I'd imagine that part of the reason that never got developed further is machining difficulty. Especially in the pre-CNC days. You can train a high schooler to put a piston in a lathe and run a boring head through a cylinder to great accuracy, but getting sub-thousandth tolerances in a shape like that would need a far higher level of skill and much more complicated machinery.
