Taffer posted:Uhhh, what? That is pretty much grounds to quit immediately unless there is serious context you're not sharing. No context that I know of. The team I'm in has a 'special exception' proxy that apparently lets us use SO (not the others though) so the first I heard about it was in a room full of a few hundred other developers complaining about it to one of our org's chief technology people; who hadn't any idea why it was blocked either.

I work from about 7:30am to about 4pm most days. The rest of my team doesn't show up until 10:30 at the earliest, but they usually don't head home until after 7. A few of them don't leave until closer to midnight. Some people have given me poo poo about leaving 'early' but I tell them to go pick up my kids then if they want me to work later, and that usually shuts them up. No one officially cares as long as I'm there between 7 and 7 and get stuff done. Mostly it's single coworkers complaining about all the extra 'flexibility' I get as someone with family commitments. Whatever. Also, four weeks minimum vacation, three bonus vacation days to cover the Christmas shut down period, two weeks paid sick leave, five extra days sick leave without evidence, plus I can bank up to a week's worth of time off if I work longer than 38 hours a week. Socialist Australia, baby.

"I don't understand why we can't just embed this Angular app in a frame inside [insert large React product]". I mean yeah technically I could do it, but have you considered gently caress you, no I won't.

bob dobbs is dead posted:I have never gotten paid less than 6 figures for a full time job computer touchin The silicon valley pay bubble doesn't make this true everywhere. Here in Socialist Kangarooland you're unlikely to hit six figgies until you hit a senior / executive position, at which point you're more likely to be a manager than slinging code. Unless you're on that contractor grift, then God bless and full steam ahead.

Welp, I'm now SAFE Agile Certified (lol no I didn't pay for it) mostly so I can continue arguing about it at work without the robots deflecting with 'well you just don't understand it'. Hmm, yes I love being the kind of agile that plans to only release to production 4 times a year, delicious.

prom candy posted:Does anyone have dead simple flow charting software (web based ideally) they like to use? I just want to draw out our new complicated onboarding flow and share it with my team We've been using the Mermaid integration in Gitlab's wikis (it also has a VSCode extension) to make a bunch of intra-team diagrams and it seems to be quick and easy. For anything more advanced, yEd?

As someone who works as part of that MPs portfolio, he means PI instead of sprints. We're a SAFE shop. Our sprints are a regular ten days, and our releases are on that rough 90 day cadence.

We only do video on for the last standup of the week. And even then we can only get about 7 of us going before the video and audio starts dropping out to the point of making it pointless. Otherwise we're all audio only, and usually only then if we have something smart rear end to say.

prom candy posted:Are you in management at least? Technically, I guess. My title at the moment is 'Technical Manager' which is the highest technical role in the org without having line management responsibilities, or before your technical aptitude and experience doesn't matter as much as your people management skills. For example, we have a Chief Software Engineer who's two levels above me, but they've never written a line of code in their life, or at least in the past few decades. I think our problem is more we're a government agency trying to do agile, but in a way that doesn't force everyone else in the org to go agile, while also being chronically understaffed, so everyone has to wear multiple hats. The cliches about public servants aren't all true, but there's definitely some people around here whose entire life is running down the clock until retirement.
