This is great. I do wonder what they would do if given more creative freedom though. Baby Metal was a creation by the label, and I think their music is dictated pretty much completely. (someone else writes their guitar track for example)

Most likely end up as 'normal' J-pop idols.

Talking about idols and j-pop. I remember having read something some time ago about the abysmal treatment that Korean pop artists in those big girl / boy bands receive from their managers and their label. About how they barely receive any money at all, are forced to live together in horrendous apartments, how if one of them ever gets a lover they will be publicly shamed and kicked out of the group. Is there a similar thing in the J-pop idol industry?

Pretty sure that Jpop idols are strongly discouraged from having relationships, and the business side of that particular niche of music is said to be chock full of Yakuza and pedos! So not all that different from the idol industry anywhere else.

I think Kyary, for example, has a lot more creative input in her music than most K-pop idols do, but in the case of, like, Morning Musume or AKB48 there's probably not much difference in how they're treated. The main difference between J-pop and K-pop, to my mind, though, is that the independent (non-idol) pop scene is MUCH more substantial and prominent in Japan. There's a couple K-pop indie stars, but I can't name nearly as many.

Yep, and it's not just about female idols. The worst part of that case is that they have tremendous evidence against Kitagawa, but haven't done anything since he's rich and powerful. Not too different from America, but considering the scale of abuse the authorities are oddly nonchalant.

I recall a source saying that lots of modern Visual Kei band members are male escorts, too, but I forget where I read that.

Just want to let ya know that Fuki (of Light Bringer, Unlucky Morpheus, DOLL$BOXX) did a new album under the name "Fuki Commune". ISAO (of Spark7 and Cube-ray) and Nozomu Wakai on guitars, Atsushi Hasegawa (of Gerard and Sound Horizon) on bass, and Light Bringer's keyboardist. Great lineup, mostly awesome tunes.

Japanese psych rock is pretty dope. There's about a hundred bands related to AMT, Fushitsusha, Les Rallizes Denudes and Boredoms, and lots of them are pretty prolific. Your tolerance for them will depend on how much you enjoy AMT's noisy side though.

Definitely check out Tsurubami, they're basically an AMT side project that are so hazy and blown out that they resemble shoegaze at times. On the Boredoms side, Rovo and OOIOO are both awesome - the former is more electronic and trance-inducing, the latter are very diverse and often tribal. Angel'in Heavy Syrup and eX-Girl are also great.

Might as well go on and do a post since I had a list of stuff which I consider cool which hasn't been mentioned yet. Warning: this post is a clusterfuck of genres.

The Pillows are an alternative rock group formed in 89. As of 2016 they've released like 20 full albums and lord knows how many singles. Here's a few of their old songs/albums because I stopped following them in like 2004 or so and thus haven't heard their last decade-plus of albums. Either way it's solid stuff. Their vocalist, Sawao Yamanaka has a label (Delicious label) which I'm going to reference directly below.

Noodles are basically a three (formerly four) piece girl band that are on Delicious label, also have around two decades worth of stuff. They do shows with the Pillows a lot, as well as Yoko (the lead singer) and Sawao doing a lot of those one man live shows together. Anyways here's some of their old stuff. They have a lot of other great songs that you will never track down without buying their albums off like Yahoo! auctions but I can help if you get into them and have trouble finding stuff.

Totally unrelated:
Number Girl should have had more than a passing mention a couple of pages ago because they are very good and influenced a lot of later indies/post-rock/whatever groups. To quote Wikipedia: "Number Girl played fast, guitar-driven rock similar to the Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Hüsker Dü. ". Just hit these albums and see if you dig it or not. I know someone somewhere compared their sound to Mass of Fermenting Dregs and I can sort of see that in some places. If you click on one band in this post, it should be Number Girl.

If you liked Number Girl then check out Zazen Boys as well which is a side project of their vocalist/guitarist with a more math rock edge.

Other awesome stuff:
Guitar Wolf. You want awesome garage rock, you get awesome garage rock. This stuff rules. They managed to pump out two hokey sci-fi feature-length movies and you should totally check those out if you get the chance.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. Garage rock, self-described in an interview once as "motorcycle rock". Unsurprisingly, they have a bunch of songs about motorcycles. Pretty heavy and pretty awesome.

And to cap it off in the most Japanese way possible, you can't have a Japanese music thread without talking about enka, so here's some enka I legit like: Yoshi Ikuzo. Dude rules. Tsugari Heiya, Musume ni, Youta, Yukiguni. If you can get past the sometimes-heavy Aomoriben it's pretty great. Maegawa Kiyoshi is pretty good too.

Every instrument you can think of and then some gets a solo piece in this song. Some somewhat famous people have played in the orchestra; Coba, the accordionist, went on to play on a Bjork album, and Kazumi Watanabe, the second guitarist, played with YMO on their early tours and on the Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Hello, Japanese music thread! I've been really into Jun Togawa recently so I figured I'd share some of her stuff. Hers is a name you hear a lot when you like Japanese new wave and weirdo pop, but I never really looked into her until I heard her guest vocals on Vampilia's "The Divine Move." (Video is artsy-nsfw.)

Jun Togawa began performing in the 80s ostensibly as an idol singer, but she's never really fit that mould. Her vocal range spans from a childish idol voice to a proto-Shiina Ringo rasp to operatic exaggeration, often all in the same song; her lyrics display a cynicism and preoccupation with existential literature that don't really play in idol Peoria.

Her most famous song is probably "Suki Suki Daisuki," which has been covered several times. My favorite cover of it was recorded by BiSkaidan, a collaboration between anti-idol idol group BiS (who also appeared on "The Divine Move") and noise band Hijokaidan. Hijokaidan also recorded the song with Togawa herself, as Togawa Kaidan, incidentally.

She's also fronted several bands, including Yapoos and Guernica. Yapoos is anthemic 80s-style pop, very much in a Susumu Hirasawa vein (in fact he's collaborated with Yapoos/Togawa quite frequently - Here he is performing two of my favorite Yapoos songs with them). Guernica is Showa As gently caress retro pop that'll teach you a bunch of outdated kana.

Yeah Jun Togawa is very much something else. The music is great but I get the impression that having a good knowledge of Japanese culture and understanding the lyrics contributes greatly to understanding what she's all about. She's worked with both Hosono and Hirasawa, who are IMO The Twin Gods of Japanese synth music. Sad she hasn't been up to much the last 25 years or so.

If we're going to talk more about Hosono-produced early 80s pop, Miharu Koshi should be mentioned. Her early output is New Wave, but with heavy doses of chanson and traditional pop woven into the mix. She still releases albums, but they're more orchestral. Here's one of her early songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vijQLUBWVQU

Hosono also produced Testpattern, who have a sort of proto-techno sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQAML1O65Rw

Finally, we have Apogee and Perigee: Chojiku Korodasutan Ryokoki. Apparently, this was supposed to be a soundtrack album to a musical that told the story of the titular robots, although the musical was never produced. It features Jun Togawa, Miharu Koshi, Testpattern, Hosono himself, and the most melodramatic hard rock song in the history of humanity.

This is incredible and I'll have to see if my local rental place has a copy. It's weird, for the most part I've listened to less Japanese music since actually moving to Japan than I did when I was in school. I'm diving back in now that I've gone from Tsutaya's slim pickings to a rental place that has separate sections for The Stalin and solo Michiro Endo.
