I am debating going on Centrelink while out of work because its coming up to a tricky season to find work and honestly I would rather be off work over xmas anyway. I have about 5 grand saved which I was hoping to use to pay for a sinus operation next year - is this going to affect my chance at receiving welfare payments? Im currently living off that money and while I dont mind doing so, I really need to get my loving sinus fixed.

Nien posted:I worked on a thing recently where there was the ultra high tedium job needing to be done. The Indian guy did it (and best I've seen that sort of job done) for $4,000. The lowest quote from a local was $47,700. You can't compete with this. Don't try. My old employer was doing this for a lot of software dev stuff. Rather than having contractors come in they would just outsource on e-lance for a fraction of the cost and if a guy wasnt working out or was doing a bad job then they just binned him and got someone else immediately. it basically turned the entire development team into project managers who delegated work to an invisible workforce. it sorta sucked tbh. totally killed the awesome collaborative vibe we had in the team. Apparently now that company is gutting basically every department except for the heads and outsourcing everything that is 'work' and when something needs to be 'created' its done by one of the skeleton staff left behind.

In Tokyo, those 'all you can eat/drink for 2hrs' places wont let you in if you're australian. I dont blame them, because Im sure theres a reason, but it would be nice if my passport somehow identified me as 'not a racist' so that I could enjoy something.

Monis is a fuckhead terrorist that deserved to die and we are better off without him. he had nothing of value to contribute to society. I agree that 'unleashed hell' is heavy handed, but not because of the measly death toll. Martin Bryant 'unleashed hell'. Man Monis unleashed 24 hour news coverage of a shop front.

Even a perfectly executed campaign tackling the issues that might cause kids to turn to drugs, you're still not gonna stop the ones who do it because it's fun. Throwing money at the issue to prevent hasn't worked. Just legalise it and sell it and turn drug prevention from a loss to a profit.

Besides the Air Force and other government operated aircraft for the politicians, there is zero publically owned airlines in Australia, correct? Wasnt Ansett the only one? Some arrogant fuckhead on facebook is arguing that public transport in Australia is hosed because their Jetstar flight is delayed by 2 hours. A number of people have told her that its a private company but apparently in her mind 'public transport' includes any form of transport the public has access to.

lol just lol if you live anywhere outside a 10km radius from the city of sydney and use a bike as a primary form of transport. it was never intended and should never be trusted unless you dont value you life.

If working full time in a 5 of 7 day roster, should penalty rates be applied to sundays?

Wheezle posted:Yes. There's more to a weekend for most people than just time spent not at work. Right. So the employer I am interviewing for telling me that they dont pay penalty rates for weekend work (but do for public holidays) is breaking the law?

freebooter posted:Not neccesarily. I've known some people on contracts where they don't get penalty rates because they get a higher base rate to compensate... so I guess that's legal. Without giving away too much, its a support related role for a very large international tech company who specialises in devices that just work. offering 40K, 5 of 7 roster. I dont really want to take the job because its significantly less than my previous one, but its work from home and I can at least do it until something better paying comes along.

posty posted:No way in hell would the company in question be on an enterprise bargaining agreement from the howard era exempting them from penalty rates. Thanks. Yeah I did work in HPs call centre and it was the same thing. I also worked for a now defunct mobile company that did the same thing. 5 of 7, no penalty rates except public holidays. I will look them up myself and investigate. I have other irons in the fire but given the time of year things are progressing slowly and so far it's the job I'm closest to getting, and even then it starts in mid February.

BCR posted:Don't know. With rostered work unless its explicitly mentioned in your contract, you generally get 1.5X for so many hours then 2X after that. How is this noted in the award? I should be able to ask the employer what award I am on, and then look it up on fair work and it'll say "$XX an hour plus YY to compensate for no penalty rates" ?
