This really needs a slowdown treatment. Youtube settings lets it play at half speed but there are deeper screts to be found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjWUkjvnXb4

If this was a thirty-three-and-a-third RPM record played back at 16RPM, then that's roughly 48% of its original (or sort of original) speed. By downloading the Chipmunk tracks from youtube and using Audacity's "Change Speed" function set at 48%, I was able to get something that sounded identical. Also, for Walk Like an Egyptian, if you adjust it to 60% of its original speed, the singer sounds like an ordinary woman. I'm not sure I would say it's "better" that way, but it's interesting. EDIT: Call Me sounds even better at 52%. Samuelthebold fucked around with this message at 11:26 on Nov 12, 2015 |

OK, I'm seeing some strange results. Whoever made this soundcloud version probably didn't use a real 16RPM turntable. It appears that Diamond Dolls, for example, is playing at 48% original speed, while My Sharona is at 52%. So is Call Me. When I said I preferred Call Me at 52%, that's because I was comparing it to my own 48% version. EDIT: Heaven Is A Place On Earth is an even 50%. I can upload stuff if someone can recommend a host, and of course if it's cool with the mods. The quality may or may not be nicer, but At least there's no skip on My Sharona. The Chippette songs are honestly pretty bland if you speed them up enough that it sounds like a real person singing, though. Samuelthebold fucked around with this message at 09:29 on Nov 13, 2015 |

More info: (song - album - playback rate in the soundcloud upload) 1. Call Me - Chipmunk Punk - 52% 2. Walk Like An Egyptian - Born To Rock - 52% 3. Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Born to Rock - 52% 4. Diamond Dolls - Chipmunk Adventure (soundtrack?) - 48% 5. You Keep Me Hanging On - Born To Rock - 50% 6. My Sharona - Chipmunk Punk - 52% 7. Always On My Mind - Born To Rock - 50% 8. Refugee - Chipmunk Punk - 52% All the tracks from the "Born To Rock" album are only available on Youtube in crappy quality, so you're better off getting those from soundcloud unless you can find a higher quality source. All the others sound just as good/better via the youtube rips, but they're still overdriven. If you really want to get your gothic chipmunk on properly, we're going to need a higher quality source.

There's always http://www.amazon.com/s?rh=n%3A163856011%2Ck%3Aalvin+chipmunk%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A625150011 - looks like there are some compilations near the bottom of the old music. The speed (and possibly compression/eq/etc) editing might be derivative enough to claim fair use, but obviously ianal and since they're for sale as MP3s someone is actively claiming rights As far as actual old records, you might have some luck making a goon project thread in the music forum - there are bound to be collectors, and GBS isn't exactly known to be a non-cesspool

That Chipmunk Punk album was apparently rereleased on CD, but you could only get it through the Chipmunks website. Also, google says the CD was actually mastered with the overdrive in place. The vinyl might be the best quality still. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Chipmunk-Punk-The-Chipmunks/dp/B000WVZZNY I'd get it myself if I still lived in the states. It's from 1980, which reading wikipedia tells me is sort of a weird dead period in Chipmunk history. That's probably why you hear Alvin singing about "getting it up for the touch of the younger kind". Worth the $10, I'd say. The Chippette's Born To Rock album is from 1988, and came out on CD in 1990. It's probably in someone's mom's house. EDIT: Had a chance to listen with good headphones. The youtube versions just aren't as good. And I the CD version of Chipmunk Punk is definitely badly overdriven if the youtube version is any indication.
