24 hours till I see Ep 7. I looked at the session booking page online and there are only about a dozen seats left right down the front to both sides of the screen.

The cinema emailed me this afternoon, they're letting people take their seats at 11pm as 5 screens are doing the midnight showing and 4 more screens have a 12:30am session. Huge crowd turnout leading upto it no doubt.

^^ Oh I booked tickets a month ago, I got 5 seats middle of the cinema 3 rows from the back, I was just interested to see what seats were left for the two 'Xtremescreen' midnight sessions, almost all midnight screenings are sold out at this particular cinema (large, centre of city cinema)

Yes it sucks those seats are the same price. I remember seeing a harry potter film second row from front, left of screen, had a sore neck and vowed never to sit near the screen again.

I doubt we'll be getting it alongside TFA; prints are already out in the wild, and if the trailer is just now being shown around Lucasfilm, it's probably not attached to the film proper. Still, 'soon' seems to be the right word here.

I would not be surprised if it was added to TFA in two or three weeks and not put online for a little while, draw fans back to the cinema to see TFA again.

Edit: VVV Imax here was recently upgraded with laser projectors (and a new screen material and new audio system), so only in 3d at imax here, maybe 2d at the two Liemax screens in the suburbs. So I mgiht go and see it a second time there after new years just to check out how laser looks in 3d, hopefully a lot brighter.

First ~third(?) of the film was amazing. The rest had some pacing issues and a couple of 'holywood superhero/action movie' moments which were a bit dumb.

Interested to see the next part but i'd probably personally rank them as:

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Force Awakens
Revenge of the Sith
The Phantom Menace
The Clones Wars

It might grow on me, will probably rewatch it in cinemas but it isn't something i'd see again right away, might even wait for it to hit other media before a rewatch, not sure.

Edit: BB-8 is the best.

To expand on that. The pacing was off, I think things didn't flow too well once they got away from Jakku and met up with Han and Chewie. It felt more Guardians of the Galaxy that next scene, for lack of a better comparison. The first third or so of the movie was great though, perfect mood and setting, very Star Wars, thematically.

Score was okay? I can't say I noticed it much, the movie lacked some definite themes, something you could hum on the way out of the cinema. I'm sure once I listen to the OST without sound effects over the top I'll notice some themes, but don't expect a standout theme like an Imperial March or Duel of the Fates from The Force Awakens.

Starkiller Base blew up some random system, General Hux was angry at the senate and Resistance about something and decided to fire off his toy. What blew up? Some brand new system? It wasn't Corusant was it, it was anti-climactic, just a bit of a visual feast for the eyes and no real substance for the movie. Why didn't they shoot it off six months earlier? I didn't really have a feeling that the First Order needed to use the weapon other than just to be bad guys.

Also where the gently caress were the loving Y-Wings? Oh sure, we need to bomb this thing to make the Deathstar explode, lets just send a dozen xwings and call it a day. Did they completely remove Y-Wings and Tie-Bombers from the movie? Tie-Bombers could have been used on the attack on the Jakku camp when hunting Finn and Rey. Damnit J.J.

I think the thing that surprised me most was Captain Phasma or rather, the lack of Captain Phasma. No doubt she'll show up in Ep 8, but I really thought that she'd be the main baddie the good guys would go up against in this film apart from the obligatory end of movie showdown with Kylo Ren. Instead Phasma had like 4 lines and about 2 minutes seconds of screentime, mostly in the background.

Edit: To put it in Georges words... "It's like poetry, it rhymes."

For those who have seen it, does the movie do a good job 'handing off' the Star Wars story to the new cast similar to what Trek '09 did?
Not really spoilers but hidden anyway: The handoff isn't complete, I think the next movie will be when the newbies really take the lead

Nope. Just Lucasfilm. As it isn't a kids movie (like Marvel stuff, no disney logo before violent superhero movies)

For my screening it went captain america civil war trailer -> curtains move and screen widens -> Lucasfilm logo - > "a long time ago..." -> smashcut to titlecard and usual star wars intro.

Just when you thought Darth Vader couldn't get any more evil, it's been claimed that a "more violent" version of the villain will feature in Rogue One.

According to Making Star Wars, the Sith Lord will take no prisoners during his appearances in the battlefield scenes of the upcoming movie.

We'll apparently see "decapitated rebels, people being dismembered by Vader throwing his sword [and] levitating bodies to make human shields" in the battle sequences.

Several suits of armour have been built for Vader in the film, including a stunt version.

From the rebels thread, light season 2 spoilers in the Kallus video:

drunkill posted:

So, the first lines of the trailer, presumably by some Imperial person who is detaining/interviewing Jyn Erso (lead actress) sounds an awful lot like Agent Kallus... Cameo anyone? It'd be really cool if that were the case, although the voice actor for Kallus is black so it'd have to be lipsynching, or someone else impersonating, hence it being the not quite the same voice.

Kallus:

Could just be a coincidence. Agent Kallus is an Imperial Security Bureau officer, so it'd make sense for an interrogation.

Isometric Bacon posted:

Oh man. Not one X-wing in a teaser for a movie called Rogue One?

I think I'm alone in that my favorite part of star wars films has and has always been the space battles. I've been disappointed that nothing has ever lived up to that amazing Death Star sequence, with it's tight plotting, clear suspense and sense of dread as each pilot bites it one by one. Each X-wing feels like it has physics: a weight and a presence, and someone belongs in there.

Every movie space battle since feels like a videogame, complete with floaty physics, lots of barrel rolls and a desire to fit as many things as humanly possible into each and every frame. Any scenes of pilot chatter seems detached from the action.

Fingers crossed for some space battles in Rogue One.

Just to point out, it was really well crafted because it was a remake of the Dambusters bombing run scene, down to the dialog. A reminder that Star Wars is WW2 naval and aircombat but in space. Capital ships are the navy ships, destroyers and battleships while the squadrons are aeroplanes which have three dimensional movement.

Description of the new (actual) trailer:
http://collider.com/rogue-one-new-trailer-description/

he trailer opens up with a few shots of what looks to be a young Jyn Erso running as an Imperial ship soars above before cutting to Felicity Jones as voice over plays; “There isn’t much time. Every day, we grow weaker. While the day grows grimmer, we still have a chance … to make a real difference.” The music begins to ramp up as we catch glimpses of handcuffed rebels being walked through the streets and shots from the first trailer and from the Star Wars Celebration reel including Stormtroopers walking through Scarif, the Shoretroopers, a shot of Orson Krennic flanked by Death Troopers walking across a terrain that looks a lot like the grassy area we see the young Jyn running through at the beginning of the piece.

The trailer wraps with the reveal we’ve all been waiting for – kind of. In comes the sound of Darth Vader’s breathing and then we get a shot that slowly pans up to show, not Vader himself, but rather his reflection on the floor. That’s all we get, but it’s chilling and satisfying enough and clearly leaves so much more to be discovered about his involvement in the plot of the film.

Overall, this is another fantastic piece of promotional material. Regardless of rumors circulating regarding the tone, just like the first Rogue One trailer, this one definitely has an intense war movie feel to it. It’s packed with Stormtroopers, explosions and other visuals that tease a very visceral intensity, sky high stakes, and a scenario where no one feels safe.

So I've seen some speculation among fans that the Death Star is used to destroy Jedha, that desert planet with the walled city, and that's what we see set up with the whole eclipse shot and the shot of the ship escaping from the planet under what looks like a rain of boulders. But isn't it made clear in ANH that the Death Star had not yet been deployed before it was used to destroy Alderaan? It seems like it would be really stretching things to show the Death Star used against a planet before ANH.

I thought, before reading that, that it could be Jakku. The Empire shoots this Jedha planet for whatever reason, this wipes out the capital city and most of the population and it becomes a backwater, is renamed Jakku (or it was always named that and the city was Jedha) and now you've got an explanation for the huge scar Jakku has in TFA.

I think those turrets are on the orbital station/dockyard, which the Star Destroyer is docked at in the last gif. The TIE fighters are launching from the orbital platform too. I think it is a space elevator since there is a 'tray' of the cargo containers that the AT-ACTs carry in the middle of that forcefield-like thing.

So there is at least one SD there, hopefully a few others nearby.
