Keep it up lads!

They turn and flee so quickly we can only shoot down one plane.

That's better!

There are still lots of random bombing runs in China, but you can see the effect, so I'm not going to report twenty raids of one plane being blown up.

Yawn. Liberators.

I think these guys just flew around each other for a bit.

Another city falls to overwhelming Soviet forces. Another unmanned base also falls.

The Russians hit hard, but their movement is slow. There is a limit to how much land they can take.

The raids here continue.

Somehow, they are still convincing people to get into planes.

The men are finally rested, and we kick off the fighting again.

We hold the Red Army again!

Well, in one place.

I have to say the number of Soviet air strikes has dropped in the last couple of days. Lets hope that continues.

But it's time for Operation Pearl Harder to leave....

Yeah, there is little I can do in China to stop the Russians, so it would be six months to a year of losing bases every few days.
It's fun now, but it would get old fast.

The Steel Rain continues.

The soviets are still bombing, there is just nothing interesting left to blow up....

The Communists take another base.

The Red air force makes the mistake of visiting Japan.

Ignore the random bit of China, this is actually over Rabaul.

We really did a number on them today!

From reading Castles of Steel I don't think any human player would put up for a single turn what happened in real life.

4 German BC's with attached CL's and DD's bombard a British harbour with 4 old DD's and a modern SS.

3 DD's run away. 1 launches 1 torpedo (that misses) and the sub grounds itself on a sandbar. The defending old small guns on land cause more damage and take none back because the range is so short the BC's shells aren't arming and are skipping off the ground into the town behind them.

The BC's see the single torpedo and run away.

400 civilians dead and wounded and nothing of military significance occurs.

It gets more farcical when the big fleet engagement you have planned (because you can read the enemy codes and know what's going on) fails completely because your signal officer sends a bad order to the wrong ship which passes that bad order to the next wrong ship and causes your BC fleet to miss by 10 miles the enemy fleet. Meanwhile a DD squadron mistakes an enemy DD for friendly because it stayed in their formation and kept a straight face while doing it. A friendly BB decides NOT to shoot an enemy CL for no apparent reason. One of your fleet admirals is trying to give orders to a DD squadron and dosn't know Fleet Command ordered the DD's to sit 100 miles away guarding a minefield.

Any human player would be tearing their hair out and refusing to play such a buggy game.

It would depend on how it was communicated.

X has missread orders.
Y is holding while awaiting clarification.
Z is ignoring your orders and is attacking for his own personal glory.

As long as it is clear this why your plan is in tatters, most people would be fine.

I'm mainly showing this as it's a dull day so far and this is a different target.

That's more like it!

The 3rd infantry regiment has a bad day.

The last forts at Kalgan are overwhelmed.

The Red Army takes another base, but it's not the lightning war we were expecting.
That's a lie, we know how ground combat works in this game, we were all expecting this.

We're closing in on more planes killed than lost. And this will help.

A dull day, but look at that – we are now only 11 points off having destroyed more planes than we have lost.

Operation Pearl Harder is still moving forwards. That's the battleships in tow for ablative armour a glorious charge into Pear Harbour itself!

The carriers come into range of the level bombers from Pearl.

The come in wave, after wave.

We gun them down in large numbers.

Though some get through to see our carriers, none land any hits.

We hold here with heavy losses.

Air losses are heavy, but could be worse – and there are no hits on our ships yet.

We have sent a note to the Allies detailing an armistice with us holding the territory we have under arms. We shall see how they respond to this.

You can get A7Ms. You just have to actually plan plane research, and it’s a convoluted and tedious mess. By late 1944 some players are fielding A7Ms, and by 1945 some of the more exotic stuff can come online, including rocket and jet models. The J7W shinden, Ki-83 heavy fighter, and other planes can be competitive with the best allied offerings in air combat and sweep roles. But they all suffer from high service ratings, which means they can’t be used at a high rate without days of downtime for maintenance, and Japan has a fixed number of squadrons available to use no matter how well you’ve been doing. So you might have a thousand trained pilots and airframes sitting around, but you can’t use them. In fact, and I’ve mentioned this before, the game forces withdrawal of squadrons that historically were empty irrespective of how the war goes.

Or it bugs out and drains your political points.

Another day hanging around Pearl, and still no sign of a single engine bomber.

Just more Invaders.

Oh, and some Mitchells.

We take another wave of plane losses across China.

I think my carriers may be bugged again – I am going in close tomorrow.

Two days of Operation off their main naval base and they have not hit a single carrier at loss. The Allies mull over my demands.

The Carriers are in close, and here come the single engine attack planes.

I have to say, I was expecting greater numbers.

Now we seem to be on to the less scary ones – maybe they are saving the 120+ wave for later....

but it just seems to be more of the previous – level bomber after level bomber.

My own attack is taken apart by the CAP – but this was never about victory, but making our presence known.

The afternoon strikes begin, and we see two more avengers.

Finally, after raid after raid, they land a bomb hit!

Then a second!

My afternoon wave meets the same fate as the morning one.

Then we get the prize – she may not be a warship, but hitting anything this close to their main base is a political win!

In a day of inconclusive dog fighting, this is all I need to claim victory.

We lose big in this wave.

Then they hit us several times more.

My losses are catastrophic, but that was never the point. People are outraged that after four years of war, the Japanese are still able to strike at Pearl Harbor.

With minimal damage.

Meanwhile, two more Allied ships and their crews are at the bottom of the ocean.

There are protests on the streets of most major American cities. In Britain there is also a weariness from six years of war.
It is announced a few minutes before midnight that the allies have signed an armistice with the Empire of Japan – the stalemate that is costing so many lives daily, and the apparently inability of Allied generals to win any form of victory, it is decided to give the Japanese their gains and settle for Peace.

The Soviet Union requires more convincing, but their own heavy losses against the Germans means that Stalin also sees the need for peace – without the lend-lease supplies from the Allies, the crippled Soviet forces will be forced to crawl across China while their Allies are at peace.

Japan claims its war gains, and there is little the Allies can do except demand inspections of the areas, more to save face than anything else.

Reports of the Allied incompetence begin to come in.

Pearl Harbor contains one battleship and one carrier.

It's airfields filled with heavy bombers and other planes with pilots past their service dates. There is one squadron on Avengers on the base.

So where are the rest of the allied ships?

The bulk of their fleet is safely holed up in San Francisco – with no intention of ever coming out to fight.

The vast majority of the air force is also stationed at bases here. No wonder we saw no real threats at Pearl Harbor – the Americans have been stockpiling their more deadly planes here.

The post war inquests lead to huge numbers of Generals being dishonourably discharged and sentenced to long prison terms. General MacArthur takes his own life in a cell.

Japan goes into a boom post war, as it has unrestricted access to oil and raw materials from the Greater Co-Prostperity Sphere, and the world as we know it changes.....

Thank you for sticking with me on this one – I love to read you comments, and I'm just sorry the AI was so broken to not give much of a threat. I hope you've enjoyed it!

Thanks for all your words guys - It can get pretty quiet in threads like this, and It's always nice to know people have been reading, even if they have not been commenting (I know there is not often much to say, so this is not a criticism)

I like checking in on LPs on my phone when I'm taking a little break at work, so I really prefer screenshot to video.

I'm trying a mix - videos are quicker, and work better for some games, but you can do different things with SS, so I'll always try and keep a couple of those running.

I don't mind firing up DW again, if people want to see that.

The engine would be the fight, CM has no civilians in it, so that would limit the mission scope somewhat - but I think it could still work. with some GM trickery.
