Finally manged to make a tiny bit of progress on my project only to be called into a status/planning/concerns meeting by my boss. Fully expected to be reprimanded for my seasonally affected sluggishness, but ended up being reprimanded for going to too far too fast.

I hate my current place of employment, but nobody but me is that upset that I have no motivation and do not deliver anything of value. Honestly, it feels like nobody else in this hulking org is doing any actual goddamn work either, and they're not going to start coming into the office and acting like a team just because I hate working on shifty apps that nobody cares about from home.

I should follow my own advice, referencing the thread title, but the market is still pretty bad, I have a contract for the rest of the year and I haven't been paid my bonus yet.

Outside of special circumstances, like when the bubble burst last year, the company I worked for pulled out of tech, the entire industry were firing people and I felt like I needed a safe place to weather the storm for a year, there's just no way I'm not taking the offer that pays best.

One of the other tech leads put together a technical test for the new hiring round and management got wind of it and has demanded all current devs take it.

One dev, who has been performing badly in general, had a full on panic attack in the middle of it because he thought it was a way to catch him out and is now off sick with anxiety.

Sounds like he's right.

Maybe the real career strategy isn't to fix what's broken or to cut costs, but rather to just endlessly bootstrap replacements from scratch and then hand off the components to other people so you can start on the next replacement to bootstrap.

You've just invented IT consulting.

I would prefer six hour workdays, compensation for the commute and no working from home for anyone. WFH makes an awful job slightly more bearable, but I would prefer to enjoy my job, and I can only do that by directly interacting with people. I hope workplaces stratify into all-WFH or no-WFH, because I respect that it works for some people, but it totally destroys the kind of team dynamic I like when people start dropping off the grid.

The problem with hybrid setups is that it has the downsides of both remote and in-office work: you still have to live somewhere you can commute from and maintain the means to commute, and have a home office; the company has to pay rent on an office, and manage distributed infrastructure and device management; and everybody spends half their time working the way they would prefer not to.

I agree, hybrid is kind of the worst of both worlds.

Nah, there's legit reasons for it too. Most people aren't made to sit in a room working for 8 hours straight every day; they need to socialize, and I mean engaging in actual communal behaviors, not just hitting the pub with friends every other weekend.

Motivation is a factor. Some people like being able to show off their work in person, or getting an actual pat on the back rather than a like on your slack message. Online work is convenient, but pretty dehumanizing.

I guess the straight from OpenAI stuff might be better. I wouldn't know; I closed my account once and they don't let you reopen it ever so I'd have to get a new phone number (Google Phone does not work) to open another one. However, the Bing GPT is absolute dogshit; it just repeats the summary of the top three search results your query would get. I can do that. Asking it to come up with something original so easily runs afoul of one of their many filters. I'm not even asking it to write porn. I told it to give me a witty summary of Das Kapital and it told me that jokes about political topics could offend someone. Sometimes it will write the answer to something completely innocuous, come across a naughty word in its own answer, and then delete the entire thing in front of your eyes.
