Everyone's Playing!

Red posted:

I went out of my way a year or so ago to get an old Junkpile (but not the whole 2099 set), because he's a character I like, and it's a great sculpt. I rarely play him, and when I do, he's slow and useless - but I love the guy:

Probably not worth the $7 or $8 I paid at the time, but so what? :)

Man, I really wished that guy was better. I tried to pair him with Doom 2099 a lot as MM fodder, but that fig isn't good, either. I eventually put a spare Doom 2099 sculpt on the meatsack Doom dial and enjoyed it much better.

Pff. I love battle royales and having multiple players on a map, but it definitely works better with an even number of players, and it does start taking a while for your turn to come around - helps to institute a time limit to keep things moving, and since you have so many players to go through, you should still have plenty of time to think about your moves.

Multiple player games are fun because you are all playing the same game, and politicking becomes an aspect - trying to convince one opponent that another opponent is the biggest threat so they make a better target than you, etc.

Everyone's Playing!

Huh.

The mystery of not knowing an opponent's dial, or not knowing what you might lose if you push, seems like a big part of the game. But it also makes for agonizing decisions that indecisive jerks like me take too long to make.

I'm trying to decide if knowing everybody's dial all the time would make things better or not. To be fair, much of my fun is in playing the characters and teams I want to play, as they say. So maybe it won't matter that much.

But it does take away some ability to surprise an opponent.

Also trying to decide how I feel about the whole 'specialist' thing. Yeah, I see the appeal of being able to cram more dudes and fuller theme teams onto your force, but I don't know if more characters is compelling if all the dials are one-note boring dials. Then again, the generalist dial may not be as interesting if it's visible and no longer has the ability to surprise someone with its versatility. But maybe I'm overestimating the need to have your opponent not know things.

I mean, the Con Artist would be considered a specialist. The Con Artist was the worst. A shitload of cheap perplex and outwit might make things suck more.

I see the point of people saying that you never need to buy new figures again. Just have one fig with a dial that has the numbers 1-12 on it. Then any card can be used for them.

Everyone is saying Print and Play is dead. Did I miss that?

Steve Vader

I thought maybe they could turn the dial 90 degrees to fill up that dead space on the back, and perhaps make it easier to read.

"Targeting the square" is only a thing with Telekinesis, I think.

I think your judge is right. Although it shouldn't be, because it's still a close combat attack and those don't require line of fire.

The real prize is the Jean Grey out of the FF. 50 points, Willpower, full-dial TK, and the first three clicks have a special TK she can use for free if she has no action tokens. She can TK up a KC Shazam, he can HSS somewhere, get back to where he was, then she can TK him back to where he started. Or, you know, less abusive uses of power, I guess.

Cheap Jean Grey TK yo-yo of a HSS beatstick. And the game comes full circle.

So I'm going to Origins for the first time in many years.

Anything cool happening clix-wise that would require me to bring some teams?

EDIT: Never mind, found a list of Side Events (because there's no point for me to attempt the big tourneys - I'm not that good and I hate meta play).

There are Golden Age tournaments that state "You may not include any non-character game elements except standard objects on your force and all starting force game elements you use (not including Sideline) must be able to begin the game on the map."

Does this effectively prohibit everything except actual figures and standard objects? No feats, no resources, no BFCs, no Entities? I feel like many of us have been searching for a succinct way to create tournaments that prohibit doucheplay but there's always some loophole to exploit. Does this mean that characters who generate bystanders can't generate them because they don't begin the game on the map?

Also, this will give me something to actually build teams for since my venues just keep doing sealed events forever.

Do keywords count as game elements for the side events? Or can I build 5 different Avengers teams for the Lil Clix event?

I saw you today, Morand, but it was in the midst of the tourney so I didn't bother interrupting. Congrats!

I instead played in the Golden Age Escalation thing, and wouldn't you know it turned out to be the ONE side event that didn't have the stipulation about no non-character game elements, which was most of the draw for me. So I'm playing against resources and poo poo. Went 0-1-1.

I'll be doing a BR tomorrow sometime.

L'il 'Clix had two people accidentally end up with illegal teams, one of whom was a 7-year-old kid who'd been doing well and having fun in all my events. We discussed it with his father, who was also playing, and decided that we'd have to quietly knock the kid down to last place, but when reading out the standings, we'd swap the kid and his father, so the kid would get to feel good about winning an LE. This was the event where you bring 5 100-point teams, and play as many games as possible against your opponent during the time limit, getting 1 point per win, so fast games were required. Well, the top table in round two began with a fight between White Lantern Martian Manhunter and Red Son Superman, who just kept hitting their Stop clicks and bouncing back for about half an hour... tough for them, but amusing to watch.

Escalation was a lot of fun... this being the only event that allowed resources (sorry, Steve Vader!), we saw some cheesier stuff. The Uru Absorbing Man with full Infinity Gauntlet build was just rude, but it got bogged down by an endless exploding rat-and-ant swarm. Fun one to watch.

That's okay - it'll teach me to read each event more closely rather than assume the same stips for the first three I read will be in place for all of them. I had built for the Li'l Clix event, too, but my team wasn't Modern Age, so that's another thing I missed (I had 5 100 point teams of Sinister Syndicate stuff!)

I was the guy who played all-Marauders in the Escalation. In retrospect (although, honestly, it was kinda in pre-spect, too), Arclight and Harpoon don't make a great 100 point team, even if their points work exactly and I was just trying to simplify. I really just need to play a full Marauders squad complete with Morand's Sinister at some point, so I can add Juggernaut and Brotherhooders to it if I want.

Thanks for running these events! I love the softer side of the game. It's where I live. And I'm glad to see an effort made to celebrate that side of it, too, even if people still try to rough it up anyway.

I managed to get it together enough to play him yesterday, but it's very fragile. Pick him up by the base and not his immense sculpt.

So I went 2-0-1 today and somehow lost to a guy who went 2-1 - a guy I also beat. I likely wouldn't play Night Nurse anyway, but they kept saying they input the stats into whatever program they report to, and it said he beat me, because he beat me on points. I always thought it was record first, and then points as tiebreaker. This was confusing and probably wrong, but I decided not to be a dick about it. Although it reminded me why I hadn't bothered to go there since sometime last year.

vvv We did roll off. I won the roll off. The lady said she had to enter a tie into whatever system she was using to "report accurately" so the roll off was disallowed. And for some reason, whatever system she was using was apparently telling her the other guy won. I didn't understand, and she was sheepish about it.

I played for the first time in many months. 600 points, one fig had to be 250.

I decided to make a ridiculous Soldier team based around Black Lantern John Stewart bringing back people and machines from the dead. I ran the War Wheel at 275 with him, as well as Jonah Hex (a Confederate soldier he was going to force to make amends) and Frankenstein (he's a bag of dead parts anyway).

First game, I lost to AoA Magneto and Phoenix Prime, but the second game I rolled against Darkseid and Validus, and I had a lovely time because Jonah Hex basically shot Darkseid twice, one in each eye, to end the Omega Beam threat. War Wheel backup helped, of course, but I like calling shots for Jonah Hex because there's always something fun about the games whenever I play him where I get to do a little trash talk about how badass he is.
