Paternal grandfather was also a chief engineer on the Fletcher class destroyer USS Franks.

He was at the Battle off Samar in the sister task force to Taffy 3 (Taffy 2) doing the same job of escorting carriers. When the Japanese fleet appeared his ship also made a torpedo run but got called away to protect the carriers before attacking. Grandpa thought they were targeting the Yamato but some research says it was probably the Kongo.

The ships that got sunk in Taffy 3 were in my Grandpa’s same destroyer squadron. He never really talked about any details if he knew anyone on those ships but I’d assume he did as they did a number of missions together earlier in the war.

After the battle he somehow ended up becoming the prison warden for the Port Chicago Mutineers while they awaited trial...

Maternal grandfather was a Corsair pilot but crashed his plane a couple months before deploying and spent the rest of the war in the hospital. He would have been stationed on the Midway.

1571 guns, although worryingly there seems to be no effect on the enemy AV during those bombardment attacks.

EDIT: So my new strategy is now to keep attacking and have them attack me in return which crushes their AV as the terrain isn't good for any attacks. My raw AV advantage is now 10:1 even though I lost 2000 AV.

If its in China be sure to switch to the advanced view in the unit details screen and look at individual unit's supply levels. If the big AV formations are red don't attack that turn and wait a few days for supply to get high enough. Units take a huge AV penalty if they are even 1 supply short. The infrastructure in China is bad enough you may have to wait half a week in between attacks but with supply your units will be doing way more damage and taking lower casualties overall.

They nerfed the bombardment action from previous WITP versions. Its basically useless if you aren't attacking at the same time. Just a waste of supplies.

So I finally got to reduce enemy forts at Hankow so the end should be near I do have another question though. What the hell do I do with all the base forces on the West Coast and Pearl? All I've done with them so far is send 4-5 of them to Noumea.

They will get used to maintain the tons of bases you'll be acquiring as you capture all of the Pacific, 1-2 base forces per tiny island base, more for larger bases. Use airbase forces if you want to include more planes at a base, use naval base forces to get more supplies unloaded from ships per turn at the base.

You will also get about a million base construction forces and beyond using a few here and there I haven't found a good use for them. Building up bases is just too easy to need the historically accurate numbers you get.
