Okay I got a couple: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FISHEO3gsM This might be stretching it because it's in the same ballpark; it's just I would of never expected Johnny Cash to cover NIN. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc Also just going to assume parody songs are not what this thread is about?

Official ruling: Parodies by themselves don't count. I love Weird Al, but this isn't the thread for him. Someone making a "parodic" cover of a song in a different style does count, like the Rebecca Black Dylan cover you posted, or the Stairway to Heaven by 1960s Beatles cover I posted. Johnny Cash' version of Hurt definitely counts. Same song, different style, changes how you hear the song in a big way. Not a hard & fast rule though. Like some of the stuff I've posted isn't really that thought provoking, and a bunch of it is hella parodic. Make your own judgment I guess.

For getting as far away from the original as possible in terms of melody, harmony, lyrics, production and intent, whilst kind of being the same song, let me present Will Oldham's "version" of AC/DC's Big Balls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uzFMAg9E2Q Balls they come up happy When I place them in your hand And I will acknowledge with a cocking of my head When the faces rise against us 'cause we're moderate or meek They'll see we've got the only balls of them all I've got big balls O I've got big balls I've got big balls And they're dirty big balls And he's got big balls And she's got big balls But they're not the only balls of them all We could be eating pudding But we'd rather place our balls In their mouths when they are eating And let 'em be themselves Well the world is bound to splinter, Still in Paris they will cry "we've got the only balls of them all" O balls will make you happy O balls all the time Press your balls against the mirror Now you're pressing them to mine! Well my balls are always bouncing To the left and to the right They've found themselves a color And they peer into the night Once you've mouthed my testicles You'll know I'm not a liar I've got great balls of fire

A few more. Apoptygma Berzerk's EBM cover of Metallica's Fade to Black, almost unrecognizable if not for the lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbUKItIhFns Punch Brothers with a bluegrass cover of The Strokes' Reptilia (another AV Club one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy-bVutHC-s Afrika Bambaataa's electronic cover of Gary Numan's Metal (featuring Numan himself on vocals): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uVZNPwdbf0 Speaking of Gary Numan, he actually did a whole album of this kind of thing himself once. The entire 'Hybrid' album is his own new covers of his old stuff. He completely reworked his late 70s/early 80s new wave songs into modern darkwave, and either remixed or made completely new versions of his 90s albums songs with different producers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9j77Ywm1tE sticklefifer has a new favorite as of 23:01 on Mar 10, 2016 |

Beeswax posted:Hungarian folk song... Nude posted:I would of never expected Johnny Cash to cover NIN. I learned about an album by this Tuvan throat singing band in a GBS thread a while ago, good stuff. It has some really great covers by bands such as Iron Butterfly, The Rolling Stones, and even Joy Division... I really need to check out more of their stuff honestly. Also there's this band called What Cheer? Brigade: they're a marching band that did an awesome cover of Lightning Bolt's "13 Monsters". That was the only cover I knew about, but as I'm looking the album up on Discogs right now I'm learning that they also covered a variety of things, such as old Indian pop songs. ...Which reminds me! - I'm not really sure how well this would fit in the thread - but I learned about this song in a World Music class. I only recognize a Woody the Woodpecker laugh at 2:02, but maybe other parts of the song are borrowed from popular things? Oh, and apparently Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts covered a Tom Waits song.

I'm down for some good cover tracks, The Deadly Gentlemen - Touch of Grey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZnua67b6pg The original song is pretty good, the bluegrassy vibe does it good too. Primus- Have a Cigar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqwvNmG651Q An okay take on a Pink Floyd classic. Primus - Devil went down to georgia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9uk9IcoQ0w It's not the most obscure cover song, shows up in most any Youtube Video threads and I even think it's been on the old television at one point, but it's allright.
