I wasn't invested in the build up but liked the ending, she'd do anything to save her people but was totally blind to the bigger picture. The deal was pretty WTF though, why didn't she pull something like that forever ago with some easily pliable human for magic beans or whatever.

She had absolutely no idea that other species / humans were capable of enslaving her people?

As I said, I don't REALLY expect Magicians or Buffy to start going all John Wick on things. I get that that's not the shows they are.

In the books there is a John Wick scene. The nice part is that it isn't a OP or permanent thing. The characters still gently caress themselves over.

Yes, because they wanted people to know that scientists used her cells without her consent.

Informed Consent didn't exist until 5 or 6 years later and it was based off of a malpractice suit. I'm not saying what happened to Lacks wasn't unethical, especially by today's standards.

Lacks' story is just this story that has all the wrong and toxic things going for it - especially with her children. I don't even want to touch this because it's lose-lose.

But I believe they did give permission to the book written about her, the documentary based on the book, and the HBO movie starring Oprah about her.

That's a drama of its own: http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/tv/z-on-tv-blog/bal-henrietta-lacks-son-includes-oprah-hbo-complaints-20170320-story.html

It did work, she mentions living with them and going through that for six months before they got tired of her and told her the truth.

They tell her the secret to their weaponry is found in black grains of sand that are mixed i with their regular sand at like 10000/1 and every child must gather a bag full to forge into their first weapon. She spends the six months sifting sand for the black grains. After going through all of that and bringing the bag to the man she’d been sleeping with he laughs at her dumps out the bag to reveal she was just fooling herself into seeing the sand as black and that they would never teach their secrets to a “filthy earth whore”.

What book was this in, I don't really remember this detail?

All the stuff with Fogg was hilarious and also pitiable. I like that they've had an undercurrent of self-immolation going on with him from the very first season, because he's a great character. I love that he oozes contempt for the kids and yet loves them dearly.

And a lot of jealousy too since he can't partake in their adventures and he has more responsible role for magic at Brakebills than robbing banks with HKM.

I would take a few episodes of Casino meets Ocean's Eleven Magicians in a way.

Do you recall the episode from last season where they track down Reynard, and he's delivering pizza? It's established then that even without the kernel of power that let him perform godly magic, he's still as ageless and immortal as he ever was. Julia burned out that kernel of power making a new set of keys to magic, but like Reynard was she's evidently still divinely unkillable, with caveats.

It might be a rehash, but I could see Julia building back up to godhood by helping people, but it might be masked by everyone getting magic back.

Or if OLU is coming back this season (which if the mythology lines up, she might be) she may reward Julia again - if only because at least one character needs a good happy arc and I think Julia is up for it.

Can someone remind why she isn’t a goddess anymore? I feel like I would have to rewatch the last half of last season o understand what everyone’s motivation and current magic stance is.

Julia is still a goddess. Just without magic currently.

Flatscan posted:

She burned up her goddess power remaking the golden keys after Alice destroyed the original set.

But still has power according to EP4. Power =/= Magic apparently but she'll probably return to form in some way.

The rest of magic has been rationed by the library. Everyone can do a little.

For example, In EP3, Quentin wins the card game by removing all the magic from the room and just pulling a sleight of hand trick to win.

Dean Fogg has been negotiating with the library for more magic to teach and who he can teach, etc. (Julia in EP 1 & 2)

Why is Margo being nice to Josh like at all?

Because Margo isn't a bad person at all. She's a complete badass and is the type of person (to quote from another thread I read) "takes maximal responsibility" of her charges in Fillory as well as her friends. Especially seasons 2-3, Margo pushes everyone to be their best. She doesn't like petty bs or self pity.

Margo has always been this person, but it's been hidden through the veneer of being overshadowed by males and maybe even a bit by Eliot. It really meant the world to Margo that Eliot named her High King and Margo continues to rise to the challenge.

Margo was also just overthrown so there's a beautiful balance to it.

I think if Eliot wasn't in danger Margo would have won that battle despite the odds.

But was she really overthrown once she knew the plot and used it to do what she wanted (Save Eliot) vs what her responsibilities were as High King? Margo saw her chance and owned it as Margo does instead of letting herself become the victim.

I really expected there to be some kind of last minute swerve to say, oh here's how he'll be back.

There's a theory on reddit that if Quentin returns, it will tie into Quentin's previous journey to the underworld in Season 2.
