Accelerationism is dumb and bad. Once we get to the horrible consequences accelerationism brings, things do not magically circle back to 'great' like a Flintstones backdrop or a trampoline; it just makes things harder to get back to 'not-horrible'. At best, you have the social-political-economic order from before completely decimated to start from scratch, possibly after real human cleansing and environmental destruction on a scale of a World War and the Holocaust. I don't think we - or the planet - can handle that sort of thing again with the technology we have now and the environmental stressors at stake. The only real way forward is to dig in the mud and muck and pull on the Tug-of-War with what ground we have now as hard as we can. You can't give an inch. Willie Tomg posted:Accelerationism does not assume this. Er, yes it does. Many accelerationists are accelerationists because they figure people will only snap to reality when they are up to their shoulders in water due to climate change and/or think change is only possible if the old order is completely done away in the style of the French Revolution/Russian Revolution/WWI/WWII.

Willie Tomg posted:And many republicans are republicans because they figure the world was made in six days by a presence who sent His only son to tell us how to live, then get killed so hard he bounced back. That doesn't mean contemporary movement conservatism and weirdo ideological zen-death adopting marxist language can't be isolated and talked about in its formal aspects. My point about accelerationists and their logic still stands.

He's pulling an Enhydra lutris-esque (ie the otter guy who got banned for posting goatse in the I/P thread a while ago) gimmick by capitalizing every other noun or adjective for emphasis and writing in the style of overly formal 1800s gentry. In other words, yes, he's trolling. Teriyaki Koinku fucked around with this message at 17:23 on Jan 25, 2016 |

WorldsStrongestNerd posted:Concerning Trump and the tea party types, it's been pointed out but those voters don't matter in and of themselves. They matter because the gop machine recruited them. If Trump loses the general, his supporters won't do any soul searching, they aren't capable anyway, but the gop machine will. But see, the GOP elite already purportedly did this soul searching in Spring 2013 in the wake of the 2012 elections (where Karl Rove famously had his "polls are skewed" reality denying meltdown live on Fox News). They came up with a list of suggestions that even included things like 'alter messaging so we don't seem as racist towards Hispanics and other minorities.' This introspection lasted for all of a few weeks, the Republican party did diddly squat to act on this brief reconsideration of tactics, and so went right back to doubling down harder on the angry old white guy demographic, falling in line with guys like Trump today.

Here's (another reason) why accelerationism is dumb: Egypt and Iran. In the former, revolution turned from Hosni Munarak to Muhammad Morsi to Al-Sisi today; in the latter, it turned from the Shah to Ayatollah Khomeini (provided the US shut out the possibility of a secularist like Mossadegh). Turning the former regime to ash and replacing it with something new does not automatically guarantee something better in its stead and may in fact end up with something that much harder to move away from. The political barometer does not suddenly reset to zero like resetting the mileage counter on a car; it can just shift to a position that's even harder to work to a better state from, if even at all. You have to start from where you are now and do the hard, grinding toil of making it better every step of the way and clawing every scrap of progress and not give up your ground instead of resigning yourself to waiting for complete overthrow to start from the ruins of the old order.
