Shows tend to avoid writing pregnancies into the plot because it can totally backfire on them like poor Katey Sagal on Married with Children (where she got pregnant, they wrote it into the plot and then she had a miscarriage.)

Not exactly a huge surprise seeing as previous years it would be renewed super early. So no news half way through the season was definitely a sign.

You would have hoped that after the whole thing with Josh two years ago (or however long it was in show time) that they would have learned their lesson in disregarding the feelings of other members of their group. Also next week is the musical episode.

I'm assuming they cleaned it up a little in post but Olivia Taylor Dudley must have been practicing quite a bit between series as she never did much singing in previous episodes.

While they definitely had an inkling that this was going to be the final season I have to imagine things would have gone a little differently if they actually knew beforehand.
