I wake from a horrible dream – no battleships sunk in the attack, the attack in the Philippines stagnating against strong American resistance. The whole war was going poorly.
Waking up in my own sweat was a good thing for once. Today is the day the Kido Butai hits Pearl harbour.
I make it to the operations station on Tokyo Bay Fortress. We listen as the radio reports come in.

One of our midget subs penetrates the defences at Pearl Harbour and manages to torpedo the West Virginia – There are reports of damage to her engines.

Another makes it through, and hits the Maryland.

As the Americans run around panicking as to the cause of these two massive explosions, we launch the entire wing of the Kido Butai. Now the Americans will have something to panic about.

Bombs fall on both the airfield and the ships. We are almost unopposed except for some hurried flak fire.

We lose 18 planes, but destroy 59, as well as sinking four destroyers – there are no reports of battleships sunk, but there is a lot of damage reported.

We also hit Wake, destroying some more planes and damaging the runway there.

The Imperial Navy bombards Midway.

We strike the enemy airbases here, we destroy more enemy airframes.

We then land troops at Batan. The Island is unoccupied, and we take it with minimal casualties – we lose 50 men to accidents while landing.

We find the two most powerful Royal Navy ships – our pilots focus on the Repulse, and it takes the majority of the hits. I would have preferred a more even spread, but this should guarantee the kill.

Strikes hit airbases in Malaya, Britain has to ship her planes a long way to get here, so I want to reduce them as much as possible.

We return for the Prince of Wales in the afternoon.

They go for one of our heavy cruisers, but our CAP see them off.

We return and finish off the Repulse.

Troops begin to land in Malaysia.

Fighting begins to the north.

Over a hundred enemy planes have been destroyed on the ground, but we are still waiting on the ship kills to come in.

Only the Repulse is confirmed here, but I am sure this will increase with time, its not like things are going to go terribly, like my dream....

I turn to my plans. First I visit industry.

Three carriers for 1945 are cancelled. I doubt I will need them, and they are to far off to see any real action. The Junyo is accelerated, another fleet carrier in the next few months will be useful.

Troops are ready to flood into the Philippines. I spend some time setting up troop moves – China, Malaysia and the Philippines will be my main targets.

We of course order the fleet to hit Pearl Harbor again.

Okay, maybe you're new around here, and haven't got a clue what's going on. Well, this is War in the Pacific, Admirals Edition. This is one of the most grognardy games around, and I'm going to fighting the entire war in the Pacific in real time.

Thats right, one turn a day, for the next four to five years.

No I'm not mad, if you've not been looking forward to this, then you might not know that I've done this before, just as the allies. – For fun, why don't you read that one day by day as well, and compare how the war goes.

This is not the first time I've tried the Japanese side – I got a few months in last time before my computer committed sepuka at the thought of another five years. This is a new computer, which does not yet know what its in for.

I'm going to terribly, I'm going to get mocked for every slight mistake, weird bugs are going to create heroes.

It's going to be glorious.

Okay – life point! My wife is currently pregnant, child due in April. Al going well, by the time this ends, I'll be having arguments with the little monster.

Troops flood ashore in Malaya.

We also provide air support for the troops landing.

We also hit future targets.

We take our landing zone, now to march south towards Singapore.

We hit Wake again, but their pilots are more awake today.

Pear Harbour is hit for a second day, we lose a lot more planes today, but we get a lot more hits in on targets.

We take heavy losses in an air raid on Iba.

Our light carrier group hits the southern isles.

We open up the ground war in China with a new offensive.

We take an unmanned island.

We have taken heavy air losses today, but we did more damage to the enemy battleships, so the Kido Butai will retire to replenish losses now. We are on schedule for the attacks, so all is looking good there.

The Prince of Wales is on the sunk list, but no points for her yet – there is a chance she will survive. I'm hoping the smaller battleship row seen today means we have actually sunk some of the US battleships.

On of our invasion convoys is buzzed by American destroyers.

We still land troops on the mainland however.

Another invasion ship is hit by a torpedo, thankfully it fails to go off.

A few hours later, another ship hears a “clunk” followed by a distinct but muffled “DAMMIT!” from beneath the waves.

Our cruisers find those two destroyers, who are surprised by our presence. The Pillsbury is hit hard and sunk.

The Pope flees, into the jaws of another task force that deals with her.

The bombers go inland to soften up the next target.

We land troops in the French holdings in China.

Here we take our first ship damage.

Our subs begin to choke off Hawaii.

Troops land at Wake.

The meagre American defence cannot hold us for even a day.

We continue to bomb around Malaya.

The Kongo was attacked, but she was not hit.

We get some Nates up in the afternoon to deal with the next wave.

Just as well it seems!

We hit Tarawa today. It is unoccupied and we take it with the loss of ten men injured during landing operations.

A good day, we take two bases with minimal losses, and sink two enemy destroyers!

Still no American battleships – an no points for the British ones yet!

Well, there's always tomorrow.

The Americans try and sneak four battleships out of Pearl Harbour. We torpedo one of them twice. We must NOW get a kill, surely!

No! Target one of the other ones!

The West Virginia is missing. Could it be one of those identifications was wrong and we torpedoed two separate ships?

The Batan force Island hops south.

We take more heavy losses here.

Appari is now ours, and wave two is hitting the beaches.

We continue this one-two with a landing at Legaspi.

We land troops to the north of Borneo.

Owch, that's a few less airframes.

Vildebeest's are one of two aircraft I fear at this time – the other being the Swordfish. There are not many of them, but they punch well above their weight.

They return in the afternoon to do some more damage.

Taking out a B-17 is actually quite a feat in these days.

American Carrier spotted!

We are losing a number of airframes.

Five American battleships appear on the kill list, but we only see a 162 point jump in the allied ship losses chart – but still, if this is true, then we have done a good job!

The Kido Butai is ordered to move to the Marshall islands to try and catch that American carrier. If we can sink one early, we can help ourselves massively.

We open the day by landing troops on Guam.

The American carrier swings north and takes out one of my precious invasion fleets.

Then another, I need to kill this thing.

We hit the other end of Sarawak. Gotta keep them reeling.

We also land troops in Kuantan – the main aim here is to keep the enemy pinned in place.

At Miri, a couple of minelayers try and see us off – it ends badly for them.

Georgetown gets several visits from our planes today.

Is that a British carrier? Or just a bug in the interface.

Looks like I'm now in range of planes from Singapore!

Over the course of the day, it goes poorly for me.

Miri is ours though.

I sally out a carrier, but our pilots just seem good at getting themselves shot down.

Our troops take heavy losses trying to expand the beachhead.

They have nothing in the south however.

Two more B-17's shot down? It must be Xmas!

We take the long named French base in China.

A lot of ship losses, but a good number of (minor) bases taken. The progress continues!

We land more troops – keep on invading!

We need to do something about the allied air superiority here.

We take another unmanned island.

The British have moved up some light cruisers.

We come back in the afternoon with torpedoes.

We strike the Alor Star airfield.

We strike at Kavieng.

Kuching falls to our troops, on to the next target!

Our men arrive at Hong Kong and try and overwhelm the defences. Ahh, I've missed automatic shock attacks.

So this is our first quiet day – lots of troops unloading, lots of raids without much action.

We hit the Dane again. Hopefully she will go down today.

Another torpedo should sort it.

We take out a few attacking planes here.

We need to stop these attacks – they are not doing anything.

A new landing at Davao should distract the Americans.

Our forces at Lingayen are attacked, they need support.

We shatter a Chinese force.

Here we are less effective, we may need for forces to shift this unit.

We continue to push at Hong Kong – their defences are crumbling, and this should not be a long battle.

We hit the Chinese hard today, but I need to funnel more troops into the Philippines – this is a mistake I made last time, and will not repeat it!

No points for this, but I think I can believe it.
I push a load of planes forward to their new bases, and order more men to move form Japan to the Philippines.

The enemy are fleeing Hong Kong – we intercept one of their convoys, but cannot do any damage. The Americans get an early hit.

Our men are not daunted, they come back at dawn and surprise the British ships – out opening salvo is a hit, and it goes downhill for the British from there.

On the land, we push forwards against another small force.

We clear some more railway. The Chinese take heavy losses getting in our way.

We have a day of rest at Hong Kong itself, but we still weaken the enemy.

Enemy ships are spotted, and we are forced to reroute convoys.

We strike at her, but 17 planes can only get one dud in.

The next wave gets a strike.

We return in the afternoon and hit a destroyer.

We lose more planes striking at Manilla harbour.

Our advancing troops destroy and American unit.

Its the same process on a smaller scale at Puerto Princesa.

A good day! We really hit their shipping today, I'm not sure how much we have sunk, but we've at least damaged a lot with a long way to go.

We lose our first ship to enemy submarine action.

We finish the Dragon and her escort.

Express delivery!

The American subs are active today.

We also have a sub in the area, but it makes a surface attack and takes a hit.

A cruiser and its escorts hunt down a cargo ship.

That's Palawan secured, time to island hop.

I sallied these cruisers out on day one to hunt ships fleeing Hong Kong. They get their kills today.

They then slam into another task force, but Commander Morishita ordered them to break off early – I can only assume they are conserving ammunition.

We continue to clear railway lines. I have troops in Manchuria I want to move forwards.

The Chinese are taking heavy losses today.

We push out of Canton and send the enemy threatening the city falling back in disarray.

The last fortifications at Hong Kong are reduced.

We bomb the enemy airfields in Malaya.

The planes I moved in yesterday take immediate effect.

We take Kaveng. Rabaul is now in sight....

Ooooh, This is a good kill – oilers are rare beasts.

Its a good day for the subs.

Argh! One of the dreaded Dutch Subs!

Well, this is interesting....

I need to move these onto more useful missions.

This was a brave raid.

We advance deeper into Malaya.

I hate these things.

We find a light freighter fleeing the area.

We hit the beaches on another island.

We attack at Lingyen again, and despite the fact the enemy are poorly lead and green, they hold – numbers do seem to count for something it seems!

We have some reinforcements incoming though.

We take Guam!

I reinforce the beachhead at Kuantan.

I get the men ashore, but pay for it.

A rare naval strike by Chinese planes. I ignore most air war over China, as not much happens.

This is a dangerous stretch of sea.

We absolutely annihilate the Chinese forces on the road to Changsha. We take thousands of prisoners and are now able to march forwards at will. The city will be well defended, but troops are starting to move up.

Units are being destroyed at Hong Kong, the end is nigh.

We take Pakoi without a fight. Six Walruses are destroyed. I am assured these are planes, not animals.

Oh thank god.

The Ryujo Actually does something!

Its always the Vildebeests.

That makes me feel a little better.

Because I may just have learned something from last time, more troops are landed at Lingyen. Amazing I know, it almost like I have a plan and am not winging it!

Another unmanned island falls.

Again, we are held in check by fortifications.

Our sub continues to hunt.

Dutch subs! They have working torpedoes don'tyaknow.

We get two hits on them, lets hope that forces them back into the docks for a while.

I'm not going to call this a stranglehold, but we are at least interdicting Pearl Harbour.

We are even hunting off Canada now.

The Allied pilots seem to be a lot better than I was lead to believe.

Especially these bastards. I told these ships to move out.

I really hate them.

Our men assault across the river, expecting a single enemy unit. They find a massive concentration of Chinese troops and take heavy losses.

We get a measure of revenge in the south.

We begin a heavy assault on Hong Kong. This strips half their Assault Value (AV) in one day.

I have a lot of troops moving into action in China, so that front should explode soon. I'm annoyed with our ship losses in Malaya, but the troops are ashore, and should be able to advance soon.

I'm not going to lie, this is bad. The air support I keep trying to arrange seems to want to stay at home, and we've paid for it.

The losses in shipping prove worthwhile as we take Kuantan.

With fresh men ashore, Lingayen falls quickly. While casualties are equal, we have done a lot more damage to the enemy than we took when you look at destroyed squads.
