray and a CT scan a couple years ago that found I have granulomatus disease. However, it isn't a disability, like I don't have any major breathing problems or anything, and it isn't getting worse. Just a bunch of nodules in my lungs. Does that qualify for a VA disability claim? If so, and they send me to a C&P, would it even be worth my time to go?

I am not a lawyer nor do I work for the VA. If I remember correctly a big thing with the PACT act was you had to have a presumptive exposure to burn pits or other toxic substances. Do you have something like that? (from https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits/)

quote:

If you served in any of these locations and time periods, we’ve determined that you had exposure to burn pits or other toxins. We call this having a presumption of exposure.

On or after September 11, 2001, in any of these locations:

Afghanistan
Djibouti
Egypt
Jordan
Lebanon
Syria
Uzbekistan
Yemen
The airspace above any of these locations
On or after August 2, 1990, in any of these locations:

Bahrain
Iraq
Kuwait
Oman
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Somalia
The United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The airspace above any of these locations

I think it would absolutely be worth it to go. I don't know if they would give you a percentage without some sort of symptoms but even a 0% means that they will take care of it (lol) if you end up requiring surgery or something later in life. And if it does become symptomatic (I don't know the disease, sorry) you can always get it bumped up. But there could be a set disability percentage tied to it, I don't know. Sorry, just my thoughts. Also tell them you have tinnitus because you have tinnitus.

fake edit: Quick google search of "granulomatous disease va rating" from some random blog says : Diagnostic code 6524 is used for granulomatous rhinitis, which is in the nasal cavity. It is rated at 100% for Wegner's granulomatosis or lethal midline granuloma, which are severe cases, and 20% for other types of granulomatous infections.
Could be an automatic 20%, add another 10% for tinnitus. And all the disabled bennies you can get like shopping at commissaries with a big ole beard or womanly equivalent.

No, I'm not rated. After the VA hosed me with overpayment (and then collections) on my GI Bill, I didn't want anything to do with them and haven't had anything to do with them in 15 years. Lots of success stories, esp for gip goons seeking grad school. I hear they'll pay for all sorts of stuff and sometimes maybe even after the fact if you make your case just right. I do know that the common wisdom is to never burn that last shred of GI Bill eligibility so you can keep that VRE in your back pocket.

I'm on VR&E right now. If you have the GI Bill while you're on VR&E you're paid a housing stipend at that higher rate. It rules if you're using it to go to college full blast like that, and I switched to it because my GI Bill would have expired before I finished it.

New problem this semester, my counselor told me during covid that I didn't need to worry about filing an extension for my Post 9/11 GI Bill because it was "paused" for as long as I am on VR&E. Come to find out, the entitlements are paused but the overall expiration date is not. Figure that one out.

So now, instead of getting like $3500 a month while I go full time, I get $500 because that's VR&E's rate. Surprise! The GI Bill hotline person said I can still plead an extension if I tally up all the covid and other hardships over the past that would have stalled my school attendance, but I really want to get my ducks in a row so I don't mess this up. This is the first time since I was 16 years old that I'm unemployed, so I can finally completely focus. They also said they heard of people getting 3000-day extensions so maybe if I just land on sympathetic ears I'll get help with it. It's weird they made the new GI Bill never expire but left the old one like this.

Anyway VR&E is cool when it works, it can be more powerful than the ordinary GI Bill because it uses the Bill's 100% Entitlement rate when you have some left. even if you didn't have 100% rate on the original Chap 33. But like, even if you have no way to get a GI Bill to boost it with, it's still free college or training.

The VR&E info is confusing as heck. If I've got like 5 months of post 9/11 left and use VR&E for professional school, how does that work? Am I able to use all 48 months of VR&E still? Do I take a hit on the housing allowance? My main goal is to get the "gently caress my life" tuition costs taken care of, any housing and additional stipends are just a bonus

I believe as long as you have any eligibility left on the GI bill, you can get the GI bill housing allowance rate. They've shifted how things work a few times, but iirc now VR&E and GI Bill pull from completely separate entitlement pools, so you essentially have 48m of VR&E and 48M of GI Bill, provided you qualify.

Signing up for classes also work a bit differently. For VR&E you have to be working towards a particular job that is currently hiring. All of your courses have to work towards that goal of getting gainful employment with the position you select. The GI Bill just has to be part of a degree plan. So it can kind of limit what courses you can take, but there are a few ways around those limitations.

VR&E is also much more expansive in the kinds of assistance it will provided. As a rehabilitation program it will purchase whatever kind of equipment you need as a result of your own personal ratings to make thing work. This can include customized vehicles, computers, etc etc. There is a separate requisition process for these items but I wouldn't hesitate to make a request if you have a genuine need.

I managed to attend College + Law school on a combination of GI Bill and VR&E benefits. There wasn't a huge difference between what the experience was like between using different programs. I still have about 6 months of GI Bill eligibility left, but I don't think I'll ever exhaust all of that even if wanted to.
